Hello ThankYou and :welcome:

My name is JonTom

Malware Logs can sometimes take a lot of time to research and interpret.

Please be patient while I try to assist with your problem. If at any time you do not understand what is required, please ask for further explanation.

Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to get your system clean.

Read every reply you receive carefully and thoroughly before carrying out the instructions. You may also find it helpful to print out the instructions you receive, as in some instances you may have to disconnect your computer from the Internet.

PLEASE NOTE: If you do not reply after 5 days your thread will be closed.

Please let me know if you have run any temporary file cleaners since becoming infected. From this point forward please refrain from running any tools that clean your temporary files.

I can not run any program in regular mode so I am operating out of SAFE MODE Are you able to boot into Safe Mode with Networking?

If so, please download the following tools and run them from Safe Mode with Networking:

Unhide

Download and run unhide.exe by grinler from here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe) and save the file to your desktop.
Run the tool and allow it to complete.

Please scan your system with GMER

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/gmer_zip.gif
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here (http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip) or here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=5198).

Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.
In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.

Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOTKIT" entries

Please post the GMER log in your next reply. If you encounter any problems with the scan come back and let me know.

Security Check

Please download Security Check by screen317 from here (http://screen317.spywareinfoforum.org/SecurityCheck.exe) or here (http://screen317.changelog.fr/SecurityCheck.exe) and save the file (called securitycheck.exe) to your desktop.
Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box (NOTE: If you are running Vista or Win7 please Right click and select "Run as Administrator"..
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document in your next reply.

Let me know if your missing items are visible after running unhide and post the GMER and SecurityCheck logs in your next reply :)

ThankYou

I ran the unhide Program and still nothing. I am missing all my desktop icons and all the programs in the start menu show "Empty" when clicked.

Hello ThankYou

Thank you for the logs

Please let me know if you have run any temporary file cleaners since becoming infected This is a very important question as the answer will determine how we approach the problem. Before we proceed please let me know if you recall cleaning out your temp files after becoming infected.

Please download SystemLook by JPShortstuff

Please download SystemLook by JPShortstuff by clicking here (http://jpshortstuff.247fixes.com/SystemLook.exe) or here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/jpshortstuff/SystemLook.exe) and save the file (called SystemLook.exe) to your desktop.
Double click SystemLook.exe to run the program.
Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:

:dir
%Temp%\smtmp /s

Click the Look button to start the scan.
When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Please post the systemlook log in your next reply along with the answer to my question :).

ThankYou

Hello,

i am sorry i missed out the question. The only program I ran in safe mode and on startup is SPYBOT i believe it does erase the temporary files. I have not used any other antivirus or malware.

Hello ThankYou

If the temporary files have been emptied then we may have lost the files required to create your desktop icons and items in the Start Menu.

Please open Spybot and click on the Recovery Button to check if any backups were made from the last run. If a list of backups is present in the recovery list see if you can copy the list here for me to review.

If the list is empty, we may have to try another method to get the missing files back.

Please let me know if any backups have been created in your next reply and then we will move on :)

ThankYou

Hello ThankYou

let me know how u would like me to show u those logs I am not convinced that those particular logs will help us.

I still can only run the oc in safemode This is being caused by the malware infection. Lets address the malware issues and then see if we can get the missing items back.

Please download the following tool using safe Mode with Networking:

Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.infospyware.net/antimalware/combofix/)

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here (http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_your_Security_Programs_t96260.html&pid=494216#entry494216).
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/RCUpdate1.png

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/RC2-1.png

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes: Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Should there be issues with internet afterward:

In IE: Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab -> Lan Settings -> uncheck "use a proxy server" or reconfigure the Proxy server again in case you have set it previously.

In Firefox: Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection and uncheck the proxyserver, set it to No Proxy.

ThankYou

Hello ThankYou

sorry for the long delay Not a problem :)

When you ran aswMBR a file called MBR.dat would have been created on your desktop.

I would like you to zip this file up and attach it to your next post.

To do this, Right click on the file and select Send to ===> Compressed (Zipped) Folder.

The zipped file will appear on your desktop. Attach it in your next reply and run the following tool:

TDSS Killer

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
Download TDSSKiller (http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.zip) and save it to your Desktop.
Extract its contents to your desktop.
Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and double click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
If no reboot is required, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

ThankYou

Hello ThankYou

Lets proceed as follows:

Please work through the following steps

Open Notepad (Click on "Start", then on "Run" and type "notepad" (without quotations) in the Open field, then click on "OK").

