View Full Version : Blue Screen says Volume is dirty.
CaddyDaddy
2011-11-05, 00:06
I get a blue screen that appears only when I run long drawn out processes like when I run a scan with Malwarebytes Anti Malware or run an Avast scan. This usually happens about 20-30 minutes into the process. Sometimes this also happens when I run a disk defrag. Everything is fine when I run Spybot Search and Destroy Search for Problems. I find no issues with that. The scan completes with nothing found. I copied some screen shots of the Error Signature just in case some one needs them.

Hi and Welcome!! :) My name is Jeff. I would be more than happy to take a look at your malware results logs and help you with solving any malware problems you might have. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and know that I am working hard to get you a clean and functional system back in your hands. I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
IMPORTANT NOTE : Please do not delete, download or install anything unless instructed to do so.
DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision. Doing so could make your system inoperable and could require a full reinstall of your Operating System and losing all your programs and data.
Having said that....Let's get going!!
----------
GMER
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here (http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip) or here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=5198).
Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.
http://www.geekstogo.com/misc/guide_icons/GMER_thumb.jpg (http://www.geekstogo.com/misc/guide_icons/GMER_instructions.jpg)
Click the image to enlarge it
In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)
Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries.
----------
It looks like only half of the DDS log was posted here. Could you look and make sure that there wasn't anymore that was there? Also, in your next reply please post the log created by GMER. :)

Hi CaddyDaddy,
Please read through these instructions to familarize yourself with what to expect when this tool runs
Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.infospyware.net/antimalware/combofix/)
* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs (http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_to_Disable_your_Security_Programs_t96260.html)
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/RCUpdate1.png
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/RC2-1.png
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Jeff,
I attached the log file from ComboFix. Thanks for all your help with this problem.
CaddyDaddy
Hi CaddyDaddy,
I need some information on some unidentified files. We will use Virustotal Please submit these files for analysis
To submit a file to virustotal, please click VirusTotal (www.virustotal.com)
copy and paste the following into the upload a file box (one at a time if more than one file is listed)
c:\documents and settings\Hal\Application Data\inst.exe
scroll down a bit and click "send file", wait for the results and post them in your next reply.
Please note that sometimes the scans take a few minutes. Please ensure that the scan has completed and the results are complete before submitting the next sample. Also please make sure each result is clearly identified as to which sample they belong to.

Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/CFScriptB-4.gif
Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

I ran the file " c:\documents and settings\Hal\Application Data\inst.exe" in VirusTotal, it gave me information....but I failed to copy that information into a post. My mistake, because now after running ComboFix as directed, I cannot go back and run that file. I continue to get a remark that the "file not found" when try to I upload it. I copy and pasted as directed to no avail. Please advise.....

I did what you said, copy and pasted "c:\documents and settings\Hal\Application Data\inst.exe" and successfully uploaded and sent the file. I received some information back, but I mistakenly did not copy and paste the VrusTotal log file. now after running ComboFix, I cannot get the file to upload to VirusTotal. My computer says the file cannot be found.
But here is the ComboFix log file of the script you had me run in ComboFix:

Hi CaddyDaddy,
Looks like the reason you couldn't find the file is because ComboFix removed it. :)
-----------
I see that you have Malwarebytes on your computer. Please open Malwarebytes, update it and then run a Quick Scan. Save the log that is created for your next reply.
------------
ESET Online Scanner
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET Online Scan
Note: It is recommended to disable on-board anti-virus program and anti-spyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your anti-virus along with your anti-spyware programs.
As a Vista/Win7 user you will need to right click your browser icon and select "Run as Administrator" in order to run this scan.
Do not use this instance of your browser for anything besides doing this scan
When the scan is complete and the results saved, close that instance of your browser
Open a new one the usual way and post the results in this topic.
Right-click and Run as Administartor on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
ESET OnlineScan (http://eset.com/onlinescan)
Click the http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetOnline.png button.
For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
Click on http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetSmartInstall.png to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
Double click on the http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetSmartInstallDesktopIcon.png icon on your desktop.
Check http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetAcceptTerms.png
Click the Start button.
Accept any security warnings from your browser.
Check http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetScanArchives.png
Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked
Push the Start button.
ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin
scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
When the scan completes, push http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetListThreats.png
Push http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetExport.png, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as
ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
Push the Back button.

