I hope i've followed the instruction you give to follow before posting. Here's what I've done...
1) had report of suspicious activity from windows security, went to windows site and made sure i had all updates in place, and genuine windows version
2) downloaded spybot, checked it for updates, ran it, it identified several problems, i clicked the fix problems box, it reported all problems fixed, but in running it again it still finds pipas.a, i click fix problems, it says it corrects it, but still finds it next scan.
2) ran spybot in safe mode, it says no issues are found, but still finds pipas.a when not in safe mode.
3) ran panda online, have report attached below
4) checked for latest version of hijackthis, downloaded to c:hijackthis, ran it, have report attached below.

I'm afraid i'm pretty much a big fat noob with this stuff, so any guidance that you can offer in resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Richard

As I said, I'm a noob, so I don't know what the following means, but thought I should report it anyway as the computer is now doing something different.

Started up the machine in safe mode this afternoon and ran the spybot program to make sure I had reported everything it was saying correctly in my previous post. During loading spybot the computer stopped and reported this error- systemfehler. code: 1400. invalid window handler.

I clicked ok, and it appeared to finish loading. I then ran the spybot scan. It completed in two seconds, and reported that no immediate threats were found.

I restarted the computer in normal mode and ran spybot. It appeared to load normally. When I ran it, it completed the scan in about five seconds, and reported that no immediate threats were found.

The previous spybot scans prior to these two all took around two and a half hours each to complete.

Again, I have no idea what any of this means, but I thought it might be important to those who know.

Sincerely,

Richard

Welcome to the forum. This is a Wareout infection and it is unlikely it just went away. See this: http://whois.domaintools.com/85.255.115.30 A gift from hackers in the Ukraine. Wareout can be hard to get rid of, if you want me to see what I can do, then post a new HJT log. I also suggest you stay offline as much as possible to keep the hackers from having access to the computer.

Thanks

Here's what I did.
Uninstalled and re-downloaded spybot- ran it and same problems appeared as before, super slow, then finding pipas.a repeatedly.
Got rid of symantec antivirus manually following symantec's instructions (couldn't find my password) to stop it from interfering with avast.
Got rid of my old javas and installed latest update.
Read a couple of threads in your archives similar to my problem and followed their directions (I hope this wasn't really stupid, but suspect it was)
a) downloaded and ran fixwareout.exe
b) based on message, downloaded and ran xp_fix.exe
c) ran fixwareout again and followed prompts
d) rebooted in safe mode
e) ran cleanup! to delete cookies, empty recycle bins, delete prefetch files and cleanup! all users
f) ran ewido scan and performed action on all infections
g) rebooted into safemode and ran spybot again.

Spybot now runs at what I now understand is normal speed (not 2 seconds, but certainly not 2-1/2 hours). It found a couple of things the first time, I've run it a few times more and it now comes up with no problems each time in normal and safe modes even after rebooting. Ewido gave a similar clean scan before I uninstalled it. Avast also gives a clean scan.

Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again for your time,

Richard

OK Richard, thanks for the feedback. LonnyRJones, one of the experts here is the creator of Fixwareout, I still see evidence in the HJT log but HJT might remove it, I am making a plan now.

While I do that, you have work to do. Understand, running two antivirus programs at the same time will have the opposite effect than that which you wish. Conflictions that are caused by the competing programs make you less safe then if you run one good program and maintain it properly. Here, read the information:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/03/AR2005120300087.html

You uninstall one of those, update and run a complete system scan with the one you keep. If anything is located that can not be deleted or quarantined. write down the exact name and pathway and post it for me to view.

I will work up instructions for the next step, but the conflictions caused by the two AV's need to be gone so we know anything happening is not being caused by that.

