View Full Version : Suspected Google redirect thing.

So, here is the situation. I suspect I have some sort of google redirecting evil possessing my computer. It doesn't seem to affect Yahoo or any other search engines I have tried, only google. I have come here as a last resort after trying a few things myself, and finally finding out that when it gets bad you really have to come to a place like this unless you actually know what you are doing. So far I have tried the following:
-Running a boot scan and regular scan with Avast (boot always finds at least one thing, regular never finds anything)
-Running Spybot - Search and Destroy (first couple of times found a lot, now finds nothing)
-Running TDSSkiller (found nothing)
-Running Spyware Doctor (scanned only with trial version and supposedly found hundreds of things)
-Running "MBR" (but apparently it does not work on my computer) and
-Running "OTL" while trying to replicate someone elses fix (this was before I read that was a big no-no)
On that note, before reading the "Before you post" thread I had turned off the restore points on my computer during that period when I was trying to copy another guys fix. I have since re-enabled it, but I reckon all the old restore points are dead because of it, besides one from May that I have on a removable HDD I guess. Although I did do the Erunt thing as told in the "Before you post" thread. And with that, here is my DDS Log:

Hi
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.
Please continue as follows:

Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:
C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds log.
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

In Windows Vista & Windows 7 ERUNT has to be set up in a specific way to get automatic registry backups created daily. More information here (http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/backup-windows-vista-registry-daily-using-erunt/). However, you don't necessarily have to create one now.

And here is both the Combo Fix Log and a fresh Attach Log as attachments. I wasn't sure how you wanted me to upload them, whether as copy pasted text or zipped files, so I just zipped them for readability, but I can copy and paste them instead if needed. (Also wasn't sure if you wanted attach at all again, but I included it just in case, I figure if you don't you just won't use it right?)
Thanks for the logs :)
Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Well, the only noticeable symptom before was the Google redirect stuff, and that is definitely gone now. So as far as I can tell the system is running fine.
Concerning the logs, I shall post them the way I did last time since there seemed to be no objections, first the DDS text copy:

============= FINISH: 14:14:46.53 ===============
And here are the other logs as zipped attachments:
(As you may notice in the "attach" log, I could not uninstall the old Java Development Kit. The Runtime Environment went just fine, but when I try to kill the Dev Kit Updates I get an error along the lines of "error with Windows Installer Package, A DLL needed for this install could not be run.")
Hi,
Delete these files if found:
C:\Users\David 5\Desktop\desktop\Ancient Computer\WINDOWS\TEMP\ccu\CSBand.dll
C:\Users\David 5\Desktop\desktop\Ancient Computer\WINDOWS\TEMP\ccu\csip.dll
You could try to uninstall Java(TM) SE Development Kit 6 Update 18 with Revo Uninstaller (http://www.revouninstaller.com/).

OK, I have successfully deleted those files and removed the clingy Java thing with Revo uninstaller. All still seems well over here. Do you need me to post more logs, or is everything good?
In any case, I would like to thank you ahead of time for all your help. I really appreciate people like you who sacrifice their time and energy to help others. You are a complete life saver and I have no idea what I would have done without your help. So thank you, a thousand times, thank you!
You're welcome :)
If no issues left let's see the final steps.
THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT
Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.
A To disable the System Restore feature:
1. Click on the Start button.
2. Hover over the Computer option, right click on it and then click Properties.
3. On the left hand side, click Advanced Settings.
4. If asked to permit the action, click on Allow.
5. Click on the System Protection tab.
6. Select c: drive and click Configure...
7. Select Turn off protection
8. Press OK.
Repeat steps 6-8 for each hard drive.
B. Reboot.
C Turn ON System Restore.
Follow the steps like you did when disabling system restore but on step 7. select Restore system settings and previous versions of files -option.
Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
Click START then RUN
Now copy-paste Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK
UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER
IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.
If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.
Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Download and run Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/) and fix its findings.
Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.
Have a great day,
Blade

OK, I think I have done everything you asked. I cleared the old system restore points and then re-enabled after a reboot. Uninstalled ComboFix using the copy pasted script in run. Updated both Internet Explorer and Windows, and set the internet options for explorer as directed. Used Secunia to find a few obsolete programs and got rid of them (although it seems confused into thinking there is a Firefox version 3.x on the system due to the ERDNT cache, so even though I updated to 5.x it still lists it).
The system is still running nice and smoothly, no Google redirects or anything. I will attempt to remain vigilant with the updates so that it stays that way. I thank you again for all that you have done, and hope you have a great day too! (and week, and month and year hopefully):thanks:
You're welcome :)

Does PSI show you more details about that finding?

2011-08-15, 00:34
Actually, now it seems to no longer display it as an issue so never mind
I believe before the details just said there was an upgrade available (an earlier version than the one I had curiously), and showed the program location which was not in the firefox folder, but instead in the "C:\Windows\ERDNT\cache64" folder, which is why I assumed it was because of the backups or something.
Ok. Any other issues left or shall we see the case as resolved? :)

No other issues, the case can most definitely be called resolved. So I guess it is good bye, and thank you for all your patience and generosity. Good luck with your next case
Since this issue appears to be resolved ... this Topic has been closed. Glad I could help. :)
Note:If it has been three days or more since your last post, and the helper assisting you posted a response to that post to which you did not reply, your topic will not be reopened. At that point, if you still require help, please start a new topic and include a fresh DDS log and a link to your previous thread.
If it has been less than three days since your last response and you need the thread re-opened, please send me or other MOD a private message (pm). A valid, working link to the closed topic is required.
