View Full Version : Google Searches Redirected

BruceZ
2011-06-17, 13:51
I ran Spybot and removed all threats. Still most of my google searches are being redirected by things called "wegosearch" and "boolean search". This started a few days ago. Why doesn't Spybot fix this?

The most serious threat removed by Spybot was virtumundo. I haven't noticed any other spyware type symptoms.

I did notice a BHO that I can't identify, and I removed it to no avail. It is identified only as "14cc694e" and uses file "mgmtapi32.dll".

Search results are redirected from both IE and Firefox, even Firefox SafeMode. It affects google, but does not seem to affect sweetIMsearch which is my default search engine in Firefox. Sometimes I can get a link in Firefox that I can't get in google, and then I can get it in google too!

I have replaced my full name with XXXX where it appears in the following log. Otherwise, I have changed nothing.

Thanks for any help.

============= FINISH: 6:03:42.36 ===============

We've seen popups that say something like "you've won the lottery, click for your prize", or your system has 1,426,250 viruses, click to remove", with a big OK button. Now you think, "I'm no dumbass", and just close the window by clicking the X. But the X isn't really a close button, and you get herpes.

My questions are:

1. What is the best way to respond when this happens? I'm thinking kill the process with process explorer.

2. What security settings (aside from not being in admin mode) would make it absolutely impossible for something like this to run an executable without prompting you first?

To clarify, it is the links returned by google that are affected, not the search itself. I've also seen it happen with bing.

Also, I disabled the BHO I mentioned. I did not remove it.

And it was the "virtumonde" virus that was removed by Spybot. I mistyped the name.

Hi,

Download GMER (http://www.gmer.net) here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
Double-click .exe that you downloaded
Click rootkit-tab, uncheck files option and then click scan.
Don't check
Show All
box while scanning in progress!
When scanning is ready, click Copy.
This copies log to clipboard
Post log (if the log is long, archive it into a zip file and attach instead of posting) in your reply. Post fresh dds logs (including attach.txt) contents too.

Hi

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide first.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

I ran ComboFix. Search results are still being redirected, this time by something called "abussinesssearch".

I now see a program running called MCD3232.exe which is taking up a lot of processing time (up to 68%) and when I try to kill it with process explorer, it just comes back. There is also a MCIDA32.exe.

I disabled my antivirus and firewall before running ComboFix. I didn't touch the computer at all during the scan. However, when it rebooted my machine, Windows prompted me for which user I wanted to log in as, and I clicked my name. Then while it was preparing the logs, it said not to start any programs, but some that usually start when I log in did start on their own. One of them was a dialog box from SpyBot complaining about a setting that had change. I still didn't touch it, but my antivirus may have started at this point. Right now not everything that usually starts is running, for example, my battery backup program PowerChute never started as it normally does.

I attached new dds files. Here's the ComboFix data:

As you probably already figured out, MCD3232.exe appears to be malware as per this McAfee webpage (http://www.mcafee.com/threat-intelligence/malware/default.aspx?id=431798) under added files. It is in the windows32 directory. I see the registry entry that it talks about added

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUNONCE\

MCD3232.exe is mentioned in the above ComboFix data.

ProcessExplorer gives me a description "AIDEX RUNTIME" and company name "AIDEX TEAM". There are other programs with the same AIDEX descriptions, they are

MFCUIW3232.exe
atmfd32.exe
KBDFR32.exe
webvw32.exe

There is also a BHO called atmfd32.exe which I disabled earlier.

After rebooting, MCD3232.exe is not taking up as much time, but it still runs, and it accesses the hard drive continuously.

I won't do anything until you tell me.

Hi,

Update MBAM and run a full scan with it. Post back the report.

BruceZ

That last suggestion killed me. After I updated mbam, it tried to restart. Then I got

"LSASS.EXE error. Application failed to initialize at 0xc0000005"

and XP wouldn't start. I could still move the mouse, but just a blank screen, and I couldn't even power it down from the power switch. I also couldn't bring it up in safe mode nor in the recovery console which failed on another file.

