View Full Version : Malware problems: Smitfraud-C.gp & W3i.IQ5.fraud

jimjul9804
2012-02-19, 06:07
Have scanned and spybot search & destroy found both problems on my PC. Trying to get it removed for weeks now. Took PC to Office Depot and they did a scan to see what the problem was and said it was malware. Tried Malwarebytes and no luck. I've attached the attach.txt file from the dds report and the dds report below.

Thanks,
Julie

Hi and welcome to Safer-Networking, sorry for any delay in answering your request for help, the forum is really busy.
My name is Diver79, and I will be helping you with your malware problems.

Before we start please note the following important guidelines.

The instructions given are for THIS computer only! Using these instructions on a different computer, can make it inoperable!
Please DO NOT run any other software or scans whilst I am helping you.

Note: If you haven't done so already, please ensure you have read the following article. "BEFORE You POST"(Please read this Procedure Before Requesting Assistance) (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288) where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.
Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.
How do I backup my files and folders in XP? (http://www.winxptutor.com/ntbackup.htm)

Looking into your logs now. Will post instructions soon...

Hi jimjul9804,

Re: Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010
Can you tell me how this came to be installed on your computer?

Looking into your logs, will post instructions after I receive your reply.

I work for Dr Pepper Snapple Group and we had the option of purchasing the software at a discount for home use. I received my copy and installed it.

Since I'm not concerned about the actual computer I didn't do a backup like you said. I just wanted to save my files on my computer in case I lost them. That's all I'm concerned about and that's been done. If what we do doesn't fix it I'll probably just format the hard drive anyway and re install everything. So, now the balls in your court.

Let me correct myself........I do care about the computer and it working. This computer was built from scratch and we don't have the disk for the operating system. If I end up reformating the hard drive I will have to go purchase an operating system. So, if I can save the computer I would rather do that than go purchase the operating system. Hope that makes better sense.

With the AVscan set to Quick Scan, click the Scan button.
(Please be patient whilst your computer is scanned.)
After a while when the scan reports "Scan finished successfully", click Save log & save the log to your desktop.
Click OK > Exit.
Note: Do not attempt to fix anything at this stage!
Two files will be created, aswMBR.txt & a file named MBR.dat.
MBR.dat is a backup of the MBR(master boot record), do not delete it..
I strongly suggest you keep a copy of this backup stored on an external device.
Copy & Paste the contents of aswMBR.txt into your next reply.

TDSSKiller
Please download TDSSKiller.exe (http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop.
Right click on TDSSKiller.exe and select Run as Administrator to launch it.
Click on Start Scan, the scan will run.
When the scan has finished, if it finds anything please click on the drop down arrow next to Cure and select Skip
Now click on Report to open the log file created by TDSSKiller in your root directory C:\
To find the log go to Start > Computer > C:
Post the contents of that log in your next reply please.
DO NOT TRY TO FIX ANYTHING AT THIS POINT

I don't remember the administrator password to my computer but it also shows me as the administrator. I ran the scan under that profile.

Hi Julie,

don't remember the administrator password to my computer but it also shows me as the administrator. I ran the scan under that profile. My apologies, those instructions relate to Windows 7 which you do not have.

Both scans came back clear, so it does not look like you have a rootkit.

Apart from the Spybot scan have you had any other symptoms of infection (search redirects etc.)?

Lets see what OTL finds.

OTL Scan

Download OTL (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe) to your desktop.
Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed to let it run uninterrupted.
When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

In answer to your question about finding anything with any other scans other than Spybot Search & Destroy......yes. When I took my computer to the local Office Depot store they did a scan and also found Malware. Didn't say what the exact file was, (I had to pay 150 bucks to find out that information) but they did show me where it said Malware under the Security part of the scan.

Here are the logs you requested......

Hi jimjul9804

The OTL scan showed some unwanted Conduit and Zynga toolbar and search related items.

Run the fix below and then we will use an online scanner to see if it can find an infection.

