jphil
2006-08-14, 04:50
I've tried everything to get newdotnet off, even downloaded their removal tool onto a floppy, and S & D fixes it every time, but always comes back. My internet connection is slow slow, even off line is slow. Did an e-trust on-line virus scan and shows no virus. Thanks for your help! jphil

Welcome to the forum, Since you said you tried the removal tool, I have to make sure you mean this one:
http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html and you have tried all of the methods they give you. Look it over to be sure.

Do you own this program: Webroot\Spy Sweeper

1) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs and uninstall NewDotNet, VVSN, SaveNow adware, and any other program you know should not be there. If you are unsure, let me know and I will look.

2) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [New.net Startup] rundll32 C:\PROGRA~1\NEWDOT~1\NEWDOT~2.DLL,ClientStartup -s
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VVSN] C:\Program Files\VVSN\VVSN.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\NEWDOT~1\ <<< delete that folder

C:\Program Files\VVSN\ <<< delete that folder

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log and let me know how your computer is running now.

Thanks

jphil

Thanks for quick reply! That is the removal tool I used, and I did all they suggested. I do have Webroot's Spysweeper.
Nothing I could remove using add/remove, there never has been Newdot or VVSN in that area that I could remove.
I had previously made the files and folders visible
Ran the Hijack scan and checked and fixed the 4 items
Cannot find them in c:\programfiles, only finds with a search were not in the program files, and they were in ref. to my attempts to delete (spybot files, recoveries, hijack scans, etc)
Ran the ATF cleaner
Restarted, my log is below. Sorry to say all is still running slow. Internet keeps directing me to the cannot find server page, but on second try it usually goes thru, but all tries are still incredibly slow!!
Thank you again for all your help!

Did you try to remove the items in the HJT log as posted? It may be that SpySweeper is blocking the fix, turn it off and use HJT again:
Open the program
On the left, click: Options, then > Program Options
Uncheck: Load at windows startup
Again on the left click: Shields and uncheck all items there.
Uncheck: Home Page Shield
Uncheck: Automatically restore default without notification

Now use HJT to remove these lines:
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [New.net Startup] rundll32 C:\PROGRA~1\NEWDOT~1\NEWDOT~2.DLL,ClientStartup -s
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VVSN] C:\Program Files\VVSN\VVSN.exe

Restart the computer and see if they are gone.

If not, then look at where we are being told they are located.
C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\NEWDOT~1\
C:\Program Files\VVSN\
If they are not there, they are someplace. Use search companion and search for both, be patient, sometimes it takes a while for them to be found if they are running from a TIF, Temp or Prefetch files. When you have that information, post it for me.

Follow these instructions, make sure you run ewido in safe mode and make sure you delete what it locates unless you know it not to be bad. I will look and advise you then.
First download ewido anti-spyware from HERE (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"
Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the ewido report scan.

Post the ewido scan results, a new HJT log and any feedback you think will help.

Keep in mind, malware is not the only thing that can slow a computer, this information will help you look at other possible reason for it.

It looks like they're both gone! I unchecked everything you said in Spysweeper and turned it off, ran HJT and they are not there anymore! Also did msconfig and looked at startup, and they are at the bottom, but unchecked. Are they totally out of the registry now, too?
I will do these other things if you think I need to, but it looks like my internet and everything else is back to running fast. Let me know if you think I should do anything else (besides turning on Spysweeper), or if I should post another HJT log. I really really appreciate all your help!

I spoke too soon! I just thought I was going to get more sleep tonight! I turned spysweeper back on and did restart, and the error msg came back (error loading.....), everything slowed back down. Did a HJT and they were back on that, too, so turned off spysweeper and all shields and deleted items in a new HJT, and it is working better. Obviously they will come back if I turn on spysweeper again. I usually have all shields turned on, does one of them need to be modified? Sorry! I won't do ANYTHING til I hear from you again!

I am puzzled now myself, sounds like somehow they are being returned from SpySweeper's memory. I do not use SpySweper and know little about the paid program. I suggest you ask technical help. I would think uninstalling and reinstalling the program should clear the memory, see what they say.
I also need to see the ewido scan report, post that please.
http://support.webroot.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=776

Please also be aware that your computer slowed down when you turned SS back on, I understand it is probably causing a problem removing this junk (and it should not) but it is also a hugh resource user, so be aware your computer is going to run slower when it is activated. I also need to see a HJT log after any changes so I can see how the change effected the log.
Keep me posted, wish I could do it for you but you would have to bring it to Clearwater, Florida:)

Thanks...Phil

All I was able to do tonight is run the ewido scan, and no infections found, so "No report Available" is their answer. There were 15 cookies/trackers they found and removed.
I will e-mail Webroot about the possible Spysweeper problem and ask about uninstalling and reinstalling it. I copied what I have quarantined in Spysweeper, maybe I shouldn't be doing a search for newdotnet and should do the NDNuninstall search. I will mess with that tomorrow night. Also here is the HJT log after I ran the ewido, with Spysweeper turned off. After I send this I will reopen Spysweeper and see if the a HJT log looks any different.
I did searches and the search for NDN didn't turn up anything unusual-they are too big to attach, I will figure something out tomorrow night. The only thing that stands out if the VSNN search had the Adobe 7 that was downloaded on my computer in January as a find. Have you heard of any problems with that? Thank you again! Hopefully I can look at the websites you provided tomorrow night!
Thanks!