NOTE: Do not Use Wordpad or any other text editor except Notepad or the script will fail.

Copy and Paste the text in the quotebox below into the open Notepad window:

File::
D:\LaunchU3.exe
D:\Setup_FlipShare.exe
D:\wdsync.exe

Registry::
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{288cdc54-a39f-11e0-9af1-001f3a384cdd}]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{69bf104a-217e-11e0-9ab0-001f3a384cdd}]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{7583f047-fd56-11df-9a97-001f3a384cdd}]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{c58b2295-bf00-11e0-9afb-001c230b9a11}]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{cdb95d88-b14f-11e0-9af4-001c230b9a11}]

Save this as "CFScript.txt" (including the quotation marks), change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and save it to your desktop.

Close any open browsers.

Disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Refering to the picture below, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Once the log is produced, re-engage your resident anti virus.

Please perform the following scan:

Please download MalwareBytes AntiMalware by clicking here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) and save the file (called mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.

Double click on the mbam-setup.exe icon to install the program.
Follow the prompts during installation and have the Installation Wizzard create a desktop icon.
Once installed, double click on the MalwareBytes AntiMalware icon to launch the program.
Click on the "Update" tab and then on "Check for Updates".
The program will now install the latest Malware definition files.
Once complete, click on the "Scanner" tab, select "Perform Quick Scan"and then click on "Scan".
Once the program has scanned your computer, a log file will be created in Notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.

If the scan detects any Malware-related objects, make sure that everything is checked, and click "Remove Selected" <– Very Important.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer.
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the "Logs" tab.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart your computer, please do so immediately.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.

Please post the ComboFix log and the MBAM log in your next reply.

ThankYou

Hello ThankYou

I can not run any program in regular mode so I am operating out of SAFE MODE Is this still the case? Are you able to boot into Regular Mode at all?

Lets get your Java updated and then run an Online Scan to check for any leftovers:

Please update your Java

To update your Java, Click on "Start" then on "Control Panel" and then on the Java icon (looks like a coffee cup).
In the window that opens, click on the "Update" tab, and then on "Update Now".
Your Java should begin to update. Please follow any prompts that you receive.

Please run the following scan

Note:Internet Explorer is preferred for this scan, although it will run with other browsers.
Note for Vista/Windows 7 Users: ESET is compatible but Internet Explorer must be run as Administrator. To do this, right-click on your Internet Explorer icon and select "Run as Administrator".
Please disable your real time security programs before performing the scan.

Scan your system with Eset Online Scanner (http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/)
Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use.
Click the http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetOnline.png button.
For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps).
Click on http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetSmartInstall.png to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
Double click on the http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetSmartInstallDesktopIcon.png icon on your desktop.

Check http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetAcceptTerms.png
Click the http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetStart.png button.
Accept any security warnings from your browser.
Check http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetScanArchives.png
Make sure that the option to "Remove Found Threats" is UN checked.
Push the "Start" button.
ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
When the scan completes, push http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetListThreats.png
Push http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetExport.png, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
Push the http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetBack.png button.
Push http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetFinish.png

Please post the ESET log in your next reply.

ThankYou

Hello ThankYou

I can run and operate in regular mode - My original combofix was in safe mode so i continued there Thanks for letting me know.

Once the machine has been cleaned you will have to rebuild/replace the missing items from your start menu/desktop. I will provide you with come guidance on the required procedure in due course, but for the moment lets continue:

ESET has detected some files held in ComboFix quarantine, and some infected restore points. We will deal with these later (they can cause no harm to your machine provided you do not perform a system restore). ESET also detected a file which needs to be removed.

I would like you to run the following Combofix script from Regular Mode

If Combofix informs you that an update is available please allow it to install.

File::
C:\Documents and Settings\Eli Lipskar\My Documents\Downloads\setup_1116236.exe

Please post the ComboFix log in your next reply.

Are you still receiving the "Disk Error Message" when you restart your machine?

ThankYou

Hello ThankYou

Lets try that file removal again:

Please disable Spybot Teatimer

Launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
On the left hand side, click "Tools", then click on the "Resident" icon in the list.
Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active" box.
Click the "System Startup" icon in the List.
Uncheck the "TeaTimer" box and "OK" any prompts.
If Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted.
Exit Spybot S&D when done.

Please download OTM

Please download OTM by OldTimer by clicking here. (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTM.exe)
Save the file (called OTM.exe) to your desktop.
Double click on the OTM.exe icon to run the program. (Note: If you are running on Vista/Windows 7, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

:Processes
explorer.exe

:Files
C:\Documents and Settings\Eli Lipskar\My Documents\Downloads\setup_1116236.exe

:Commands
[Purity]
[EmptyTemp]
[Emptyflash]
[Start Explorer]
[Reboot]

Return to OTM, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.

Click the Moveit! button.
Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
Close OTM.
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File -> Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Please post the OTM log in your next reply along with a new DDS scan log.

ThankYou

Hello ThankYou

Thats a little odd but no major problem. We can remove the file manually:

Please search for the following files

NOTE: DO NOT double click on ANY executable (.exe) files in the next step!!!
Right-click your "Start" button and select "Explore".
Navigate to and delete the following files/folders in bold.

C:\Documents and Settings\Eli Lipskar\My Documents\Downloads\setup_1116236.exe <=== Delete this file.

Once deleted, run DDS and post the new scan log in your next reply.

ThankYou

Hello ThankYou

Your log appears to be clean :)

Now is the time to install AVG.

Once it is installed, please try the following to re-acquire your missing start menu items:

To manually recreate "All Programs" entries, follow these steps...
Download App Paths (http://sourceforge.net/projects/apppaths/files/AppPaths.exe/download)
Double click on AppPaths.exe to run the program.
Keep the program open.
In this example I'll recreate an entry for Avast antivirus program.

Go Start > All Programs.
Right click on Avast entry, click "Properties".

http://209.85.48.8/228/109/upload/p4481214.gif
NOTE: Make sure you right click on Avast program, NOT on Avast folder.
You'll see this window:

http://209.85.48.8/228/109/upload/p4481211.gif
Due to the damage caused by the infection, you'll find "Target" box empty.
Go back to AppPaths window and find Avast entry.
Right click on Avast line, click "Edit".
A pop-up window will open:

http://209.85.48.8/228/109/upload/p4481212.gif
Highlight everything in "Path" box, right click on it, click "Copy".
Go back to Avast "Properties" window, right click inside "Target" box, click "Paste".
IMPORTANT! Add quotation marks at the beginning of the path and at the end.
Click OK and you're done.

http://209.85.48.8/228/109/upload/p4481213.gif

In case the program's link shows as (empty):

http://209.85.48.8/228/109/upload/p4481404.gif
Open Windows Explorer, navigate to Avast folder in Program Files.
Right click on Avast ".exe" file, click "Create shortcut":

http://209.85.48.8/228/109/upload/p4481405.gif
Copy that shortcut, go back to Start menu.
Right click on avast! Free Antivirus, click "Paste".
You'll see Avast shortcut recreated replacing (empty) entry.

Alternatively, you can paste the shortcut in:

(XP) - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Avast
(Vista/7) - C:\Program Data\Start Menu\Programs\Avast

Let me know how you get on in your next reply.

Hello ThankYou

Is there anything else you recommend for my system? Provided you are no longer having any problems we can remove our tools in the steps below:

Please Uninstall Combofix

Click on "Start" and then on "Run".
Now type combofix /uninstall in the run box and click "OK". Please note the space between the "x" and the "/Uninstall", it needs to be there.

Please perform the following cleanup procedure

Double click on the OTM.exe icon on your desktop to run the program.
Once OTM has opened, click on the "CleanUp!" button.
Follow any prompts that you receive.

Removal of Tools

You no longer need SystemLook, Unhide, Security Check, aswMBR or TDSSKiller. Please delete them from your machine.

Please re-enable Spybot Teatimer

Launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
On the left hand side, click "Tools", then click on the "Resident" icon in the list.
Check the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active" box.
Click the "System Startup" icon in the List.
Check the "TeaTimer" box and "OK" any prompts.
If Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted.
Exit Spybot S&D when done.

Once you have completed the above steps you should be good to go! If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask.

Once complete, remember to re-engage your resident security before going online.