Run OTL Script
We need to run an OTL Fix

Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
Copy and Paste the following code into the http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/OTL/customFix.png textbox. Do not include the word Code

ESET Online Scanner:
Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your Anti-Virus.

Disable Antivirus
Start Norton Internet Security.
In the left pane, click Status & Settings.
Click Security.
Click Turn off.

Please go here (http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/run) to run the scan.

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox. Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk173/Dakeyras_album2/EOLS2.gif
When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:

Scan for potentially unwanted applications
Scan for potentially unsafe applications
Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
Now click on: http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk173/Dakeyras_album2/EOLS3.gif
The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
Now click on: http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk173/Dakeyras_album2/EOLS4.gif
Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

The program looks to be stalled out. The light on the computer isn't blinking like its working and the program says "killing process......Do not interrupt" is this normal?

If its been running for more than 20 minutes without responding you may have to manually power off the machine by holding in the power button for 5-10 seconds.
If it produces the log file when you restart then proceed with the online scan.
If it does not, try disabling norton and running the fix again.
Let me know how you get on.

OTL fix didn't work.
Had to manually turn off the computer by pressing the power button. Then when I restarted it didn't produce a log. Tried disabling Norton and it did the same thing.
I went ahead and ran the ESET Online Scanner, here is the log.txt from that.

Hi jimjul9804,

There doesnt appear to be an infection on the computer. Looks like the Home Depot guys may have removed it.

Please run SecurityCheck to scan your System for vulnerable programs.

Security Check

Please download Security Check by screen317 from one of the links below:
Link 1 (http://screen317.spywareinfoforum.org/SecurityCheck.exe)
Link 2 (http://screen317.changelog.fr/SecurityCheck.exe)
Save it to your Desktop.
Right click SecurityCheck.exe And select " Run as administrator " , then follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt
Please post the contents of that document.

It's still running very slow.....so I don't see how something couldn't be wrong with it.

Here's the log you requested.
I don't know if this matters or not but I usually run Google Chrome and not Explorer or Firefox. Just an FYI.

Is it only slow when you are browsing the web, or is the computer slow in general?

As far as I can see there is no active infection on this machine. Please describe the problem in more detail and I will see if there is anything else I can do to help.

Well, it was slow browsing the web, browsing and playing games on Facebook, Photoshop program would lock up constantly too. When you clicked on a link it took a few minutes to go to the page and then when you got there you couldn't scroll down the page for another minute or two even when the page was loaded. It just simply bogged out with everything you did. It seems to boot up now very slow, much, much slower than before. Very frustrating.

I do appreciate your help with this. I understand if you have done all you can do. If nothing else can be done then I'll have to end up purchasing another operating system and reformating the hard drive, start from scratch.

Thats all I know to do at this point. I just figured I would give you guys a try because I've had two other instances in the past where the issues I had were fixed.

Thanks,
Julie

Hi Julie,

Lets try System File Checker to see if the infection corrupted any of Window's system files.

Click on the Start button and select Run.
Type cmd and press OK.
At the command prompt type the following command and press Enter.
sfc /scannow]
Allow the scan to complete, it may take a while.
Reboot the PC and let me know if there is any change in its performance.

When I started the scan it came up with a window labeled "Windows File Protection".....this is what it said in the window......

Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache. Insert your Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD now.

The problem is, I don't have that CD. Any suggestions?

Hi Julie,

I had hoped it wouldnt do that.

I will ask my colleagues what the best course of action is now.

I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Hi Julie,

I think Malwarebyte's real-time protection was interfering with the OTL fix. I'd like to run the fix again with real-time protection disabled.

Once the fix has completed we will run some Hard drive maintenance to look for errors on the hard disk (These checks may take some time to complete).

Disable MBAM Real-Time protection
Right-click on the MBAM icon in the System Tray and uncheck Enable Protection.
When asked, "Are you sure you want to disable the MBAM Protection Module?", click Yes.
Right-click on the MBAM icon again and then uncheck Start with Windows.
Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Run OTL Script
Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
Copy and Paste the following code into the http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/OTL/customFix.png textbox. Do not include the word Code
