Spyquake

I have been badgered by spyquake and some other fine annoyances!
I did some research in the forums and followed the steps that were explained in one of the threads. Basically here's what i did in safe mode:
- Ran Brute Force Uninstaller (selecting alcanshorty.bfu)
- Ran Hoster.exe and restored the original windows hosts
- Complete system scan with ewido.
After all this, the pc seems to be working alot faster. But occasionally i still get pop ups and an annoying yellow shield with exclamation mark is still showing up on my taskbar.

I run windows xp pro with sp2

Hello and welcome to the forum. If you still need help, follow these directions.
1) For your information, neither of the methods you used will remove Smitfraud.

2) Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

3) Follow the directions in this link: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=4015
then post the three logs at the end of the instructions in this same topic. I will be notified and check to see if there is more to do as soon as possible after that.

4) Spybot: follow the directions to save the log as instructions, do not post that log unless a helper requests it.

Thanks for returning the information, You have placed MSConfig in Selective Startup mode. I can't tell if you are clean. I must see the HJT log in Normal Mode. Please make the change and scan for the HJT log, no need to reboot. Then you can return to Selective Startup. Post that HJT log.

I want to ask about this Windows Media Player item:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = wmplayer.exedid you put that there? What can you tell me about why that is there.

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Let's remove that line like this:
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = wmplayer.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

If all is running well, you are good to go...tashi:) will close your topic in a day or so. You can keep that cute little trash can to dump your junk:D:

Oh my! it's back. After taking all the above steps, the machine ran fine for a couple of days. I repeated all the steps. Machine ran fine until earlier today: the nasty thing popped up again, taking me to this website where i can buy spyware removal software and blablabla. Norton tells me it detected Winfixer, but is it really Norton? Or is it the bug pretending to be Norton? All 'work' was done this monday, hadn't used the pc until this morning. Let me know if i need to start over.

Please do the following:

Most probably you are dealing with the latest version of Vundo, which targets HijackThis so HijackThis doesn't show its related entries in a log.
Please navigate to your HijackThis folder. Rename your hijackthis.exe to analyse.exe
Reboot.
Then doubleclick analyse.exe and post the log from it in your next reply as well (this will be a HijackThis log of course)

Hello,

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop. Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it. Click the Scan for Vundo button. Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button. You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo. When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK. Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

thx for your prompt reply!
I did as told, i kept getting the messsage about one not being able to be removed. Tried up to six times to rescan at start up and tried in safe mode. The message keeps popping up:
"can not remove vtsqp.dll"
and each scan this one shows up plus pqstv.ini
Any suggestions?

* Save it to the Desktop
* Close all running programs (including your Internet Browser)
* Double-click VirtumundoBeGone.exe on the Desktop
* Follow the directions as indicated

This program may generate a "Blue Screen of Death" which is an expected/necessary part of the process.
Do not be concerned.
Just reboot if your system "jams".

To confirm successful deletion, and determine if there are any additional problems, please post the VirtumundoBeGone log VBG.txt. It is found on the Desktop. Also post a new HijackThis log and let me know how your computer is running now. :)

I see Viewpoint installed.
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now, if you did not install it. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

* Viewpoint
* Viewpoint Manager
* Viewpoint Media Player

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post the contents of the Panda scan report in your next reply together with a fresh HijackThis log.

Panda showed only cookies, and your log looks clean. My only concern is that you seem to be running 2 AntiVirus programs, Norton and McAfee. Please make sure you disable one of them to reduce the chances of system instability. You're also wasting system resources and weakening the protection by running them both.

Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.

It is very important to maintain your Firewall.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

About the anti virus software: i only run Norton. I uninstalled mcafee a long time ago but this random residual things keep showing. Any suggestions on that?
