View Full Version : Unsure if I have virus/malware/spam

What is 'yepp@musiccity'? I was looking in my Temporary Internet Files and saw this. To prevent people from accidently clicking the link that it shows when I right click to view properties, I've uploaded a screenshot. I'm unsure if this 'yepp@musiccity' is a form of spam or malware. I'm not even gonna bother checking the site out just in case it is malware.

I have Spybot S&D, Bitdefender Total Security 2012, and an expired copy of Webroot Spy Sweeper (which still blocks threats). None of them report this file. I'm just curious as to what it is and if it should be removed. I can't actually right click to delete because it doesn't send it to Recycle Bin.

Below is the DDS log report. Not sure if I was supposed to disable my anti-virus programs while running it or not.

Also, sorry if I posted this in the wrong section of the forums.

Hello Luney Loz :),

Welcome to Safer Networking. I am Jack&Jill, and I will be helping you out.

Before we go further, there are a few things that I would like to make clear so that we are share the same understanding.

Please observe and follow these Forum Rules (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288).
Any advice is for your computer only and is taken at your own risk. Fixes sometimes will cause unexpected results, but I will do my best to assist you.
Please read the instructions carefully and follow them closely, in the order they are presented to you.
If you have any doubts or problems during the fix, please stop and ask.
All the tools that I will ask you to download and use are safe. Please allow if prompted by any of your security softwares.
Do not use or run any malware cleaning tools without supervision as they may cause more harm if improperly used.
Refrain from installing any new programs except those that I request during the fix to prevent interference to my diagnosis of the problem.
Lack of malware symptoms does not mean your computer is clean. Stick to this topic until I give the All Clear.
If you do not reply within 3 days, this topic will be closed.
If you are agreeable to the above, then everything should go smoothly :) . We may begin.

--------------------

What do you use the computer for?

--------------------

Remove P2P software

IMPORTANT: I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Pando Media Booster

Please read the Guidelines for P2P Programs (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282) where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.
Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the P2P program(s) listed above (in red).
Please remove them before we continue with fixing your computer.

Please run DDS and post both logs.

--------------------

Check for additional security risks

Please download CKScanner© by askey127 and save to your desktop. Click here. (http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/CKScanner.exe)
Double click on CKScanner.exe and click Search For Files.
After a very short time, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File. You will be prompted, click OK.
Post the contents of ckfiles.txt in your reply, it is located on your desktop.
Please run the program only once.

--------------------

Please post back:
1. the answer to my question on the computer
2. new DDS logs
3. CKScanner result

Hi, the computer is for home use only. It's not a business computer. I uninstalled Pando Media Booster.

Hello Luney Loz :),

You are having more than one antispyware programs. Having more is not better as they might slow down the computer and conflict. I suggest you uninstall Spy Sweeper and disable Windows Defender.

There is nothing to worry about on yepp@musiccity. Most likely it is related to your Samsung Kies.

Are you having any problems? If the following scan return clean and if you do not experience any problems, we are done.

--------------------

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM)© from Malwarebytes and save it to your desktop. Click here. (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php)

Run MBAM

Double click on mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end of installation, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
MBAM will now check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. If you can't update it, select the Update tab. Under Update mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
Upon completion of update and loading, select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
Check (tick) all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
After it has removed the items, a log in Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

If asked to restart the computer, please do so. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. If you receive an (Error Loading) error on reboot, please reboot a second time. It is normal for this error to occur once and does not need to be reported unless it returns on future reboots.

--------------------

Please post back:
1. if you have problems
2. MBAM result

Hi,

I'm a bit worried about uninstalling SpySweeper. Even though it's an expired copy, it still blocks threats that BitDefender doesn't pick up. It blocked 007guard from connecting last night. That malware was on my computer a few months ago. Hopefully it hasn't come back.

I hopefully disabled Windows Defender. Had to Google how to disable it as I had no idea how to do it.

Ah I see. I was unsure if it was a virus or not. I had checked my laptop for this file too but it wasn't listed. This destop computer is the only one with my Samsung Kies installed on it.

I used to have Malwarebytes on my desktop computer but when I bought BitDefender Total, it forced me to uninstall Malwarebytes before I could install BitDefender. Thankfully today when I installed Malwarebytes, BitDefender didn't force me to uninstall it.

