Hello there,

I need help, please, with my machine Windows XP IE7 that, each time I turn the machine off to shut it down, it goes wild for about two minutes, like accelerating and noisy before it goes off. Also, when I try to open CNN video, it takes up most cpu, and clumsily display the video, erratically. I ran the Registry Booster and Spybot but to no avail. There must be something like Malwares somewhere out there. Enclosed herewith the DDS (pasted below) with zipped Attach file. Your help is very much valued.

Thanks for the kind reminder. As a matter of fact I do still need help. I have changed the motherboard, cpu, and migrated the contents into another HD, yet the problem still persists. I can watch all of the Youtube videos with no problem. The websurfing is perfect. But, when I tried to start my favorites CNN and JerusalemOnline videos, it just goes erratic and freeze. Also, when shutting down, it takes about 2 minutes while revving up with the fans getting wild to cool the system down, I suppose. However, if I replace this HD with some others, the shutting down gives no problem, quietly, a matter of less than 2sec. These three problems that I am looking for help. Many thanks again.

So is the DDS log you posted from the rebuilt machine? Have you been to Windows Update? Your running IE 7.0.


Registry Booster
This type of software is useless and not needed. You can remove it via the add/remove programs panel.

Download and run the free/standard version of ccleaner. (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard) Clearing out your cache with it is a start.

Thank you for the continued assistance. The DDS log is before the changes described above. But I am now attaching the new DDS just in case it is needed. Also I am running IE 7.0.

I have just followed your advice, so I removed the Registry Booster from Control Panel's ADD/REMOVE. Reboot. Then I run CCleaner checking all the checkboxes.

The result was the same.

Ok. Two things. You can download and run Malwarebytes:

Please download the free version of Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free) to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.

Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.

If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.

Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

Be sure that everything is checked, and click *Remove Selected.*

*A restart of your computer may be required to remove some items. If prompted please restart your computer to complete the fix.*

(1) The cache is cleared besides the use of CCleaner
(2) Hardware Acceleration is disabled
(3) The FlashPlayer is uninstalled, and re-installed as per the directive of adobe about this in the website
(4) Safari was tried for an alternative to IE7


First, comments about the above before answering the question relating to shut-down.

- CNN remains in the same state: once it starts, the fans spin ferociously sucking much cpu, resulting in pictures frozen.

- Good news, however: JerusalemOnline plays well for the first time.

- With Safari, CNN plays normally (but not with IE7)

Now regarding the shut down, no change was noticed, as yet. To answer the questions being asked, it follows:

The machine is HP dc7600CMT (desktop). When Motherboard is changed, no formatting or initialization is required, therefore, no installation CD. Not only the Motherboard/cpu were changed, the contents of the Hard Disc also was duplicated into another similar one, with the use of EASEUS Bootable CD for Disc Copy ver.2.3.1.0. The reason for all this is to see whether any of the Hardwares is the culprit (M/B, CPU, HD).

With the new Hardwares, the Windows update were carried out to date. No extra update was left undone.

I hope this information may be of help for further ideas.

Do you use anything like ad blocking software? Does Avira contain a "web shield" type application. If so try disabling it to see if CNN will work.

So the new mainboard is the same one that was in there? Have you been to the HP website to see if there are any updates available for your computer model? On shutdown you think its a fan thats spinning wildly and not the hard drive?

- Add-on in IE. I tried to disable as much as I could, but ended up with CNN stopped working - totally blank site. Then I tried it one by one disabling the items in the list, but giving same results.

- IE8.0. There was a time that I tried IE8, but I found out that I lost the Organize Favorites... in the menu of "Windows" Explorer. I wrote to Microsoft about it, but there wasn't much they could do. In fact I have long list of items I keep in the Favorites menu, that I need to access often. Microsoft gave me a lot of alternatives, such as using the Favorites in IE8.0 menu, or customizing it in Windows Explorer, (which I tried all but), I couldn't get satisfied. So, I returned to IE7. Today I again enjoy the "Organize Favorites..." in Windows Explorer with IE7. Therefore, for totally personal reason, I find it hard to upgrade to IE8.0.

