So hi, yesterday i installed spybot 2 for the first time and there was no problem and not earlier today either but just an hour ago i went into explorer on Windows 7 SP1 x64 and right clicked a folder and BOOM explorer.exe crashed, twice after each other.

I figured out what was causing it and turned that part off.
It was the windows explorer integration, as soon as that was gone it worked normaly.

Here are the usual errors, unfortunate the error report is in swedish but maybe you can figure it out ;):

Hello,

Did you uninstal version 1.6.2 before installing Spybot 2?

Hey,

i am not alone anymore. I got a similar issue with my System (Win7 SP1 64Bit).
But i already posted in the german thread :D.
I right clicked a Drive in the Explorer and it crashed.

Hopefully there will be a solution soon.

Cheers

I actually didn't uninstall 1.6 but 2 took care of that before it installed itself.

@Sensor
just uninstall windows explorer integration from start center->settings->system integration

Add another user to the list. I could crash windows explorer at will.

Took Elvi81 suggestion and uninstalled windows explorer system integration.

I did fully uninstall 1.6.2 before installing 2.0.

Happens to me too by right-clicking folders or drives under Computer on the left column of Windows/File Explorer in Windows 8 x64.

Fresh install of Windows 8 and first ever install of Spybot 2. Uninstalling Windows Explorer integration (64 bit) solves the issue.

Uninstalling Windows Explorer integration may solve the crash issue, but it’s a little more difficult to do individual file scans since you have to work through the main SSD menu. For 32 bit installations, substituting the old 2008 context menu plugin, SDECon32.dll, in the Spybot - Search & Destroy 2 program folder appears to eliminate the Windows Explorer crash (rename or backup the existing .dll file first).

It’s not a perfect solution; you have to drag the files to be scanned from Windows Explorer into the scanner window, but at least you don’t have to load SSD before doing that. Also, it may work only for 32 bit installations as there doesn't appear be a 64 bit version available (2008 too early for 64 bit SSD?)

To date, I haven’t seen evidence of anyone other than myself trying this, and perhaps there is a more serious downside, but it seems to work OK on my 32 bit installation of Windows 7.

The old 32 bit file can be downloaded from http://forums.spybot.info/downloads.php?id=43.

Also, the SSD update module will report that the file needs updating. If updated, SDECon32.dll is replaced with still another version that may work for awhile, but, in my case, finally causes Windows explorer to crash. So, back to the 2008 file.

this has been going on since the first spybot 2.0 beta and is still not resolved in the final release of spybot 2.0.

i had these explorer.exe crashes on my Vista SP2 32bit home edition basic computer after installing spybot 2 final. i'll either remove windows explorer integration or use the old version of the SDECon32.dll file the previous forum user mentioned.

Will there be an update soon to fix this problem because I'm having the same issue? Those temp fixes for sure aren't going to have me download spybot 2,I'll wait until it's fixed in next update hopefully.

Hello,

You do not need to uninstall Spybot 2, you can simply disable the feature that is causing the issue.

Please run the Start Center, switch to advanced mode and start Settings.

Now open the tab "System Integration“. Here you can uninstall "Windows Explorer integration“. Click "Apply“ and "OK“ afterwards. Settings can also be launched via SDTray (the small Spybot 2 icon beside your systems clock in the taskbar).

Hello,

It would help us very much if you could try this little tool (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/85556593/Trac2310ListExplorerExtensions.exe) which would give us more information about any compatibility issues.

The app will list all other installed context menu extensions (that we haven't whitelisted as compatible yet), and this might help tracking down the issue.

Thank you very much. :)

Just wanted to throw this out there.

I tried the 32-bit version, copying it into the spybot directory, and using regsvr32 on the 32-bit dll that was posted here. (batch file does same thing)
I put it in the spybot folder replacing it with the old 32-bit dll. Still issues.

However this made that problem go away (or at least for now), and I still was able to use the system integration:

I was able to get it working by renaming the old 64 bit (SDECon64.dll) to SDECon64.dll.bak. (Not necessary, but no sense losing it)
Then I renamed the 32-bit one I downloaded from a prior post to (SDECon32.dll) to SDECon64.dll
It may be vital to register it first, although I doubt it.

I did this all in the installation directory of Spybot in Program Files (x86)

Just to test it out so I don't throw a lame solution that is temporary:
Updated,
Killed spybot processes,
stopping services related to spybot,
and restarting pc just to make sure.

Still is working fine.

Hopefully this works with people having this issue.

OK I just found out I have this same problem. But I have found out the issue in my case. Maybe this could be the reason for everyone.

The SSD context menu integration is conflicting with the Nvidia desktop context integration (NvCplDesktopContext) whose path is c:\windows\system32\nvshext.dll

My version from Nvidia is the latest version and timestamped 12/05/2013 20:47. As soon as I disable this context entry then SSD context works fine, and then when re-enabled SSD crashes explorer.exe

So hopefully this helps you guys get a fix for this. :)

EDIT: Forgot to say that the only other context menu I have installed is WinRAR which I also disabled while testing. ;)

(NvCplDesktopContext) whose path is c:\windows\system32\nvshext.dll

Get WinRAR here as well. And Nvidia drivers. This file version 1.2.0.1 from 2013-01-31 10:25 (driver version 307.83) ... but the Nvidia tray says it's the most up to date.

Could you tell me which Nvidia drivers you've got installed?

Which Operating System?
Which language?
Which graphics card?

Then I could get the file from that driver and compare (since it works fine with the driver above installed).

Also, are you using WinRAR 4.2, or a 5.0 beta?