Jeff,
I was able to run a Malwarebytes quick scan with no issues. I saved the log. However, my blue screen issues returned while running the online scan. When the blue screen appeared on the online scan...my system will not reboot. I keep getting the blue screen. I took some pictures of the message if you need me to attach those.
Today, I removed the hard drive and placed it another computer and when I booted up (as a secondary drive) that computer did a chkdsk, found and deleted some files, also fixed a bad cluster. The hard drive at first appeared to be working fine in that computer. I ran a defrag on it (Microsoft), but it would only get to 30% complete. Also, I ran another chkdsk and when it gets to 4 of 5 stages it remains stalled at 14% complete. I will reinstall it in its original computer later this afternoon. I did notice that as a User in Documents and Settings on the drive I’m not listed there any longer. Other Users that I set up are there, but my User name is no longer there. Maybe the hard drive is bad or the Motherboard is bad or the SATA connections are the issue..... Will post later......
Thanks \\CaddDaddy
Hi CaddyDaddy,
When you get a chance let me see what the messages were. That might give us a better idea. :bigthumb:

Jeff,
Computer crashed again..... I again did some tests on hard drive on another computer...Hard drive appears to be fine... We will see... Before I run that onlne scan again, in fear of getting blue screen from the process I will send a screen shot I took with my camera when it was performing the scan. The other 2 shots are examples of the Blue screens I get.... I think I have a nasty bug in here. Also, It could be in my external hard drive as well. AVG found a bug/worm called generic2.aurp in a folder that is on that drive and probably on this drive. I will leave the external unconnected until we get this problem fixed with the internal hard drive (boot drive).
Thanks,
Hal

Jeff,
Got the system to do a complete online scan!
Checking on the threats found, does it appear to be my problem?
Posted scan results as attachment.

Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

How is your system running now? :)

Jeff,
Here's the contents of the CF log. The computer seems to be running better. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
That log was way too large to paste in here, so I attached it.
Does that mean I have many issues?
Once we fix this issue for good please recommend some software that may help to prevent this in the future. Also, Can we look at the external hard drive when we get this resolved. Thank yo so much for the help!

Hi CaddyDaddy,
AVG found a bug/wormDid you mean Avast or AVG?
--------------
P2P - I see you have P2P software BitTorrent installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections and possibly Identity Theft. It likely contributed to your current situation. This page (http://malwareremoval.com/p2pindex.php) will give you further information.
Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.
I would strongly recommend that you uninstall these now. You can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.
----------
You have an older version of Adobe Reader. You can download the current version HERE (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html)
You may want to consider Foxit Reader (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/index.php) instead. It may be a bit lighter on resources.
Visit their support forum
Foxit Forum (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/bbs/forumdisplay.php?f=3)
In either case you should uninstall Adobe Acrobat and Reader 8.1.2 first. Be sure to move any PDF documents to another folder first though.
----------
Please download JavaRa (http://raproducts.org/click/click.php?id=1) to your desktop and unzip it to its own
folder
Run JavaRa.exe (double-click for XP/right-click and Run as Administrator for Vista), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then
click Remove Older Versions.
Accept any prompts.
Open JavaRa.exe (double-click for XP/right-click and Run as Administrator for Vista) again and select Search For Updates.
Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.
----------
In your next reply please let me know about the AVG / Avast question and let me know if you have any problems with your updates.

