I am in over my head

This morning my DHs computer (a state-of-the art Gateway, back in 2002!) announced he had 38 various "infections" and that if he purchased "Security Sphere 2012" all would be well.

I have run Spybot twice, McAfee once, and it is still there.

I know I am supposed to include various technical thingies and doodads to this, but I don't even understand what you are asking for, let alone how to do what you want. (my 27-year-old son says I have no business using a computer if I insist on being this illiterate)

ANY suggestions that someone not nearly as bright as you can follow?
