View Full Version : Malaware present - can't get rid of it

Hello there. I hope you can help me. Over the last few months I've been experiencing several problems. Firstly, when I'm online some words are underlined. If I put the cursor over them the word 'text enhance' comes up and an advert appears.
Also, the computer is going very slow. I have Win 7 and the system has been very efficient and quick up until now.
Also, when I open the computer when it's in hibernation, a black screen appears with the statement that the computer won't come out of hibernation.
Also, when I'm in desktop and I try to open a file or i-tunes etc the cursor can't open it and so I have to press the start button.

I use AVG and occasionally use Windows Defender. Even in using these systems it is not showing up any malaware. The computer just isn't right. I hope you can help me.
Thank you so much.
I'm sending the DDS log.

Thank you Jack and Jill. I look forward very much to hearing from you. In addition to the above problems, I have another one and it looks to be quite major. I have subscribed to BTFon as I'm in a holiday house for a few days. When I went online a page came up from the 'Yorkshire Police' saying that I have been accessing pornographic material which I most certainly have not! I think it must be some serious malaware. I now cannot access my computer as this 'Yorkshire Police' page cannot be got rid of. It says I have to pay a £100 fine or have my hard drive erased.
I have had to go into Administrator to access your site. I do hope you can advise me about this also.

Kind regards
May

Hello Timmy1212 :),

Welcome to Safer Networking. I am Jack&Jill, and I will be helping you out.

Before we go further, there are a few things that I would like to make clear so that we are share the same understanding.

Please observe and follow these Forum Rules (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288).
Any advice is for your computer only and is taken at your own risk. Fixes sometimes will cause unexpected results, but I will do my best to assist you.
Please read the instructions carefully and follow them closely, in the order they are presented to you.
If you have any doubts or problems during the fix, please stop and ask.
All the tools that I will ask you to download and use are safe. Please allow if prompted by any of your security softwares.
Do not use or run any malware cleaning tools without supervision as they may cause more harm if improperly used.
Refrain from installing any new programs except those that I request during the fix to prevent interference to my diagnosis of the problem.
Lack of malware symptoms does not mean your computer is clean. Stick to this topic until I give the All Clear.
If you do not reply within 3 days, this topic will be closed.
If you are agreeable to the above, then everything should go smoothly :) . We may begin.

We will deal with all your problems. You should do all the steps in the Administrator account.

--------------------

Both AVG and Windows Defender has antispyware capabilities, having more than one may cause conflict. I suggest you disable the latter.

Disable Windows Defender real-time protection.
Go to Start > All Programs > Windows Defender, or you can access it from the Control Panel.
Click on Tools at the top.
Under Settings, click on Options.
Under Automatic scanning, uncheck (untick) Automatically scan my computer (recommended) box.
Under Real-time protection, uncheck Use real-time protection (recommended) box. Scroll down if you do not see it.
Click on the Save button at the bottom right hand corner and close the window.
--------------------

Please uninstall the following programs / toolbars:
Premiumplay Codec-C
MyTools
Advanced SystemCare 4 and any Iobit programs
Babylon Toolbar

Let me know if the removals go smoothly and any difference after that.

Run DDS again, and post back both logs of DDS.txt and Attach.txt.

--------------------

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM)© from Malwarebytes and save it to your desktop. Click here. (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php)

Run MBAM

Double click on mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end of installation, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
MBAM will now check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. If you can't update it, select the Update tab. Under Update mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
Upon completion of update and loading, select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
Check (tick) all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
After it has removed the items, a log in Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. If you receive an (Error Loading) error on reboot, please reboot a second time. It is normal for this error to occur once and does not need to be reported unless it returns on future reboots.

--------------------

Please post back:
1. update of situation
2. fresh DDS logs
3. MBAM report

Hello Jack and Jill. When my computer was locked today and I couldn't get beyond the 'Yorkshire Police' page I felt that this trojan was very serious indeed and that I needed immediate help. I rang AVG/Virgin who removed it remotely this evening. Immediately after getting back online I saw your reply. I'm sorry to have taken up your time and I'm so grateful for your help. I have so much appreciated the helpfulness and professionalism of Safer-Networking.

Kind regards and much gratefulness,

Hello Timmy1212 :),

Good to hear that.

Some tips to help you stay clean and safe:

1. Keep your Windows up to date. Enable Automatic Updates for Windows XP (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial35.html), Windows Vista (https://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/windowsupdate/learn/windowsvista.mspx) or Windows 7 (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Turn-automatic-updating-on-or-off) to always update the latest security patches from Microsoft, or you can download from the Microsoft website. Otherwise, your computer will be vulnerable to new exploits or malwares.

2. Update your Antivirus program regularly, it is a must for constant protection against viruses.

3. Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware if you haven't and use it occasionally. It is a new and powerful anti-malware tool (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php), totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee.

4. Install Web of Trust (WOT). WOT (http://www.mywot.com/) keeps you from dangerous websites with warnings and blockings.

5. Protect your computer from removable or USB drive infections with MCShield (http://amf.mycity.rs/programs/mc/mcshield/), an effective method to prevent malware from spreading.

6. Keep all your softwares updated. Visit Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector/) to find out if any updates required.

7. Make full use of Windows 7 firewall to step up the defense (http://www.petri.co.il/windows-7-firewall.htm) against internet dangers.
