Last night I received two emails that I'm 90% sure have been spoofed. The email claims to originate from the RIAA for "copyright infringement". The email says that my IP address has been identified as distributing copyrighted material. The thing is, I don't share music files. The email had an attachment and said I needed to resolve the matter w/in 14 days. Something about the message doesn't seem right.

Is there any recent news of criminals posing as RIAA to infect computers?

Hello computer_user,

Search engines show, "Spoofed RIAA Notification Includes Trojan"

Hope you did not open the attachment. :)

Thank you. I didn't open the attachments but I did save the messages so that I could forward them to the RIAA. I'm surprised there wasn't more buzz about this fake email. I don't know the difference between trojans and viruses, but now I know that whatever was sent to me is definitely bad.

Hi there,

I'm surprised there wasn't more buzz about this fake email.

There is a fair amount but spam is never ending and there's a lot of it, not just in emails but forum spam in profiles and posts.

With emails the subject is often pertinent to current events, for instance at this time the IRS (tax time), and the RIAA which is in the news again because of SOPA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_Online_Piracy_Act).

Glad you didn't open the attachment. :bigthumb:
