View Full Version : Possible Vitumonde.prx infection firefox re-directing to advertisements

Breakfix
2011-07-30, 05:21
Hi

I wonder if you can help.

Recently firefox has been re-directing itself to advertising websites. For example, if I type in bbc in Google and within the results page I click on the bbc link it will get re-directed to some other website. This is happening alot. Sometimes it will go to the correct website but only after multiple attempts.

I performed a scan with Avira AntiVir and it found nothing.

However the results of a Spybot Search & Destory search was Virtumonde.prx.

I have perfomed various scans in safe and normal mode using Malwarebytes, Spybot, AVG but the laptop still appears infected as I am still being re-directed in firefox.

Can you help please? I have attached the DDS.txt and Attach.txt logs below.

Many Thanks

Hello and welcome to Safer Networking.

My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

Sorry for the delay in replying, the forum is very busy. If you still need help, please do the following:

Step # 1 Download and run DDS

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.infospyware.net/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.com)
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Step # 2: Download and Run Gmer

Please download gmer.zip (http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip) from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

***Please close any open programs ***

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOTKIT" entries unless advised by a trained Security Analyst

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan. Click No.

If you do not receive notice about possible rootkit activity remain on the Rootkit/Malware tab & make sure that the 'Sections' button is ticked and the 'Show All' button is unticked. Click the Scan button and let the program do its work. GMER will produce a log.

Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
Click OK.

GMER will produce a log. Click on the Save button, and save the log as gmer.txt somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

DO NOT touch the PC at ALL for Whatever reason/s until it has 100% completed its scan, or attempted scan in case of some error etc !

Please post the results from the GMER scan in your reply.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. The two DDS Logs (DDS and Attach.txt)
2. The GMER Log

Use multiple posts if you can't fit everything into one post.

Hi

Many thanks for your reply. I appreciate your help.

Before I run the programs and attach the logs I just have one question...

In step 2 you stated the following:

"If you do not receive notice about possible rootkit activity remain on the Rootkit/Malware tab & make sure that the 'Sections' button is ticked and the 'Show All' button is unticked."

I have download gmer.zip and run the GMER from the desktop. Once the program has finished its initial scan I can see that the default setting on the right hand side of the screen is that everything is ticked and the "show all" is unticked and grey out (see attached screen print). Is this how it you want it to be when I perform the scan?

Or do you mean that I should ensure that ONLY "sections" is ticked.

Can you clarify please?

Many thanks

Hi. :)

Make sure that the Sections button is ticked and the Show All button is unticked. You can also untick the IAT/EAT button as well.

All the other remaining buttons should remained ticked/have a checkmark by them when you do the scan.

C: is FIXED (NTFS) - 75 GiB total, 7.631 GiB free.

Your computer is getting low on free space. My suggestion is to go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any programs you no longer need or use. You can also transfer any movie, music or other files to a USB/Flash Drive or External Harddrive to clear up some space.

Step # 1:Remove two of your Anti Virus programs.

You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:

AVG 2011

Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus

ZoneAlarm Extreme Security Antivirus

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

Please remove two of them.

Also, your logs show that you have PC Tools AntiVirus 4.0.0.26, but I didn't see it on your Installed Programs list. Did you recently uninstall PC Tools Antivirus?

Let me know when you're down to one AntiVirus and we'll continue on. :)

Following your instructions I have now uninstalled AVG 2011 and Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus.

PC was uninstalled, I think more than a year ago. It seems that some traces of it still remain. How do I remove this?

Awaiting your next advice...

We'll be removing the leftover from PC Tools Antivirus shortly. :)

Step # 1: Download and Run ComboFix

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

*Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please post C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Note: This CFScript is for use on Breakfix's computer only! Do not use it on your computer.

Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. The ComboFix Log that appears after Step 1 has been completed.
2. A fresh DDS Log taken after Step 1 has been completed.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u26 (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp).
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Remove the following old versions of Java:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

Java(TM) 6 Update 4

Java(TM) 6 Update 7

Java(TM) 6 Update 20

Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

From your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Step # 2 Run CCleaner

CCleaner will remove everything from the temp/temporary folders but please note that it will not make back ups!

Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 24 hours
Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:

Clean all entries in the Internet Explorer section except Cookies
Clean all the entries in the Windows Explorer section
Clean all entries in the System section
Clean all entries in the Advanced section
Clean any others that you choose

In the Applications Tab:

Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section
Clean any others that you choose

Click the Run Cleaner button.
A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
Click OK and it will scan and clean your system.
Click exit when done.
If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO

Step # 3 Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
Before running a scan, click the Update tab, next click Check for Updates to download any updates, if available.
Next click the Scanner tab and select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
You can also access the log by doing the following:

Click on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware icon to launch the program.
Click on the Logs tab.
Click on the log at the bottom of those listed to highlight it.

Step # 1 Update Adobe Acrobat Reader

There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available. (See Note below)

First, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Adobe Reader 8.1.4.
Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link (http://get.adobe.com/reader/)
On the right Untick McAfee® Security Scan Plus if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
Click the Continue button
Click Run, and click Run again
Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

Note: Adobe Reader X (10.1.0) is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 5.0.2 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/index.php

If you decide to install Foxit 5.0.2 instead of Adobe, do the following during Foxit's Setup/Installation process:

Uncheck the following boxes:

I accept the License Terms and want to install Foxit Toolbar

Make Ask.com my default search

Create desktop, quick launch and start menu icon to eBay

ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html).

Vista/Windows 7 users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

Please go here (http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/run) to run the scan.

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox. Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk173/Dakeyras_album2/EOLS2.gif
When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.

Hi

- I have uninstalled Adobe Reader 8.1.4.
- I have updated Adobe Acrobat Reader with the latest version.
- The computer seems faster and firefox is no longer re-directing to adverts. Does this mean that the computer is free from any virus?
- I ran the ESET online Scanner. It found 3 items. The log file is below. Can you advise how I can remove these 3 items?
- Also can you advise whether PCTools is removed and if not can we remove it?

The ESET log is below along with the DDS log and attach.txt. log.

The computer seems faster and firefox is no longer re-directing to adverts. Does this mean that the computer is free from any virus?

Things are looking good. Besides those three files that ESET found and which we'll delete, I don't see any signs of a virus/malware in your logs. :)

Also can you advise whether PCTools is removed and if not can we remove it?

I don't see any signs of PCTools in any of the logs you posted. I say it has been removed. :)

I ran the ESET online Scanner. It found 3 items. The log file is below. Can you advise how I can remove these 3 items?

Do the following:

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
Double-click on the My Computer icon.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
After the new window appears select the View tab.
Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Be sure to re-hide your files once you are finished cleaning your computer.

Step # 1: Deleting Files/Folders

I need you to delete the files/folders I have marked in bold(if found):

C:\Documents and Settings\Yousra\Desktop\Updated Security\VirtumundoBeGone.exe
C:\Program Files\Yontoo Layers Runtime\YontooIEClient.dll
C:\Program Files\Yontoo Layers Runtime\YontooIEClient_2.dll

Let me know if you have any problems deleting those three files.

I deleted all 3 files.

May thanks for your help!

I really appreciate it! You're a star!

Firefox seems to be working fine now. As mentioned before it is no longer re-directing to adverts. Plus before if I were to type something the the Google search bar then try to hit the 'enter' button on the laptop keyboard then nothing would happen. It was as if the enter button didn't work at all in google. So I would have to use the mouse to click on the 'Google search' button. That problem now seems resolved the the 'enter' button is working properly.

Again, loads and loads of thanks!!!

Do you think I need to do anything else, or do you think that 'this computer is clean' -as Tangina would say from the movie Poltergeist?

If there are no more problems, then you're good to go. :)

Since your computer looks to be clean, now would be a good time to upgrade to Windows XP SP3. To do that, go to Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) and download and install SP3. Once that is done, reboot your computer and go back to Windows Update and download all the critical updates listed. Reboot once they are installed and repeat until there are no more critical updates left to download.

You can delete the following off of your computer:

DDS.scr
The two DDS Logs
GMER.zip
GMER.exe
The GMER Log

To remove ComboFix, do the following:

Go to Start > Run - type in ComboFix /Uninstall & click OK

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Please take the time to read my All Clean Post.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
Make sure the C:\ drive is selected and click OK. If your computer's Hard Drive is not located on C:, change it to the correct drive letter then click OK.
Select the More options tab
Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created..

Clearing your restore points is not something you should do on a regular basis. Normally, this process only needs to be done after clearing out an infestation of malware.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure This can be done by following these simple instructions: From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub frames across different domains to Prompt When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it asks you if you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
Click OK

Use An Antivirus Software and Keep It Updated - It is very important that your computer has an antivirus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a day. If you do not update your antivirus software, then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently It is important that you visit Microsoft Updates (http://update.microsoft.com/) regularly. This will ensure your computer has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Use the hosts file: Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate web pages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain web pages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional. Download mvps hosts file (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial HERE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html) If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button on the task bar at the bottom of your screen Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then doubleclick it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok..
Use an alternative instant messenger program.Trillian (http://www.trillian.cc/) and Miranda IM (http://www.miranda-im.com/) These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
Please read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279)

Please read Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial82.html)
If you are using Internet Explorer, please consider using an alternate browser: Mozilla's Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox) or
Opera (http://www.opera.com/download/).
If you decide to use either FireFox or Opera, it is very important that you keep them up to date and check frequently for updates of the browser of your choice.
Update all these programs regularly Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Here's a good website to read about Malware prevention:

If your computer is running slow, click here (http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials/runningslowly.php) for instructions on how to help speed up your computer.

Good luck!

Please reply one last time so that I know you have read my post and this thread can be closed.

Hi

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

Following your instructions in your last post I performed the following:

- I visited the Windows Update website and downloaded and installed all the available updates. This took many hours.

- I deleted DDS.scr, the two DDS Logs, GMER.zip, GMER.exe, and the GMER Log.

- I removed ComboFix.

- I cleared the existing system restore points and established a new clean restore point.

- I followed your instructions for making Internet Explorer more secure.

- I followed your instructions for setting the correct settings for files that should be hidden.

My next task is to update the hosts files and continue reading the articles/ links you supplied.

Many thanks for helping me!

If you think there is anything I have missed let me know otherwise I think you can close this thread.

Just one other point - can you advise what malware it was that I had?

Since you said that Firefox was being redirected, more likely than not you had a Goored infection. Its a type of malware that hits Firefox and causes redirects.

the link to the mvps host file is not working. do you have an alternative link?

Did you go here:

http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm

That page loads up just fine for me. You can try these instructions to get MVPS Hosts:

Step # 1: Download and Install MVPS Hosts

Download and unzip hosts.zip from here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.zip) to a folder, preferably C:\Hosts\.

Open up the C:\Hosts\ folder and double-click on the mvps.bat file, it will rename your present HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the new HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine. It happens very quickly so don't blink!

I'll go ahead and close this thread, but if you need to view it again you can do so in the Archives (http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=23) section of the forum. :)

Good luck and safe surfing!
