View Full Version : Access Violation?

I can't seem to get Spybot to work. I Googled around and found that I might fix the problem by going to Advanced Mode and specifying a directory under Settings. I did that (there hadn't been a directory specified before), but it didn't fix the problem. I don't know how this started, as Spybot always worked after updates before.

However, that did NOT solve the problem. As soon as I initiated a check, I got Access Violation after access violation. So what do I try next? I am set as the Administrator of the computer.

I'm using a Windows PC with Windows XP SP3, and Spybot 1.6.2.

As a sidenote, I think I may have the Vundu virus. An earlier run of Spybot seemed to indicate this; but all my other things don't seem to find it, and VunduFix said I did not have that infection. I don't know if this is related, but I thought I'd mention it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello,

Seems like you have a damaged advcheck.dll.

Please uninstall Spybot - Search & Destroy according to the following link (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/howto/uninstall.html).
Then make a fresh install of Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.6.2 (http://www.spybotupdates.com/files/spybotsd162.exe).

Make sure that you also delete this folders and all files in it:
C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\

Please note that the Application Data Folder is hidden. So if you can't find this folder please check your folder properties.

Best regards

If the Application Data Folder is hidden, how do I check the folder properties? Thanks.

Hello,

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Double-click on the My Computer icon.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
5. Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
6. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
9. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
10. Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Or have a look at this page (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/hiddenfiles.mspx) to see how to show hidden files and folders.

Okay, I followed your instructions and the re-installation worked fine. Thank you. However, no viruses, etc. were found; and I still think I have some virus/ad-ware issues.