Jeff,
As you suggested, I uninstalled P2P client BitTorrent. I like what I read about Foxit, so I installed that. I ran a few documents with it...so I'll keep it. Your right about it being lighter on resources than Adobe. I followed your instructions to remove older versions of Java and d/l and installed the latest JRE.
My PC seems to be moving along much faster now. Apps open quicker and so far no blue screens when running time consuming apps. I did a defrag (Auslogics) last night, HD was 58% fragmented. This only took about 30 minutes.
I do have a concern for an annoying pop up that keeps appearing at random....I will attach the screen shot for your viewing and any suggestions on what to do about that.
About the Avast/AVG confusion......I booted from a different hard drive that I hooked up just to see if the problem was with my SATA connections in my Motherboard. A couple of years ago Dell had me change from the SATA 0 to SATA 2 connection. They told me something was wrong there. So I thought that after my H/D kept crashing that that may be the issue. But the temporary H/D booted fine. However the temporary H/D has AVG on it. As soon as the temporary H/D booted the AVG ran a scan on my external drive (I forgot to disconnect it). That's when I discovered there might be issues there. I only use the external H/D to store data. It does not have an operating system on it. I just keep all my video, music and pictures on it. AVG quarantined that file (generic2.aurp). Do we need to run a check on the external?
Also, a question...since I work from home at times my job recently started offering us that bring work from home to work one of two Virus programs. I don't know about either one. I have read that both are good, but then have read both have their drawbacks. All depends who's writing the article. They are McAfee Virus Scan Plus and Symantec Endpoint. If no other choice, which one of these would you prefer?
Thanks for your help,
CaddyDaddy
Hi C/D,
Glad to hear things are running better.
I can't seem to make out the screenshot you put here. I am having some trouble resizing it. What is it saying?
As for the AV programs...I am not familiar with either having not used them myself but I think that I would go with Symantec Endpoint if it were given to me and was paid for. Personally I use Microsoft Security Essentials. It is really light on resources and good on the pocketbook...free LOL!! :)

Jeff,
This also happens when I open Internet Explorer. I rarely use IE so if I have to delete it I could...but I'd rather fix this annoying pop up/.

CaddyDaddy
Hi C/D,
You can disable the Drive Letter Access add-on in IE8 by clicking Tools then Manage Add-ons. Find the Drive Letter Access add-on in the list, right click it, and then click Disable.
Let me know if that fixes it. :) That is usually associated with a CD-Burner program like Roxio or Sonic.

Jeff,
No matter which option on the pop up I leave checked or unchecked I get an error message. I attached the error message.

Hi C/D,
Try going to the website here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378) and scroll down to the Microsoft Fix It button and press Run Now. Once that completes, reboot your system and then see if the problems are still there.

Jeff,
No go on that fix
CD
Hi CD,
The error message you are receiving seems to be related to the Sonic Solutions software you have on your system. Sonic Solutions addons seem to be incompatible with IE 8.
You could try to run IE8 with no add-ons.
You can do that by clicking on Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer 8 (No Add-ons).

Jeff,
I did as you suggested in the previous post. I get that same Error message.
CD
Hi CD
We should probably run sfc /scannow.
Open a Command Prompt > copy/paste sfc /scannow into the command prompt and then press Enter.
Once that has completed, reboot your system and let me know if you are still having the problems. :)

Jeff,
Same issue, after running sfc /scannow and reboot I continue to get that error message when opening up IE.

Hi CaddyDaddy,
Please download HD Tune (http://www.hdtune.com/download.html) (the free version not the trial), run an error scan on your primary harddrive (full not quick) and report back if any blocks aren't green. It tests your hard drive for bad sectors.

Jeff,
I ran the utility 3 times. My computer would crash and blue screen towards the end of the run, about 50 minutes into it.
I attached a screen shot about 2 minutes before it did the crash.
Also I attached screen shots of what the Error said.....
But in case you cannot read the shots I typed below.
Get Blue Screen then Computer reboots itself. Then a Windows message pop up says,
“The system has recovered from a serious error.
A log has been created.
For more information about this error. click here”
I click and it says,
“Error signature
BCCode: d1 BCP1: 00000010 BCP2: 00000002 BCP3: 00000000
BCP4: F7B791A0 OSVer: 5_1_2600 SP: 3_0 Product: 768_1
To view technical information about this error report. click here”
I click and it says,
The following files will be included in this error report.
C\DOCUME~1\Hal\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER749d.dir00\Mini111311-01.dmp

Jeff,
Just in case this helps. I took a picture of the blue screen with my phone and attached it.

Hi CaddyDaddy,
I am not seeing any malware in the logs you have provided. I think that this may be a problem with Windows itself. I think that you could be better helped by going here (http://forums.whatthetech.com/index.php?showforum=119) and posting a new topic there. Be sure to post a link to this topic so that they can see what we have done here. If they look over everything and believe it still may be malware related we can dig deeper. :)
Once you finish up over there, come back here and we can do some updates, remove our tools and then I will give you some good information on keeping your system more secure.
Since this issue appears to be resolved ... this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance.
