Hi,

This one is is re-directing all my google web searches to scam/spam websites, popups, forms.

Also, possibly another virus or part of this package, it disabled my system restore, which WAS on, now all my restore points are gone!

Furthermore, i cannot turn ON any of my firewalls.

I had McAfee installed and running, used windows defender, spybot, mcafee... they all say the system is fine... but it's not.

Tried to edit this into the same post, i managed to get a DDS file, hope it helps.

Hi,

Download GMER (http://www.gmer.net) here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
Double-click .exe that you downloaded
Click rootkit-tab, uncheck files option and then click scan.
Don't check
Show All
box while scanning in progress!
When scanning is ready, click Copy.
This copies log to clipboard
Post log (if the log is long, archive it into a zip file and attach instead of posting) in your reply. Post also contents of fresh dds logs.

Hi Blade,

Thanks for helping me!
The GMER finished scanning and said it found no system modifications.
I clicked Copy, but there was nothing to copy.

I suppose that's good news? Unless this virus is hiding?
I double checked that i was following your instructions.
And I also made sure Tea Timer and Mcafee were both off during this and the DDS scan.

Attached is the zipped DDS.
I ran a spybot scan a couple days ago just to see what it would find... there were a few bugs. But i didn't fix anything, as i didn't want to interfere with the DDS and the help here.

Awaiting further orders captain.
Dan

Hi,

Post attach.txt part of DDS too.

Download aswMBR (http://public.avast.com/~gmerek/aswMBR.exe) to your desktop. Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
Click the Scan button to start scan.

On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.

Hi Blade,

Ran the MBR scan, and did another DDS for ya. Mcafee & tea timer both off.

I've attached both for ya. Good luck man, makes me dizzy looking at them!

Thanks Blade,
Dan

Hi

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Hiya Blade,

Here's the requested logs. I haven't tried to turn on my firewalls or do any google searches yet, waiting to see what the next step is. Combofix said it may take 10 minutes, or more if the system is in bad shape. For me it took at least 30 minutes. The whole system is feeling a bit sluggish from startup to even opening firefox. Not horrible, but not as snappy as it used to be before the virus.

Thanks for checking back so fast by the way.

OH no! i actually just did a YAHOO search, and now the virus in on the yahoo search engine! It wasn't there before, only on google.... it's getting worse?

now what?

Hi,

Does redirecting happen with both Firefox and Internet Explorer?

danimal67
2011-06-10, 11:46
Yeah Blade,

Both IE and Firefox have the redirects. When using google, yahoo, or bing search. The only time i am not getting a redirect is when i use the mcafee secure search in the lower status bar, and it opens a yahoo search... for some reason those links seem to work ok.

Also, my mcafee alarm popped up for the firewall, so i tried to enable it. Same thing, it goes on for a second, then back off.

And still when i try to reset the windows firewall settings i get the error: Windows firewall can't change some of your settings.
Error code 0x8007042c

Frustrating isn't it?

Hi,

1. Download TDSSKiller (http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.zip) and extract its contents into a folder in desired location (i.e. c:\tdsskiller).
2. Execute the file TDSSKiller.exe.
3. Click Start Scan. If threats are found, select cure and click Continue (tool may prompt for a reboot).
4. Post back contents of log file in c: drive root (name should be in UtilityName.Version_Date_Time_log.txt format)

danimal67
2011-06-10, 21:49
Hi there Blade,

Disabled windows defender, mcafee and tea timer and ran the TDSSkiller. It said it found no infections. Is that pretty standard for this virus to be able to hide from everything like this?

Log is attached.

Oh, by the way, I'm getting and update announcement for the Windows 7 Security Pack 1 install. I haven't done it yet cuz i'm not sure if the virus will corrupt the update and make it worse. Should I wait? Or should I update the system?

Thanks Mr. Blade,
Dan

Hi,

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

Hiya Blade,

When the scan completed u can see it says it found 0 threats of anything anywhere on the system.

However, when i do the google searches in firefox or IE, on google or BIng, it no longer does the redirect, but i think this is due to the malware bytes program catching it, as a new message always pops up saying it blocked a potentially harmful website and lists the ip.

So there is a virus still there, but this trial software is stopping it, but cannot seem to detect or remove it. Kinda weird.

And the firewalls are still unable to turn on.

Whatchya think?

Oh, also, should i wait on installing the service pack update?

Have a good weekend Mr. Blade!
Dan

Hi,

Is this system connected to a router? If so are there any other systems connected to the same device too?

danimal67

Hi BlaDE,

Yes it is connected to a router. Also connected to the router is an xbox 360 and a PowerMac G5 computer. I dont usually have either of them on though when using this laptop, or when running the anti-virus programs.

Hi,

What brand and model is it? Do you know how to restore its settings to factory defaults?

danimal67
2011-06-13, 17:20
hi Blade,

It's a Dell Inspiron N5030.

I did make a system recovery disc, but i'm wondering now if this virus is embedded somehow in the system and will still be there even if i do a system restore?

The Malwarebytes program pops up a window saying it is blocking ip address 193.105.135.219. Always going out of different ports.
Also, it claims the process is csrss.exe

I researched that, and i can see that in the task manager, under command line tab there are 2 instances of this running. But they are both in the exact same location and name. in the System32 folder. They are different file sizes, can one of them be the virus? Or does this file actually run 2 instances of itself?

Thanks,
Dan
