After installing Spybot 2.0.12, Windows won't start. I get the Windows Starting screen but then the screen goes black, apart from some messages that flash on the screen so fast that they can't be read.

This is with Windows 8 Release Preview 64 bit running in a virtual machine.

Spybot v2.0.11 had been running okay apart from the updating problems (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?p=432950#post432950). I uninstalled v2.0.11 and restarted before installing v2.0.12.

After installing v2.0.12 I was able to update the definitions, but when I tried to open the Task Scheduler I got a side by side error and the scheduler wouldn't open. I thought that the system may need to be restarted, so restarted, but then the system wouldn't start as I've described above.

I've tried to restart a few more times, all with the same result. Windows won't even start in safe mode.

Let me know if you want me to test anything, though I'm not sure what I'll be able to do.

Hello,

We have tested this issue on VM 9.0.1 build-894247 with Win8-64 Bit. We are sorry, we cannot reproduce this issue.

Does this happen again if you reset your VM?
Do you know what the side by side error said exactly?
Do you have any critical entries in the event log?

Did you really only update and then made a fresh system start?

Or did you scan anything, or started a rootkit scan?

Best regards

I'm using VirtualBox, though I doubt that it makes any difference.

Not sure what you mean, but if you mean did I restart the VirtualBox, then yes.

Do you know what the side by side error said exactly?

No. I wasn't expecting it to be this significant so didn't record it.

Do you have any critical entries in the event log?

Impossible to tell since I can't get Windows to start.

Nice to know that after all my time here you still doubt my reports. Sometimes I really do wonder why I bother.

When I get time I'll create a new Windows 8 instance and see if I can reproduce this.