I am not sure what you are saying here:
The only thing that stands out if the VSNN search had the Adobe 7 that was downloaded on my computer in January as a find. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/VVSN.exe-6144.html
That item is from WhenU and is adware, nothing to do with Adobe to my knowledge.
I will say this, I remove those items often and with a simple HJT removal. The change is being blocked and I can only think that it is SpySweeper. Normal removal proceedure is:
Shown hidden files > Check and remove the item with HJT > Navigate to the folder, which in that case is C:\Program Files\ and delete it. Reboot.

Your HJT log:
We also installed ewido, during trial you get realtime protection and it can block removal attempts also. We were, however, having the problem before we installed ewido. I would turn it off when you are attempting removal of those items:
First disable Ewido, as it might be trying to interfere...
Under 'Your security status', if the real time protection is active, deactivate it by clicking 'real time protection' until the status says 'inactive'

I also recently ran into an issue where I could not remove items not wanted as the Home Page, and it turned out a recent upgrade from Norton was causing that problem. A Norton technician actually had to have the member remove Norton, change the Home Page and reinstall Norton.

Neither of those items is in this HJT log, and it appears clean of malware:

Ok, I don't even know the order of what I have done since last night, but I have run ewido with everything else off, and was able to quarentine: HKLM\Software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run\adware.newdotnet! Still "no report available".I thought that would finish it, but that is back (as you'll see on my log) along with VVSN! And I had deleted that after turning ewido off. I did a few more searches and came up with nothing, they are either very well hidden, or I am not good at searches (and I don't like XP's search system anyway)
I am going to try to spend more time on this tomorrow night and on the weekend, I am too tired when I get on here this late.
I wouldn't be surprised if a Norton update could be behind all this, I've had problems before , but haven't checked into that either. Am going to e-mail spysweeper right now, will get back on tomorrow night or Saturday! Thanks again for your help, sorry I can't fix it still! I may throw this computer clear to Clearwater, I need a new one anyway!
Joanne

Hello Joanne, here is a little information about this garbage:
http://cexx.org/newnet.htm Here are a few possible removal methods you can try if you wish:
http://www.pchell.com/support/savenow.shtml
http://cexx.org/newnetfix2.htm

Here are instuctions for editing the registry to remove it: https://kb.iu.edu/data/alfo.html
Make sure you backup the registry first: http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq3.asp?docid=68037

Not for nothing, but this link has a shot of their EULA, and to my knowledge this has to be bypassed during the download and the download has to be agreed to.

How to use the Delete on Reboot tool

At times you may find a file that stubbornly refuses to be deleted by conventional means. HijackThis introduced, in version 1.98.2, a method to have Windows delete the file as it boots up, before the file has the chance to load. To do this follow these steps:

Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now, otherwise click on the No button to reboot later.

C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\NEWDOT~1\NEWDOT~2.DLL <<< I am still surprised you can not see that folder in the C:\Program Files\ folder? Are you sure you are looking at all folders in that folder? They may not be in order.

C:\Program Files\VVSN\VVSN.exe

Keep me posted

Thanks:)

Okay! I think you can close me out, looks like all NEWDOTNET is off my computer. I finally found that Spysweeper had both newdotnet and Vsnn checked as good as start-up items, just had to uncheck those, and delete entries from registry, (http://www.pchell.com/support/savenow.shtml) I followed all directions to the letter, altho entries in my catalogs had already been deleted and fixed, probably from one of the several fixes I had already tried, but the 2 registry item keys were still in there.
I'm posting one last HJT log in case a more evil malware was created during this past week's exorcism, I've never been so tired in my life!
You all are the best, I'm recommending you to everyone! Thank you for all the tips and articles, I know more than I ever wanted to! THANK YOU!

Hi Joanne, Thanks for returning the information about how you fixed this troublesome issue. Did SpySweeper give you the information about those items being checked as good start-ups? So everyone one can see, I also supplied her with this link:
http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/new.netfix.exe but it appears she was able to remove the junk by modifing her settings in SpySweeper and then using the http://www.pchell.com/support/savenow.shtml information to edit the stuff from her registry. Thanks again for the feedback, it may help others.

This HJT log: Scan saved at 10:26:08 PM, on 8/22/2006 looks good:bigthumb:

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

I wasn't going to mention it, but since you asked, Spysweeper did not offer the solution. They did e-mail me back and their suggested solution was to send a report (titled "Report Spyware") thru Spysweepers options, which I did, but I never heard back from them. Their e-mail requesting that is also listed as their solution, and since I never heard back, I am assuming they are done. I probably should have contacted them again, but was waiting on them to look at my report. Thanks for the added info in your last post, I appreciate everything!