- Avira. There is no "Web shield" there (Free version). I could read "web protection," but I am not subscribed to it.

-Mother board. Yes, it's the same kind, and fully updated from HP site.

- Shut-down/fans. I have two similar other machines. When I take their Hard disks to this main machine, the fans work properly, and nothing abnormal is noticed, including the shut-down. But when I insert back my HD, CNN causes the fans spinning wildly sucking up much cpu, which same effect is noticed when shutting down. Same- noisy. Apart from CNN and shut down (that takes 2 mins while revving up) I have no complaint whatsoever, as the machine works very fine with all other activities/tasks.

Hello there again,

Yes, as a matter of fact I have already done that to see how it goes there, but it behaves the same. I wanted to know if my main machine was the culprit, but it wasn't. That's why I posted this here, to find out just in case the trouble is not connected the hardwares but to something else.

Then I would be looking at the hard drive itself. No doubt you have run Windows disk defragmenter. Programs>Accessories>System Tools.

Also Windows Chkdsk (check disk) here. (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265)

HP also may have some HD diagnostic tools. Also the HD maker would have some: Western Digital, Seagate etc. Not sure who HP uses.

In any case since the problem duplicates itself, with the only difference being the hard drive then at least a defrag and chkdsk wouldnt hurt.

As you have rightly guessed, I have already done the chkdsk and defrag. Thank you for confirming.

What I am now thinking to do is, I have an old Hard Disc here with me, containing my last update till 10th of October 2009. I duplicated that Hard Disc, and continued to the present time.

I have just inserted that old Hard Disc in the machine, and the shut down was normal, just a matter of 2 to 3 secs, without the fans sipinning nor noisy revving. But, CNN sucks up cpu, the same problem as the one I am having now.

Now, I will duplicate again that old HD, and move to the new one all of my stuffs, activating the softwares, and continue from there. I wonder if you could help me put the CNN working right, please, as this would be the only problem there.

I missed to comment on this one. I realized that I have never done this before. But when I checked on the web, there it was. I downloaded the exe file, and run. I found so many yellow exclamation marks in the system. I am not quite sure how far this has something to do with CNN and the strange shut down, but give me some time first to put these drivers right. I will delete the unwanted, and get the updates for the rest. Then I will report back again. And the items needed attention are too many.

Yes it is from HP web site. But looking at the amounts of things which come with the yellow exclamation marks is very intimidating. Even the Keyboard is with Exclamation mark. That include the sounds and almost everything. So far, I could manage to get few right, but how on earth I could get all these in proper order. The Disc Drives in the list are full of exclamation marks. I am not quite sure whether to delete them, or to put them right, but how? That alone is 22 HD's (Maxtor, Western, Hitachi, Samsung, Seagate etc...)

Having spent too much time with these so far, I have come to conclusion, it's impossible. Is there any shortcut to this, please?

I cant say if this would solve your problem or not or if you would lose any data. Nor could I help you, all PC vendors are a little different in how they handle factory reset/partitions. I also never owned a commercial PC. I build my own. The best place to find how the options for this would be on the HP website. Just a thought, couldnt say if it would help any.

After going through long battles of updating the drivers, just now I found out that there are comments at the bottom of the Dialog box about each item selected. I am very sorry. It says, "The divice is not connected to the system." That explains all the yellow exclamation marks. I am not familiar with this Diagnostic, so when I saw the exclamation marks, I panicked, being reminded of the nasty experiences of finding drivers in the Device Manager of the System Properties.

That said, as for the Hard disc comments, all said "The device is working properly": Maxtor 6L160M0, both Master and Slave.

Perhaps, migration is the only option left to try, as far as I am concerned. When I say Migration, I mean taking all of the important things to the older HDD and updating it. This is the HDD of 10th of October 2009 I said earlier. I will use Eazy backup to do some of the transfer. As I mentioned earlier, the shut-down is normal, but CNN is not working there. I really wished this one could be repaired, since all my settings and configurations, and the softwares installed here would be a headache to reproduce in other HDD.

Note: I will keep this HDD all the time as it is, just in case it could still be put right or till a solution be found, if possible.

Yes, with the New set-up , shut down is no problem but CNN remains a problem. It virtually freezes.

I have done all these, and did it again as you instructed, but to no avail.

Now, my comments are the following. While setting things up, with the necessary configurations, and installations of the softwares, something came as a shock to me.

As I have just said that Shut-down was no problem with the new setting now, but the minute I installed AVIRA the free version, Shut-down went wild like the way I have described it so far. But after un-installing it, it becomes normal. Immediately, I took the old Hard Disc, and tried to un-install the Avira, and to my surprise, the shut down was normal.

Here is my question. Why does the Shut-down behave like that with Avira installed? Is it because of Windows XP?

Having said that, both Hard Discs are alright without Avira, but both still don't like CNN.

Now, I have left both HD without Antivirus until I get further instructions from you. Just for information, I used Grisoft AVG before adopting Avira (after un-installing the AVG). I wonder if this might be the cause(?).

(Last point. After re-installing the AVG for a test, no problem with Shut-down. Normal.)

Software can and does cause problems. Can be hard to track down unless it starts right away, becomes a process of elimination after that. Don't know what caused your problem and theres probably no support for the free version.

You might find some clues at the Avira support forum if many people had the same problem.
Normally I would just uninstall and reinstall some other software, not worth the time or trouble when theres so much other software out there. You might want to try the free version of Avast as another choice for AV.

I am not very familiar with CODECS, but I can tell that I have the software called Aplian (Replay Media Splitter, Replay Converter, Replay Music, Replay Media). I am not involved in "game"ing, therefore no game softwares in the System. Oh, lest I forget, there is also Blaze Media Pro installed, together with Audacity ver.2.0.1. Realplayer is my main media for almost everything.

A couple of years ago, I must have tried few things for MP4 when it was hard to convert into it, which made me adopting Applian, after trying all sorts of available free softwares.

I have just installed it, and run. The following was listed:
- AVI Splitter Codec
- Cyberlink Demultiplexer codec
- FFDShow LibMplayer codec
- FFdshow codec
- Indeo audio codec
- Mpeg Splitter codec
- Real Player Shell extension

It has successfully corrected all the items in the list.

After testing it, it has changed nothing for the moment - CNN remain unchanged.

I am now using the new setting from the previous Hard Disc 10th of October 2009. I am still in the process of updating the Windows, and upgrading the softwares. Jerusalem Online (which was a problem before, like CNN) is now working perfectly alright. System Shut-down is normal. CNN, shows no change. Once it starts to show the pictures, the fans accelerate wildly - sucks much cpu, and freezes, or erratically moves. I have installed this time, Firefox (instead of Safari), the latest version for watching CNN. There is no problem with it, co cpu sucking, and pictures display well.

So far we know CNN will play ok in another browser. Did you ever try CNN when you had IE 8.0 installed? I know you said you went back to 7.0.
Do have a pci or agp slot video card installed? If so do you have the latest drivers for the card?

Before I knew it, I crashed my machine. On Saturday, when I started the machine, I noticed something was wrong. First, it stopped by itself while I was away from it. When I came back, it went to sleeping mode, though I didn't set it that way. Next time, it just wouldn't start but kept looping at the Windows Logo, then back again, on and on. I couldn't even access Safe Mode.

I inserted the Recovery CD for repairing, and went as far as bootcfg/ rebuild, but I couldn't find the C Drive but E Drive only. It didn't recognize the C Dirive, and said that it was empty. That was very strange. Also, I used the Console for Fixmbr, but to no avail, either.

