View Full Version : DOS.Generic_c.RQ Virus Issue

Hi there,

First time poster here so bear with me.

Just recently, probably in the last few days, my free AVG has been flagging this virus every time the machine starts up. Asking it to move to the vault results in AVG bringing back a message saying "Object does not exist or is inaccessible". Clicking Go To File takes me to my Desktop/User folder, though there are no files in there, just folders.

I'm currently cleaning it up for a friend, so I've been running my usual spyware program, SuperAntiSpyware as well.

This caught a few tracking cookies and stuff, and also flagged a Generic_c Trojan, though it claimed to have eliminated it. This is the log (minus the page of tracking cookies).

Bill,

Right, so here's what happened.

Downloaded and ran aswMBR from my desktop. First time it downloaded the Avast database but I presume that's normal.

It whipped through the windows and system folders then got to my users/user/appdata/Blizzard Entertainment/Battle.net/something folder (screen cut it off) and then promptly blue screened with KERNEL_FRONT_OVERFLOW error. There was a bunch of memory addresses at the bottom of the screen. I have em written down if you need to see em.

Reset the computer and gave it another try, this time before AVG had flagged the virus. It got the same point and the computer soft reset itself.

Under these circumstances, I'm gonna hold of running Combofix til I hear from you.

Cheers bud

Isa

Greetings Isa,
If aswMBR won't work let's try GMER please do not run combofix until we analyze GMER.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here (http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip) or here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=5198).

Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/gmer_zip.gif

Right click GMER.exe select Run as Administrator. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

http://www.geekstogo.com/misc/guide_icons/GMER_thumb.jpg (http://www.geekstogo.com/misc/guide_icons/GMER_instructions.jpg)
Click the image to enlarge it

In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.

Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

In the event that GMER won't run in normal mode try running in Safe Mode.
Start the computer in “Safe Mode”, follow these steps:
As the computer is booting continuously tap the F8 Key which should bring up the Windows Advanced Options Menu.
Use the arrow keys to move to Safe Mode and press your Enter key.

Once you're done in Safe Mode and you want to get back into Normal Windows simply restart the computer like you normally would and let it boot normally.

Hey Bill,

Right, so I ran GMER. On the plus side, it didn't crash, however, the check boxes down the right hand side of the screen were all greyed out except for Services, Registry, Files and ADS. The drive selection box was also selectable though I only have the one drive so that's a bit of a moot point.

In any case, I also tried it in safe mode, same result.

So I scanned anyway, and have enclosed the text file.

Bill,

Right, Combofix ran without any complaints, though it should be noted that AVG has a maximum disable time of 15 minutes, so it restarted itself around stage 25/26 of the process. I disabled it again pretty quickly, though I have no idea whether this will have affected the scan.

I enclose the report log in the hope that you can make sense of it ;)

Also, AVG flagged the virus after Combofix rebooted and started writing the log file.

Thanks again for your time bud,

Isa

Hello Isa,
Combofix says it fixed cacaoweb. This is part of the generic-c trojan. How is your PC behaving now? Does AVG still find virus at boot up?

Isalan
2011-07-26, 04:21
Unfortunately yes, AVG is still complaining on start up, though the computer is running faster.

I may not have mentioned it in my original post but the file AVG points to is in my Windows/Sysytem folder. Theres a couple of random string folders involved, but the file ends UserData.bin.

Also, there is a more info option when AVG catches the virus, though following the page leads to AVG's knowledge base which contains no data on said virus. I've also done a google search for the virus, and the top answer is this thread, followed closely by a fairly shifty looking online virus scanner that I'm not going near for now.

Any of these details help?

If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Next

Hey Bill,

Weirdly, on start-up this morning, AVG didn't have complain about anything, which is strange cos I'm sure it was still flagging the virus when I turned it off before I went to bed last night.

Update:

Ran ESET as requested in IE. It found 11 threats all of which appear to Java related. Attached the log for you to look over.

Thanks,

Incidentally, after a reboot AVG is still complaining. I'm beginning to wander if the problem isn't with AVG in some way.

Alright Isa

Let' fix Java. :banghead:
To clear the Java Plug-in cache:
Click Start > Control Panel.
Double-click the Java icon in the control panel.
On the General tab, Click Settings under Temporary Internet Files.
On the Temporary Files Settings screen, Click Delete Files.
check all boxes
Click OK
Reboot the computer.

