Since about two updates ago (2 weeks), Spybot 1.6.2.46 loads OK, and I can click to any of the menu options. But when I click Check for Problems, it goes to the scan screen, but nothing happens. I've let it sit for an hour with no action whatever (it used to take 30 minutes to do a scan). If I click Stop Check, it says "unloading user registry hives -- might take a while." Again, nothing else happens. I have to use Task Manager / End Process to kill Spybot. Any ideas?

Try booting into safe mode first, then see if the Spybot scan will run:

Reboot your computer into SafeMode by doing the following:

Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, begin tapping F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Spybot ran perfectly in Safe Mode. So what is preventing it from running in normal mode? I've never had this problem before.

Good,I'm glad Spybot ran in safe mode. :)
I'm not sure what might be preventing Spybot from running in normal mode, but when you run in safe mode most startup programs are bypassed. So,it might be worthwhile to see what is running on startup.

This link shows how to export your startup list:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/howto/startup.html
If you could export it,and then copy and paste your startup list here,I'd appreciate it.

That's not an overly long startup list, and I don't really see anything that should take so many resources that Spybot wouldn't run.

You might want to try this:Down by your computer clock, rightclick and temporarily shut down anything running that isn't needed at the moment, and see if the Spybot scan will run in normal mode after that.
Please leave Antivir and Zone Alarm running, though.

Please let me know how it goes. :)
