View Full Version : No idea what's wrong, but something's wrong.
Dont know how this computer got so messed up but it is. Its my girlfriends, the thing runs fine in safe mode but its frustratingly unresponsive otherwise. And it crashes after being on for about 5 minutes. In short, when its booted normally it just doesn't respond to anything, freezes, and crashes.

Hi,
IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.
µTorrent
MediaBar
I'd like you to read this thread (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282).
Uninstall the programs listed above (in red). When done, post fresh dds logs.
Hey, I couldn't find out how to remove MediaBar from the system, I see the addon in IE and I have it disabled, but I can't uninstall it there, and I can't find the exe to uninstall it in program files, its also not on the list of installed programs, regardless, heres a fresh DDS.

Oops, looks like it isnt installed anymore, I must have gotten rid of it between then and now without noticing that I did, lol.
Hi
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.
Please continue as follows:
Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.
Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:
C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds log.
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
I am currently running the computer in safe mode, because when I boot normally it crashes before I can get anything accomplished. I don't know why, but when I ran ComboFix, it warned me that MSSE Was enabled and running, but I checked the running processes, and MSSE wasn't running at all. Should I continue the scan? I'll await further instructions.
Please continue the scan.
The computer crashed and refuses to boot up anymore, I dont know why, maybe it just overheated, But I guess I will just reopen this topic if it ever starts working again.
Hi,
Do you get any error message? Did the problem begin after ComboFix run (did you let it run the scan?)?
Hi, It seems like the computer DID just overheat, I walked away from it and my girlfriend was using it, she came into the room saying that the computer crashed, I felt it and it was on fire, but it didnt want to start for hours even after it cooled down, it works fine now though. I ran combofix, here's the log. Periodically it would say "you need administrative permissions to perform this action." Upon restart, the computer produced a log, and froze again, so I had to hard boot it back into safe mode.

Hi,
I'm wondering if those issues are caused by possible hardware problem.
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.
Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
Please post contents of that file in your next reply.
I was wondering that too, but it seems strange that it would run completely fine in safe mode, but freeze when it boots normally, at any rate, I'm running Malwarebytes now.
I tried to run Malwarebytes twice, the computer got about 70-80k files into the scan and then the computer froze, both times. I'd estimate that it happened around the same time, so it's probably not coincidence.
Hi,
Try to run disk check by following method 2 here (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Check-your-hard-disk-for-errors). See if it finds any issues.
I followed the instructions on the webpage, restarted and let the disk check run. It found no errors, the entire process took about 10 seconds, much faster than I expected for that sort of thing. Windows booted normally, and promptly froze a few minutes later. I had both boxes checked, if that means anything.
Hi,
Let's defrag the hard drive. For defragging I'd use 3rd party solution. Good commercial ones are PerfectDisk (http://www.perfectdisk.com/home) and Diskeeper (http://www.diskeeper.com/diskeeper/home/diskeeper.aspx). Of free options I recommend MyDefrag (http://www.mydefrag.com/) and Piriform Defraggler (http://www.piriform.com/defraggler).
I ran the defrag and restarted, but it made no difference, are you saying that there are no traces of malware on the system?
Because I understand that you're probably busy, and you don't have to waste time walking me through troubleshooting steps :). I could have the computer looked at by an expert if the problem isn't due to malware. I was just hoping it was something that I could get fixed over a couple of days because I have no idea what's wrong with it.
Hi,
Let's try a couple of more things. First, see if you're able to run a quick scan with MBAM. After that try to run ESET online scanner.
* Go here (http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner) to run an online scanner from ESET.
Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click Start
When asked, allow the activex control to install
Click Start
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is UNchecked and the option Scan unwanted applications is checkmarked.
Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish. Copy paste findings back here (if anything found).
Nothing from MBAM, but it ran successfully this time, no hitches. I'm gonna have to run the online scanner later, whenever I get connected to a more stable wireless hotspot, the one I'm at is too slow to keep a constant connection.
Ok, please let me know if it'll take more than a few days.
Should have it in about 12-15 hours.