I forgot to menion that I had gotten a very similar error earlier when I tried to bring up a DOS command window. This was right after running ComboFix. Would it have made a difference?

I'm only here now because I'm on a borrowed machine. I took my machine in, and the guy seemed confident that he can deal with this in a few days. I never got an XP CD with my machine because it is all on the hard drive (lot of good that does now). I've been meaning to make a recovery disk, but I never got around to it. I think that should be added to the preliminary instructions on this site. Not sure if it would have save me though since I tried an old windows 98 CD, and I couldn't get it to boot from that.

Edit: See the steps below if you have the problem machine handy (I wasn't sure if you had already taken it to someone to repair).

Hi,

Let's try to restore back to earlier state with recovery console

1. Restart your computer
2. Before Windows loads, you will be prompted to choose which Operating System to start
3. Use the up and down arrow key to select Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
4. You must enter which Windows installation to log onto. Type 1 and press enter.
5. At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following bolded text, and press Enter:

cd erdnt\subs

6. At the next prompt, type the following bolded text, and press Enter:

batch erdnt.con

7. The erunt backups will begin copying.
8. At the next prompt, type the following bolded text, and press Enter:

exit

Windows will now begin loading. If all goes well post fresh dds logs.

I can't start recovery console either. It complains about A1C7802.SY_.

Anyway, I can't do anything now because my computer is in the shop.

Blade81

Ok. Let's see if they're able to sort out the issue.

BruceZ
2011-06-30, 01:22
I got my PC back from the shop today. XP starts again, and the google redirect problem seems to be resolved. I no longer see MCD3232.EXE running in process explorer, and it is no longer in the System32 directory. I don't see anything by the AIDEX TEAM in the process explorer anymore. I can bring up a DOS prompt with no problem.

The repair guy used a 3rd party recovery tool to fix Windows without having to do a clean boot, though this was fairly challenging. The virus was removed with Avast! The McAfee webpage that I mentioned also refers to Avast! as being able to detect this. I now have Avast! as a real time shield.

I don't know if there is a way to post the log from Avast! I was going to post new DDS logs, but Avast! said that the DDS program was dangerous. ;) I'll still post them if you think it would be a good idea. I don't seem to have any problems at the moment though.

Questions:

1. The recovery console still doesn't start. I never told the repair guy that this was broken. There is just a blinking cursor. I can do ctl-alt-del to restart. I'd like to get this working in case I have problems in the future. Do I just need to reinstall it?

2. What recovery software/startup discs would you recommend that I obtain so that I can recover from catastrophic problems like this in the future?

Hi,

1. The recovery console still doesn't start. I never told the repair guy that this was broken. There is just a blinking cursor. I can do ctl-alt-del to restart. I'd like to get this working in case I have problems in the future. Do I just need to reinstall it?
Let's remove your present version of recovery console and then let ComboFix install a fresh one.

1. Log on as local administrator.

2. Double click on "My Computer" icon on the desktop.

3. In "My Computer" open: Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> Mark the checkbox
"Show hidden files and folders" -and clear the "Hide protected operating system

files" checkbox (please press on "Yes" to the confirm message).

4. Double click on the %systemdrive% (usually "C" drive) and delete "cmdcons" folder and the cmldr file from
the root drive.

5. Right-click boot.ini on the system partition and select Properties, then clear the "Read-only" checkbox.

6. Double click on the "boot.ini" file (the file reside in the root of the %systemdrive%).

7. Remove the lines:

c:\cmdcons\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
UnsupportedDebug="do not select this" /debug

8. Save the boot.ini file and close the text editor. Do step 3. opposite to re-hide the files.

Then disable antivirus protection, download and run ComboFix (like you did earlier) and let it install recovery console. Post back the log it creates.

2. What recovery software/startup discs would you recommend that I obtain so that I can recover from catastrophic problems like this in the future?
I'll let you know about some options after dealing with the recovery console.
