View Full Version : Virus or spyware on IE? How to fully remove?
Hi fellow experts, I refer to link http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=6169.
I too got infected by virus/spyware recently when I use IE. After using Spybot, I have managed to clean up the infections (I hope so).
However, it appears there are some persistent spyware files still active in my windows/system32 directory. In addition, my anti-virus software (AVG) occasionally catches virus from the windows/temp directory (eg. files called win1.tmp etc). This is as a result of the same trojan from hxxp://d.mettere.net/a412/a571...php that infected my pc.
I am confused because AVG keeps telling me that I'm infected with viruses but I thought they are spywares.
Anyway, can someone please help me to fully clean these infections as AVG & Spybot can't seem to fully get my pc back to it's original virus/spyware free state.

Welcome to the forum, it is indeed a Vundo trojan and it can be hard to get rid of, follow the directions.
We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.
Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.
Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
Turn your computer back on.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Get your Java program updated, that may well be the reason you are infected?

I have taken the neccesary actions according to your recommendations.
Vundofix report stated no infection. However, Hijack This log remains unchanged. I have uninstalled my old Java program & updated to the latest version.
For your information, after trying the Vundo fix, I received pop-ups from a website "sysprotect.com" telling me that my system is not well protected & requested that I update some files or install a program from their web site. I'm also getting pop-ups from hxxp://www.winantivirus.com/pages/scanner/?p=15&j=1&ex=1&ax=1&h=10&aid=nm_ec_wav_r3. Of course I didn't as this is obviously a result of virus infection.
I have attached the reports & logs for your further review. Is there anything more I should do?

Thanks for checking with me, there is no need to highlight items in the HJT log, my scanner does that for me. As I indicated, the trojan can be hard to remove. For your information, it is hard to start with and now the hackers cause it to have a random name or CLSID and the tool does not recognize it. It is difficult for Atribune to enter all of the random numbers, so he has made a way that we can do that and hopefully that will work.
You also scanned with an out of date version of Java, please update your Java version. I just had one of these where the member ran the scan the three times exactly the same and it removed the worm on the third try? Remove old versions of Java and update to the newest and then read those instructions very carefully and try again. I see Windows Defender running in the HJT log, did you turn it off as requested before running VundoFix? The instructions must be followed exactly, the removal is hard enough without an instruction not being followed. It only gets more difficult from here.
Once you have done the above and you are positive it was done correctly, then you may try this:

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
You will receive a message saying Vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK.
When VundoFix re-opens, click Scan for Vundo button.
Once the scan is complete, right-click inside the listbox (white box) and click Add more files
Copy & paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxes:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnll.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnlk.dll
Click Add Files and click Close Window.
Click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
Turn your computer back on.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a fresh HiJackThis log.

This time, I have removed the old version of Java and installed the new update. Also, I've turned off Windows Defender accordingly. Then, I ran the VundoFix program & deleted the files as instructed.

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmnlk - C:\WINDOWS\
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winhkz32 - winhkz32.dll (file missing)
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Restart the computer and post a last HJT log, let me know how you are running now.
The first couple of boots may be a little slow until Windows repopulates Prefetch.

I made an error by fixing the below item shown on the Hijack This log.
O20 - Winlogon Notify: igfxcui - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\igfxsrvc.dll
I realised that this relates to Intel Graphics so I have now restored this item only.

Thanks for returning the information, your HJT log is clean, you can rename HJT from analyse.exe to HijackThis.exe if you wish.
Were you able to return this item from backups ok? That does indeed deal with your Intel(R) integrated graphics controller.
I do not see it in this last log you posted, but you can return it from backups like this: HJT > Open the Misc Tools section > Backups > check just the item you need to restore and click on the Restore button.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Yes I have restored the Intel graphics file. Thanks for providing me the step by step instruction.
For the moment, it appears my pc is in good condition. Will have to monitor closely the next few days.