Anyone else with this issue... do you have a Nvidia graphics adapter installed, or not? Feedback in both cases welcome.

Yes i have Nvidia graphics adapter installed (NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 M, Windows 8 Pro and Windows 7 Ultimate (32 bit each), German Language file, latest Nvidia Driver) NO WinRar installed.
I have the Issue too, but only some times.

Operating system: Windows 7

Dirvers: 320.18

I noticed this issue today and also have Nvidia in Windows 7, and had completely removed my old drivers and reinstalled the latest ones a day ago. Can't say for sure if the problem started after the Nvidia update or if it existed ever since I installed S&D and just never tried using the context menu.

Specifically: The crash of explorer.exe would occur when right-clicking on a hard drive directly in explorer and not necessarily folders.

Using a ShellExView to selectively disable/enable context menu items, my context menu crashes went away once I disabled the Spybot S&D entry in my registry. However, I subsequently re-enabled it and I am still not crashing (but I also don't see any Spybot context items appearing). I don't know when the context items should be showing up, anyway.

Just wanted to say this is still an issue in windows 8.1

Apologies for hijacking an old thread, but just wanted to let you know that I've just had this issue. As soon as I uninstalled the windows explorer integration, explorer stopped crashing on right click. I installed the integrations again to test if it did cause a crash and it did.

Hi, I’ve also been having problems since updating to 2.2 from 1.6x. Using Autoruns, I narrowed the problem to SSD, but after reading the above posts, I re-enabled SSD and disabled my nVidia entry, et voila, right clicking now causes no problems. My video card is a GeForce GT330M.
The nVidia entry is
NvCplDesktopContext NVIDIA Corporation c:\windows\system32\nvshext.dll
I’m running Win7 Ultimate SP1 x64, and only had right click issues when clicking on drives under computer on left hand side of explorer pane. I had no issues with other folders or files.
There does appear to be a strange entry for SSD as follows:
There are 4 entries as follows under
HKLM\Software\Classes\*\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers,
SDECon32 Windows Explorer context menu integration Safer-Networking Ltd. c:\program files (x86)\spybot - search & destroy 2\sdecon64.dll
SDECon32 Windows Explorer context menu integration Safer-Networking Ltd. c:\program files (x86)\spybot - search & destroy 2\sdecon32.dll
SDECon64 Windows Explorer context menu integration Safer-Networking Ltd. c:\program files (x86)\spybot - search & destroy 2\sdecon64.dll
SDECon64 Windows Explorer context menu integration Safer-Networking Ltd. c:\program files (x86)\spybot - search & destroy 2\sdecon32.dll
The same 4 entries appear at HKLM\Software\Classes\Folder\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers.
The first 3 can be enabled/disabled in autoruns, but the 4th in both places generates the error “Error changing item state: the system cannot find the file specified”, when trying to re-enable. Even though the box remains unchecked in Autoruns, if it is closed down and restarted, the item is once again checked.
My main computer has the same issue (identical os), running a GeForce GTX460 video card. Disabling nVidia here has also worked.
I have no idea if this is a bug in SSD, or (more likely) a conflict with nVidia, but I figure you can never have too much data!! Personally I have no use for the nVidia context menu, so will leave it disabled.
Thanks for all the hard work on SSD, it’s much appreciated.

Same issue here with a slightly older version of nVidia GT 330M driver (310.90) and Spybot 2.2.21.129. Disabling either one or the other shell extension stops the crashes.

Also, a huge plug for ShellExView (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html)by NirSoft. Without this gem I would have never found the problem.

Any idea when this will be fixed?

FYI - just spent an hour trying to figure out what was causing Explorer to crash when right-clicking within the Navigation Pane, and after determining it was SDECon32 and SDECon64, I found this thread.

The problem only occurs when right-clicking a folder in the Navigation Pane (left tree-view of Windows explorer). Right-clicking directories in the "file/folder view" on the right works with no problem.

So if you don't want to lose the Spybot Windows Explorer integration entirely, you can simply remove the registry keys associated with the Navigation Pane's context menu handler:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers\SDECon32]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers\SDECon64]

Remove these two subkeys and the crashes should stop. You can still right-click in the file/folder pane on the right of explorer to access the Spybot options for a given folder.

Hope this helps!

Seriously!? I have been looking for a solution to this problem for the past week!

Having narrowed the problem down to this piece of software I read that the issue is known about and will be fixed in a future release. This information posted by 'spybotsandra' in 2012 !!! Three years and still messing up peoples PCs? Unbelievable! Guess what's going in the bin when I get home...

Not happy! :nono:

And it is still happening! I just installed Spybot 2.5.42.0 Home edition and my Win10 File explorer has developed the same fault. Very disappointed.

At least the problem goes when I edit the integration settings, as advised above. But this shouldn't be necessary.

This is the fix for the Crash caused by Spybot when right clicking in Windows Explorer.

Download ShellExView v1.97 - Shell Extensions Manager
From: http://www.nirsoft.net/
Extract the files.
Run shexview.exe

Go down the list and find Spybot-S&D Explorer Integration
DISABLE it.

Shell Extensions are in-process COM objects which extend the abilities of Windows operating system. Most shell extensions are automatically installed by the operating system, but there are also many other applications that install additional shell extension components. For example: If you install WinZip on your computer, you'll see a special WinZip menu when you right-click on a Zip file. This menu is created by adding a shell extension to the system.
The ShellExView utility displays the details of shell extensions installed on your computer, and allows you to easily disable and enable each shell extension.
