Problem with Removing Altnet CLSID

Hi - anybody got any ideas as I'm fresh out.
I've got a little experience at removing malware, but this one has me beaten. Spybot shows an Altnet registry key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{B715651-A76C-4545-9D5B-A4E1D02C7AEC}

but I can't remove it - have tried using Safe Mode, run HJT (log below) and even run Registry Editor from Bart PE, but to no avail. One of the subkeys is preventing the removal of the key and I can't read the key or set any permissions on that one, although I can set the ones on the key above.

One other thing and this makes me think there is something very wrong with one of the hives - if i run anything that searches the registry then the computer reboots and get Windows has recovered from serious error message.

Welcome to the forum, I can't say off the top of my head but I know Altnet can be a bear to get rid of. If I remember correctly ewido and/or Ad-aware remove it. I am more concerned by what I can see in your log. I can not scan the log because you have cut off the first four lines. I can however see this stuff manually:

If you want some help with this, fix the position of HJT.exe and post a complete log. Once I can scan it I will have a better idea what we are up against.

Don't surprise me none, you had a lot of infection on this computer just from what I showed you earlier. Looks like you removed the ActiveX junk I posted earlier, let's do this:
This log is not running in safe mode? Make sure all logs are in Normal Mode with everything enabled in MSConfig unless I request otherwise.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\DOCUMENT & SETTINGS~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\ <<< delete the contents of that folder [/COLOR (not the folder)

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log. Once that log has been posted, then follow these directions:

Download ewido anti-spyware from HERE (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) and save that file to your desktop.
[i]This is a 30 day trial of the program
Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"
Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
[color=#FF0000]IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the ewido report scan.


Post the ewido scan results as soon as you have them and let me know how the computer is running now.

Is the system crashing when you are running ewido? You have not removed the junk with ewido, "No action taken" Wait, I see you said you did quarantine the stuff. I see nothing that could not be deleted, wait a couple of days and delete the contents of that quarantine folder.
I would like to see a clean ewido log, don't bother running the registry part, I will give you a program to do that before we finish. Having many friends and associates in the UK, I certainly understand the time difference. Not a good idea to work on your computer when you are tired.

Hi - unloaded Panda and Spyware Doctor to free up some resources, the system is currently somewhat short of memory (to be rectified tomorrow), so it is running somewhat slow. That said, it is running in a much more spritely manner than previously.

Re-ran ewido, which did not show any further problems (outside of the registry) - tried the registry scan again, got further through the scan then rebooted.

The computer does come up with "Windows has recovered from a serious error" when booting into normal mode some of the time, not every reboot but a significant number of them.

There is only the one user account on the pc (apart from the hidden windows administrator account) guest service is disabled.

I havent updated the Java yet as its currently disconnected from the network.

Oh and Spybot S&D is still showing the Altnet key, whose subkey is still protected (in regedit)

Let me bounce a few thoughts off of you. You are right about memory, that is the cheapest way to upgrade a system, the more the better.

What happens is a program that you have run removes the junk but does not get it all. Normally what is left can cause no problems since most of it is gone, but another program like Spybot picks up on the fact it is there. It is there and can cause you no problems. The issues you are having getting ewido to scan seems to indicate a need to clean the registry. I normally do this with CCleaner but I believe in your case a good free registry cleaner would work best. It is so important that you follow the directions to back up the registry before working in the event of an error. I will post the backup instructions, the link to the free registry cleaner and instructions for using it. Everyone I have posted this for has said it is very easy to understand and use.

I should say that I see no evidence of malware in this last HJT log you posted. I also saw the ewido report you posted: Clean

Before I post it, I will post this link: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/ I see a lot of programs you probably do not have to start everytime you boot up. Look at these items in your HJT log:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run <<< if you do not need to have it running everytime (do not turn off security programs) consider using MSConfig to turn it off and start it manually from "All Programs" when you do need to start it. This should help some with resources.

Instructions for backing up before cleaning or editing the registry:
Backup your Registry...
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run...)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL _________________________________________

Instructions for using:
I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder,
open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program.
Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK.
When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked
and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within
the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything
it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly,
control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything).
In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click
any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen.
Reboot When done.

I checked with the resident expert at the forum, and this is what he suggested.

Because of the information you provided he suggests that you have bigger problems that just an Altnet key. Suggests you try:
