Any idea why?

I know I have a version of Vundo/Virtumonde/whateveryacallit - when I run McAfee's scan, I can see the files role by under a directory labeled "HKU" that I can't find with a Windows Explorer search, or with anything else. McAfee speeds right past these files (mortgage stuff, executables, porn stuff, windows "rescue" stuff ... the usual) ... and reports no infected files found.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Welcome
Check the properties of this file
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\IfxWlxEN.dll
what information do you see ?
I assume it belongs to Infineon Technologies ?
Close hijackthis if open, right click on it and choose rename, rename it to
C:\HJT.exe then run it and post another log.

Also, saw a folder for Infineon Tech when I went to find my HJT program file ... but I left it alone.

Here's the new HJT log. (And THANKS, LRJ, for your help!)

OK.

This is a brand new computer - just a couple of weeks old. When it started to slow down, I ran scans on it (Spybot, Adaware, McAfee) and nothing turned up, but I did see, while watching the file names flash by during the McAfee scan, that some files I recalled from the Vundo infection on our OLD computer were showing up. That is, they were flashing by in the McAfee window that shows the files as they are being scanned.

Some of the files I noted (they ran by too fast to write them down, mostly) included .exe, .com, and .net files, mostly in HKU directories, with names like "winfixer.exe," and various mortgage and porn, and casino related names.

None of the software we ran, including McAfee, actually identified any infection, though.

I downloaded and ran Vundofix, which worked well in previous infections.

The first two times I ran Vundofix (as a task) it didn't close and reopen as it usually would (that's why I stated that in my original post) but since then, it seems to function just fine, but does NOT detect any infection.

So I thought there was some way Vundo might be thwarting Vundofix, but that's apparently not it - Vundofix is running fine, but detects nothing.

Sort of puzzling, because when I run McAfee and watch the file names fly by during the scan, toward the end, after 40K+ files have been scanned, those HKU directories with all the porn/casino/mortgage stuff and the winfixer files will zoom past, then McAfee says "no infection found."

*************

Just now, when I opened Windows Explorer to look for the .dll file you identified, but before I could actually do anything, McAfee popped up a "Registry Change Detected" warning that says:
McAfee has detected a potentially unauthorized change to your computer.

Details
SystemGuard Name: Internet Explorer ShellBrowser
Change: Registry Created

More Info
SystemGuard Description: Monitors changes made to your Internet Explorer ShellBrowser instance. The Internet Explorer ShellBrowser contains information and settings about an instance of Internet Explorer. If these settings are changed or a new ShellBrowser is added, this ShellBrowser can take full control of Internet Explorer, adding features such as toolbars, menus, and buttons.

Process: C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe
Process Name: Windows Explorer
Process Publisher: Microsoft Corporation
Affected Items: C:\WINDOWS\system32\browseui.dll, HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-724090883-332116410-1791525782-1005\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\ShellBrowser\{01E04581-4EEE-11D0-BFE9-00AA005B4383}, HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{01E04581-4EEE-11D0-BFE9-00AA005B4383}\InProcServer32\

If you did not expect this change, McAfee recommends that you block it. If you expected this change, allow it.

***************

I wasn't expecting the registry change, so I blocked it. Don't know if it's relevant to all this or not! (As I've been doing this search for the IfxWlxEN.dll file, each time I click to open Windows Explorer or to do a search, that McAfee notice pops up to tell me it's blocked a registry change!!!!)

Here's the information from right-clicking on the IfxWlxEN.dll file:

I think your confusing what mcafee is looking for with whats detected
Im not familur with the program, for example when checking for problems with SpyBot the items you see in the bot checks is exactly that what SSD is looking for not whats on the pc.

I believe the item you mentioned that mcafee alerted to should have been alowed. You should read its help file and ask questions in there forums, if they have one...

Thanks for the information on that file, leave it be..

If your not experiancing lots of popups especialy from Winfixer your not infected with vundo

McAfee didn't alert to it ... it just flashes the files it's scanning as it goes. It was scanning files, including winfixer, that don't belong there ...

thanks for your efforts; sorry to have taken your time.

Think Prevention: Put in place a good hosts file

To help avoid reinfection see "So how did I get infected in the first place?"
