View Full Version : Browser Hijacker suspected

Hey guys,

This morning my computer started showing symptoms of a browser hijacker. Whenever I click links from a search engine, I am automatically redirected to various advertisement sites.

I had the free version of Malwarebytes installed so I ran a full scan with that and it detected and fixed 14 infections (unfortunately it didn't save that log so I don't remember exactly where or what they were). While I was running the Malwarebytes scan, Symantec popped up two messages saying that it detected infections and gave me the option to delete the threats which I did. After the Malwarebytes scan finished, I did a Google search in Firefox and IE and found that the hijacker symptoms persisted. I ran another Malwarebytes scan, and it found nothing.

At this point I downloaded Spybot and tried to install, but I kept getting an error message stating Internal error: Failed to expand shell folder constant "userappdata." Thinking it could be because my account does not have admin rights, I tried installing under an admin account and got the same thing.

I'll be honest and say that I'm pretty sure (but not positive) the infections came from a Demonoid torrent. I'll be more than happy to uninstall my client (uTorrent) if requested.

I just backed up my registry with CCleaner and ran the DDS log tool. Any help you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated! Here is the DDS log:

You are running an Enterprise operating system and Symantec Endpoint. Is this a business, corporate, institutional computer or used in that environment?

Hey Tashi,

Thanks for the quick response. Yes it is a personal computer that I use in a work environment.

Hi wingsuiter,

Not sure how that computes. ;) Please see Personal computers (http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=25712&postcount=5)

Best regards.

I predominately use it for personal use, but also on the network at work. I understand if that blurs the line too much for you guys to help, but is there any way you could please take a stab at the Spybot installation error? Then hopefully a scan with Spybot can eliminate the rest of the nasties.