Finally, the last option left to me was to use Spinrite of Gibson to recover any damaged files (a process which I experienced last year), since I couldn't access chkdsk by the usual mode. When I started the process, I was surprised to see even the first sector was already damaged, and after that, so many unrecovered files appeared. It went all Saturday, Sunday even today, still hasn't finished it yet. That means, the HDD was badly damaged for some reasons which I can't explain, but all I know now, it can't be used again.

Therefore, I have to get another HDD, and restart the migration as before again. I will let you know how it went as soon as the Spinrite has done its job. I am trying to recover some of my data in there. I am very sorry for this string of bad news.

Sorry for the silence from my part, too. The recovery took too long (day after day) that I gave up. I am now in the middle of re-installing the OS from much earlier point than the one I said before. It's very challenging than I thought. I even had to re-install IE7. One problem after another. For example, it took me 4 hours to fix Active X Controller. I have not even installed MS .Net Framework2 yet. I know this is going to be a nasty another experience.

Perhaps you might have guessed it already. I had bad experiences before when I lost all of my data. That was a good lesson to me. From then on, I keep changing Hard Discs as often as I could so that, in any case I get into troubles, I just pick one from the stack, and updating it. Also, I do safely keep the two Recovery discs. This was one of my biggest trouble before for not having them ready at hand. Thanks for the compliments.

Hello there again,

I have just finished the long process of the migration, re-installing everything, and updating all the needful. The results follow:

- With IE7 kept as it is, I could watch CNN although at a rather dull speed. However, it doesn't freeze. Of course, the fans are quite noisy - consumming quite considerable cpu.

- All the rest are OK.

- It went all of a sudden without my knowledge, through updating, upgrading to IE8. Before I knew it, when I tried to open "Windows" Explorer to get some links I saved in the Favorites, the "Organize Favorites" windows went blank, displaying nothing but blank list. It was then I realized the IE must be (not IE7 but some other higher). And when I confirmed it, it was as I guessed- IE8. However, CNN didn't change much, as both IE7 and IE8 show no difference or superiority from each other. So, I un-installed IE8, back to IE7. However, in so doing, before I knew it, CNN went berserk, as described before. I couldn't watch CNN again. But, all other streaming videos online are OK.

Therefore, I get tired. Perhaps, I might as well stop it here, and to use Safari for CNN, or abandoning CNN altogether for others like ABC, etc.

Thank you again for all the efforts. I have learned a lot through those expertises of yours.

Sounds like a good plan to me. Whatever the problem is it dosn't seem like its worth spending much more time on it. You might also try FireFox, Opera or Chrome as your alternate browser for CNN. You might like one of them better anyway. Whatever other browser you use, remember to also keep it updated. I know FireFox has a auto update feature, Chrome also. I suppose Opera does to.

In fact I am so grateful to you. I counted it all resolved, considering the title of this thread, with the problem being on the wild shutting down. That was solved. All the streaming video online such as Jerusalem online are doing fine, and what more, even the idea of using other browsers in the case for CNN has been a great idea which I couldn't think of myself. Your expertise has been excellent. You handled the matter in a high level of professionalism. I hope others may find even a greater relief with their problems as I did with you.

This is a hasty note just to let you know that, I got a surprise this morning. I am sure you would be pleased to hear this. It's so happened that I can't explain what made it so. I could watch CNN flawlessly again with IE browser. What did it, I am not quite sure. It could be the Windows updates or the combinations of all things you led me to, inclucding the updating of Java. From my part, I did nothing besides that. All of a sudden, when I tried just for curiosity to double-click the icon of CNN on the Desktop using IE browser, there it went on normally. I tested it several times, again and again, just in case it was a one-time off experience. But it's real. I am now back using IE for CNN. Thank you so much again. All is perfectly well now.
