hi,
this is an annoying one that wasn't picked up by spybot search&destroy. this pc had questscan installed. user uninstalled questscan but still when he was searching by typing in the search term through the IE URL it would first divert to questscan. despite questscan no longer available as search provider in IE a search through the registry revealed that questscan had modified the settings in other search engine's HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes entries to point to itself. this can also be seen when looking at the search providers in internet options, search settings, then select the search provider list and observe at the bottom of the window the "search address", "search suggestion address", "top search result address"). this can be fixed (without spybot search&destroy) by removing all search providers (you cannot remove the default search provider so you have to first get another search provider and make it the default).