Hello Luney Loz :),

Your logs are clean so far.

What Spy Sweeper is detecting could be Spybot's immunization on the hosts file. See this (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic117358.html).

An expired security program will not be able to function fully and protect against newer threats. Better to uninstall Spy Sweeper. I will have some security recommendations for you later.

Once you are done with that, please post a new DDS log for me to confirm about the status of both Windows Defender and Spy Sweeper.

Hi,

Oh I see. One of those sites connected once because I saw all these website links in my Windows Hosts file. Lucky one of the tech people in Spybot forums helped me.

I uninstalled SpySweeper as you said. If you see any other anti-spyware programs in the logs and you want me to uninstall them, I will. I have had a few on here before. The only ones I have on here now (that I know of) are Bitdefender, Spybot, and Malwarebytes. I hope they're ok to keep.

Hello Luney Loz :),

For clarification, are you running MBAM free version or the Pro version? If you are running the Pro version, you need to choose between disabling the real time protection of Spybot or MBAM. The same principle as I explained earlier.

If you have no more problems, I guess we are done.

--------------------

Congratulations, you are All Clear to go. Glad to hear everything is good and running :). If you have any more problems, please let me know.

Now we need to clear out the programs we have been using to clean up your computer. They are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.

Delete the CKscanner file on your desktop.
Delete any logs on the desktop.

Some tips to help you stay clean and safe:

1. Keep your Windows up to date. Enable Automatic Updates for Windows 7 (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Turn-automatic-updating-on-or-off) to always update the latest security patches from Microsoft, or you can download from the Microsoft website. Otherwise, your computer will be vulnerable to new exploits or malwares.

2. Update your Antivirus program regularly, it is a must for constant protection against viruses. Please keep only one AV installed.

3. Install Web of Trust (WOT). WOT (http://www.mywot.com/) keeps you from dangerous websites with warnings and blockings.

4. Protect your computer from removable or USB drive infections with MCShield (http://amf.mycity.rs/programs/mc/mcshield/), an effective method to prevent malware from spreading.

5. Keep all your softwares updated. Visit Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector/) to find out if any updates required.

Hi,

I'm running the free version of Malwarebytes but it had an option to try the Pro version for 14 days or so. I'm not sure how to cancel the trial. I might just uninstall Malwarebyes and re-install to see if that works.

I deleted the programs and logs you told me to delete. I also installed 'WOT' and 'MCShield'.

Thank you very much for your help. I appreciate it. :-)

Actually, there might be a problem with my Hosts file now. Sorry for the double post. I can't see an edit button.

When I open my Hosts file under 'C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc', all it shows is some 'റ' icon thing. Is there a problem with that? Normally it has some IP addy or something.

Hello Luney Loz :),

You are welcome.

For the host file, it could be the impact of Spy Sweeper's removal. Try the Spybot Immunization to see if it works, or you could give MVPS Hosts (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) a shot.

Hi,

Is it possible for me to change the Host file back so it has the below stuff written? I think that's what's supposed to be in it.

The last time I ran Spybot Immunize, I got infected with 007guard. Spysweeper had popped up, warning me of all these sites trying to open. They sounded like sites that would have virus'. Due to that, I'm worried that if I run Spybot Immunize, my computer will get infected again.

I remember someone here helping me to remove all those links that were in my Hosts file so that it would have the default Hosts info thing.

# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

Hello Luney Loz :),

The last time I ran Spybot Immunize, I got infected with 007guard. Spysweeper had popped up, warning me of all these sites trying to open. They sounded like sites that would have virus'. Due to that, I'm worried that if I run Spybot Immunize, my computer will get infected again. Spybot's Immunize actually put in entries that will prevent access to bad sites.
As I have explained here (http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=426537&postcount=8), Spy Sweeper sort of falsely detected the Immunization (example of conflict), but actually there is nothing wrong. There is no infection.

When you described there is some problem with the hosts file, I suspected that it could be Spy Sweeper that caused it, either by its removal or the real time protection prior to the removal that prevented Spybot from creating the Immunization. That is why I suggested you Immunize or try the MVPS hosts. Both are safe and is a method of protection against going to malicious sites.

To reset the hosts file, you could visit the following Microsoft support page and click on the Fix It button or you can do it manually as outlined by the article.

How do I reset the hosts file back to the default? (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034)
