Persistant Trojans et al

This computer is literally three days old, however this house's surfing habits are far from new, or so it would seem from the crap that its been picked up alreday. I reckon i need a non-windows-firewall-firewall but for nowthe best i have is the free AOL McAffee virus scan and whatever came with windows.

Spybot gives a clean result, and adaware generally finds sumthin on startup, cleans them and then can find something else not long after but Im suspising that theres more than just the ones its finding on there, after all Ive only been on trustable sites today and seem to have generated more viruses and whatnot

Welcome to the forum, if you still need help, do this for starters.

1) Move HJT from the unsafe Temporary Internet Files. I prefer it here: C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. If you need more instructions, use these.

2) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs and uninstall PuritySCAN By OIN, OIN or OuterInfo. While you are there uninstall any program you know does not belong there. If you are unsure, let me know and I will look.

3) I need to know what this file is: C:\WINDOWS\system32\mmc.dll use one or more of these free online scans and post the results for me to view:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

Run ATF Cleaner

As far as everything else went, the s?curty and 273e1044 werent there when i went to delete them, so im assuming that HJT caught them

the notepad thing didnt show up amnything on the online scan sites u sugested, but i am also suspicious of it and any help u can provide over it will be appreciated, it is a hidden file also

I don't see that notepad item in this log, notepad is where it is supposed to be. As far as files being hidden, I gave you instructions for unhiding them earlier. Leave them unhidden until we finish. I also gave you three links to use if you need to scan a file to find out what it is. This item is still in the log, did you miss it?

How to use the Delete on Reboot tool

At times you may find a file that stubbornly refuses to be deleted by conventional means. HijackThis introduced, in version 1.98.2, a method to have Windows delete the file as it boots up, before the file has the chance to load. To do this follow these steps:

Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\upml.dll
and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now, otherwise click on the No button to reboot later.

When you reboot, use HJT to remove anything that is left.

Importantly, as soon as i restarted and came online, this popped up from McAffee
The file C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\RV93F1CW\!update-4295[1].0000 wasinfected by the Downloader-EV trojan and has been deleted
That is what McAfee is supposed to do, stop infected files and delete them. You need to see where you are or what you are doing when the infected file tried to access your computer. You need to stay away from that site.

Make sure your programs are all updated, I will give you more information to help with security as soon as we get a clean log.

*McAffee eventually decided this (the file nopt the registry entry) was a trojan but couldnt delet or quarantine it so i used HJT to try and do it on reboot and it seems to have failed so shall i try and get rid of this (the reg entry) on the next scan i do?

Thanks for the feedback, make sure you keep hidden files showing and use those online scans if you have any doubt. I am 99% sure this is a trojan but don't know if a folder has to be removed also. You are the only one in a position to find out what it is. You may also want to check all versions of notepad on the computer (search for locations) the valid application should be in the C:Windows\System32\
Here is the item, and I should say again this is the only malware I see in the log:

HJT is a process manager, if you remove the item with HJT it stops the process from running so it can be deleted. So run HJT, check and remove the item, then navigate to:

C:\DOCUMENT & SETTINGS~1\
Owner\
MYDOCUMENTS~1\
APPATC~1\ <<< this may be a bad folder, scan any file in it if you have to.
notepad.exe <<< delete this, if you delete the folder, it will go with it.

If you need a tool to delete it and HJT (delete a file on reboot) is not doing it, then download this tool: http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=320 Review the tutorial so you will know what you are doing, there are three options for deleting. Try them in order until you are successful.

Once you remove that, let's run another good scan to make sure nothing else is hiding, follow the directions.

ewido scan: (remove what it locates unless you know it is not bad)
First download ewido anti-spyware from HERE (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"
Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the ewido report scan.


Restart the computer and post the ewido scan results and a new HJT log. Let me know how the computer is running now.

That scanner didnt find a single thing so I havent bothered pasted the empty log. As far as the system stability goes, since i deleted that dll with HJT ive not been getting popups from simply opening my browser and going to google (which i tried to explain to you earlier but you told me to avoid the sites i was using, sorry i wasnt clear) so as far as im concerend ona naive level its all gravy... thanks agagin again again for your expertise!

Thanks for the feedback, I think you said the popups have stopped. You understand the google toolbar will block most popups coming from online. Make sure you have the popup blocker activated. One will get through every down and then but that is the price of being able to surf. If you get a lot of popups at one particular site, avoid the site, even take the time to email and complain, it might make them change the way they do business.

As far as I can see the HJT log you just posted: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 18:53:56, on 18/08/2006 is clean of malware.

If I did not mention it before, your Java program is out of date and it appears the auto updates is not working correctly.

See this information: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2 Update it manually, the updater has been buggy for a while, I don't know what to tell you, complain to Sun Java perhaps.

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
