Internet Explorer crashes/shuts down

I keep receiving the following error: "Internet Explorer has encounted an error and will close, we are sorry for the inconvience, etc." and after clicking this box IE closes.

The error signature report show the following:

AppName: iexplore.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180
ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0
Offset: 01971d00 (or) 01c5ec68 (or) 01c63a30

Based on the IE error report contents, could an "appcompat.txt" file have something to do with this error.

I have recently installed Spybot but the error still occurs. I use Norton antivirus but it has not corrected the situation either.

Any ideas on what could be causing this and/or ways to fix the problem would be greatly appreciated.