Thanks

Let's try this first since you ran Fixwareout and I do not see the items in 017. What I see may just be leftovers in the HJT log. We will find out like this:

How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {FD74FC57-89B0-DB70-384C-1307BB3C8E56} - (no file)
clutter
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [prcmon] panel_its.exe
WO
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [corrida] AliceSD.exe
WO
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [xxtoolbar] typeconf.exe
WO
O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - WRLogonNTF.dll (file missing)
old SpySweeper line

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

I will guess these are gone, just don't miss them. The running process is stopped now by HJT, and if you find them you can delete them. Use search companion and make sure they are gone)

AliceSD.exe
panel_its.exe
typeconf.exe

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, let me know how the computer is running.

I would normally ask for a ewido scan here and I see you uninstalled it. I keep mine, turn it off so it does not run. It is a great scanner when needed and updates are free for as long as you wish.

Thanks...Phil

Hi PSkelley,

Hate to take up more of your time, but just want to make sure I'm understanding things properly (or at least as best I can). Please forgive my lack of knowledge.

I had symantec on the machine but decided to switch to avast at recommendation of peers once it expired. I disabled symantec (which it warned me about endlessly), but avast still said there was a conflict at start up and only ran 3 of its providers because of the conflict.
Before my previous post, I went to symantec website and followed their instructions on manually deleting their software, because i couldnt just uninstall it- it would prompt me for a password that I don't remember entering and is not recorded on my hardcopy list. Now avast indicates no problem at startup and runs all providers.
I loaded and ran the trial version of ewido prior to my previous post, but then uninstalled it from my machine once the last scans came in clean.
I believe I only have spybot, ad-aware, and avast on my machine now (along with the cleanup! and fix files noted previously). I guess I mistakenly assumed they would not conflict with one another. Am I to remove avast and ad-aware before continuing?

Sorry to bother you further,

Richard

Richard, the only thing I pointed out to you is the fact you should not be running two antivirus programs at the same time. It makes no difference to me which one you run, I run McAfee.
I have given you enough documentation above including the advice of Microsoft which is taken direct from the information at the Symantec link I posted. You will continue to have problems as long as you are running two AV's and most folks with awareness say even having them installed at the same time causes problems.
Here is a link that may help: http://basconotw.mvps.org/SymRem.htm If you dicide to remove the Symantec program and have issues beyond what is in that link, I would contact Symantec Technical Support for help:
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/

Spybot and Ad-aware do not run unless you start them, and I have yet to run into a security program they were not compatible with. Once we finish, I will offer links to information where experts will give you more advice in the area of security, but the final decision will have to be yours.

Understand that you are no bother, this is what I do. I make my stand against evil here and I am glad to do all I can within my limited abilities.

Thanks...Phil

Phil,

Sorry to be such an idiot. I think I understand now, please correct me if i'm wrong. You're telling me that symantec is still running even though I thought I had uninstalled it. I'll read the info you gave me, figure out how to get it uninstalled, and then follow through with the scan and all the steps you've outlined for me.

Thanks again for your patience.

The Service (023) disabling them may be enough, you should not see them in the log: Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to (the service you want disabled ) and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

If what I am saying in any way conflicts with the instructions I posted or anything technical support at symantec has to say, It is worse than aol trying to get it all uninstalled, that is why it is best to use the uninstallers or technical support.

Phil,

Thanks so much for your patience. Followed the uninstall links you posted, they said they worked but symantec kept showing up in 023- Service, so i followed the steps you posted about stopping service status and disabling startup type.

Then followed the hjt corrections you identified, the three exe files did not show up in search companion, and then ran ATf cleaner.

Hi Richard, looks like one Symantec item left, here if the CastleCops on it: http://www.castlecops.com/o23list-76.html
C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\SavRoam.exe
O23 - Service: SAVRoam (SavRoam) - symantec - C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\SavRoam.exe
You can Delete that folder: C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\ <<< folder
While it is still running in services it probably won't let you delete it, so disable it first.

The balance of the log looks great and I would say Wareout is gone. Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Phil,

Just wanted to say thanks to you particularly, and to all the guys at Spybot in general. You are patient, efficient, thorough, entirely professional, informative and clearly fighting the good fight. My struggling student days are almost over, and when I hit the working world I will certainly send some financial support Spybot's way.

I hope you have great labour day weekend.

Sincerely

Richard
