This is strange. I saw (on this forum?) the information that a new Java 7 update was available so I repeatedly ran the update function in my "Java Control Panel" but it would not update, said it was already up to date. It was Java 6 # 26 I think.
Well I uninstalled Java and then went onto the Oracle site and downloaded Java again and now Java shows as Java 7.
I suppose that most people could get along without even having Java installed on their computer?

could get along without even having Java installed on their computer? Its possible, but some web sites wouldnt have full functionality. Try it and see how it goes, you can always reinstall it. At the least you should keep it updated and remove old versions.

Malware attacks are moving to the web and targeting unpatched outdated 3rd party applications more and more. Its a field day out there with Java (http://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/search-results?query=java&search_type=all&cves=on) and Adobe. (http://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/search-results?query=adobe&search_type=all&cves=on). A visit to
Secunia (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/), whose online scanner requires java will also be worthwhile. The download version, PSI, no Java needed. You might also be interested in the FF NoScript (http://noscript.net/) add-on. I have never used it myself but it certainly looks like it could be a useful add-on.