Next
Your Java appears to be down level.
Navigate to Control Panel then open on Programs and Features.
Highlight eachJava then click on Uninstall in tool bar.
Visit this site (http://www.java.com/en/) to down load and install the latest Java

Next
Download TFC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe) to your desktop

Close any open windows.
Double click the TFC icon to run the program
TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
Click the Start button to begin the process.
Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
The program should not take long to finish it's job
Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

When done reboot your PC a couple of times and let's see if that pesky virus message is gone.

Bill,

Good News! :bigthumb:

3 fresh reboots and AVG hasn't thrown a hissy fit at all.

I do believe you've solved, bud.

Bearing in mind your still in training I can't wait to see what you can do with your full Jedi powers XD

Anything else need to be done, or can we stick a pin in this?

Regards,

Isalan

Greetings Isalan,
No problem with when you run the tools, we have lots of time now.
Looking good now.

One more DDS to be sure.

These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them
With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Right click DDS.exe select Run as Administrator.
When done, two DDS.txt's may open.
Save both reports to your desktop.
Please include the contents of the following in your reply using Copy / Paste:
DDS.txt

P2P - I see you have P2P software UTorrent installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It likely contributed to your current situation. This page (http://p2p.malwareremoval.com/) will give you further information.
Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.
Please see this topic for more information:
Perils of P2P File Sharing (http://www.techsupportforum.com/security-center/virus-trojan-spyware-help/305923-perils-p2p-file-sharing.html).
I would strongly recommend that you uninstall this now. You can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

Next
I see that you have IE7 on your pc. You may not use IE but your pc does when it does updates. I recommend updating to IE9 from here http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=16792

Next
Your Adobe appears to be down level
Please visit this site (http://www.adobe.com/downloads/) Click on the Adobe Reader icon on the right side and you will be presented with the correct Adobe for your system.
Down load and install this Adobe please.

Hey bud,

Firstly, I wanted to thank you and any other guys who helped out. Your stars, the lot of ya.

Did the update to Adobe Reader, the IE9 update's gonna take a little more work as I need the 64-bit version, but don't worry bout a link, I've already tracked it down and will sort it out tomorrow.

As for UTorrent, I know the stigma that goes with such programs, but I'm a civil engineer by trade and P2P is by far the easiest way to shift the huge map files I need to get hold of, especially when various people are working on em. Saying that, I'd be lying if I said I'd never gone looking for an old film or two, so I guess I'll cut that out ;)

Finally, here's the DDS log:

Greetings Isalan,
Looking even better now. :bigthumb:

Time to cleanup our tools a bit :cleaning:
The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /Uninstall

Next
On your desktop, find DDS.scr or DDS.com, right click then select delete, do the same for DDS.txt and Attach.txt

On your desktop, find GMER.exe, right click then select delete, do the same forGMER.txt.

You should keep Malwarebytes, ESET and TFC. Update and run them on a regular basis to keep your pc running clean.

At Last
From the look of your logs are finally, All Clean and the machine seems to be performing as it should. You know how much work and effort you've had to put into getting it back into working order, so hopefully you can impress upon the others who use this machine, to be more careful.

For the future safety of this machine and your data, try to ensure they sit down and read the following threads: (it won't take them very long)

Cracked/Illegal Software (http://www.techsupportforum.com/f50/cracked-illegal-software-248501.html)

Perils of P2P File Sharing (http://www.techsupportforum.com/f50/perils-of-p2p-file-sharing-305923.html)

Think Prevention (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html)

If there aren't any more problems, we have some final housekeeping to tend to now.

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you follow these steps and look into the following free programs:

* Microsoft Windows Update - http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com/)
Visit regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

* SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions. After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items.
o SpywareBlaster is a preventative program. It sets flags in the registry to prevent the running of a specific list of bad spyware related ActiveX controls. It will block any bad ActiveX from running in Internet Explorer and Firefox if it's listed in their database (which you should update frequently). To view their database and list of restricted sites, launch the program and click on each of the tabs on the main display page.

* WOT (http://www.mywot.com/), Web of Trust, As 'Googling' is such an integral part of internet life, this free browser add on warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. It is especially helpful when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
o Green to go
o Yellow for caution
o Red to stop
WOT has an addon available for both Firefox and IE.

* Scan here http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ (http://secunia.com/software_inspector/)for out of date & vulnerable common applications on your computer

You will have a few days before this thread closes in order to post any questions, concerns or issues that we may help with.
Thanks for your patience and hard work. :thanks:
