View Full Version : PC extremely slow and high CPU usage

Hi - my computer has been running extremely slow recently. All applications, not just the internet, are affected. I have also noticed my CPU usage is often at 100% even when I am only using the browser. Thinking my issue was RAM related, I upgraded from 2.5GB RAM to 4GB RAM. Adding RAM did not solve my problem.

Malwarebytes and Zone Alarm scans have not identified any issues. I've also deleted temp files and defragged my hd.

Attached is my dds and and attach.txt (zipped). I have also used ERUNT to back up my registry.

Thanks in advance for your help.

If help still needed post fresh dds logs after making sure notepad has word wrap disabled (that way logs appear in more readable format).

Hi - please see updated DDS below. I have one additional symptom recently... often when I boot up my PC, it only brings up the wallpaper background and no icons or programs. When I reboot things load normally.

Hi

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

ComboFix ran for about 15 minutes. It completed step 50, then the message "Deleting files" was displayed and my PC rebooted. When it reboot, it displayed the message "Windows has recovered from a serious error".

ComboFix did not create a .txt log. Attached is my current DDS and attach.txt (do you need this each time?).

Hi,

Please see if there's ComboFix.txt file created in c:\qoobox or c:\combofix folder. If not please run ComboFix again (having antivirus protection disabled).

Attached is my current DDS and attach.txt (do you need this each time?).
Only when requested :)

I did confirm no ComboFix.txt file. I re-ran ComboFix (with my antivirus turned off again).

ComboFix updated itself and then ran with the same results. It again reboot my system and displayed the message "Windows has recovered from a serious error". Again no ComboFix.txt file.

Hi,

If possible try to run ComboFix in safe mode.

When I boot in Safe mode and try to execute ComboFix, it says that I am still running my Zone Alarm anti-virus and asks me to close Zone Alarm. Zone alarm is not showing as a running process and I don't have a Zone Alarm icon in my system tray. I don't believe Zone Alarm is running, but ComboFix warns against running ComboFix when an anti-virus is running.

If I run Zone Alarm, then close Zone Alarm, ComboFix still indicates that I am running Zone Alarm anti-virus.

How can I be sure Zone Alarm is not running? Am I ok to run ComboFix? I am hesitant given the number of warnings from ComboFix.

Hi,

If you see any of these processes running stop them:
vsmon.exe
IswSvc.exe
zatray.exe
ForceField.exe
mantispm.exe

Then run ComboFix (if still warning is shown ignore it).

None of those files were active, so I allowed ComboFix to run (in Safe mode). The process completed this time.

I re-ran the process in case I missed a step.

The tool did not detect an mbr infection and completed. I then clicked Start>Run and typed mbr -f (then Enter). I did this twice as requested. This process runs for only a split second.

I re-ran helpasst -mbrt and the log appears below. Is this as expected?

Hi,

Re-run ComboFix and post back its log. How's the system running now?

Hi, I again ran ComboFix (in Safe Mode). Log appears below.

My system is still extremely slow and often boots only to the wallpaper (no icons appear or the Start menu). Even bringing up Explorer takes about 30 seconds.

Has the hard drive been defragged lately? For defragging I'd use 3rd party solution. Good commercial ones are PerfectDisk (http://www.perfectdisk.com/home) and Diskeeper (http://www.diskeeper.com/diskeeper/home/diskeeper.aspx). Of free options I recommend MyDefrag (http://www.mydefrag.com/) and Piriform Defraggler (http://www.piriform.com/defraggler).

I used the Windows defragger about a month ago but it didn't help performance.

I am currently running MyDefrag (it's been running for over 24 hrs) and will post a performance update once it completes.

MyDefrag has just completed - this took several days on my 160gb HD!

I still see my usage spike to 100% even when I open a webpage. Is that normal?

Other applications seem to open faster. Is it possible I have too many anti-virus / anti-spam apps running at the same time? I have Zone Alarm and Spybot active.

Does it stay at 100% for long time? If not then it's normal.

I've been testing the PC to check performance...

It does seem a little faster and although it spikes to 100% utilization, it only stays there for a few seconds. I would not expect such a spike when I am only running Internet Explorer but it does come back down.

I still have issues when booting -- it occassionally boots to only the wallpaper (no icons or programs). I don't have a large photo or anything for my wallpaper.

I also note that the icons on my desktop sometimes have to rebuild even after I close down a single session of Explorer.

Could there be something in the registry that is causing an issue? If I don't have a virus or malware issue, and my hd is now defragged and I have 4gb RAM... could it be that I'm just in need of an upgraded PC? Could be - but it's odd that my current PC was running ok until just a few weeks ago and I didn't really change/add anything.

Or is it worth re-imaging my current computer?

I can also run the other defrag options on MyDefrag, although I'm assuming since the initial run took several days that (1) my hd was seriously defragged and (2) the program has cleaned up my hd to a large extent.

I'm just not sure where my issue is if no virus or malware.

Hi,

Run a disk check by following "How to run Chkdsk from My Computer or from Windows Explorer" instructions here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265/en-us) (check both checkboxes mentioned).

This is currently running -- I will post results once it finishes.

The utility completed but did not seem to find any issues. Overall, performance is about the same and it's taking about 30 seconds for me to launch internet explorer. Other computers on my home network are much faster (5-10 seconds) and I haven't otherwise had issues with my internet.

If we don't see any issues with anything in the registry and no viruses/malware, I would consider reinstalling (or uninstalling) any programs.

Or... am I better of just reformatting my entire PC and reinstalling all of my programs? I have all of my data already backed up. I would consider a new PC but my current setup has a 2.8Ghz processor, 4gb RAM, and 160gb HD (most media is stored on an external hd). I do not believe it's the hardware limitations of the computer that are my issue.

Any other thoughts or recommendations?

Thanks again for all your assistance.

I'd recommend reformatting.

I have run all of the scripts on MyDefrag and my computer seems to be running much faster now. I will continue to do some clean up but I suspect my issue was an overly defragged hd and the standard Windows refrag program wasn't fixing anything.

I will reformat if needed, but I am trying to avoid doing that unless needed.

Thanks again for your help and suggestions. If there are other clean-up apps that you would recommend, please let me know. The MyDefrag app has been helpful.
