• Welcome Guest, to the Spybot Forums! It's 2025, and we just upgraded our forum software.

Today is Safer Internet Day, and with our new forum, you can finally use passkeys to login. That was about time!

Of course, you could ask if a forum is still useful, with so many social media networks out there where you might already have an account, and met a lot of users. You can now use your login from some of those networks to log in here. And by posting here, your question and data is stored on our servers and not automatically shared with a whole social media network.

We'll also start using the forum for small bits of information, announcements and more again.

how to disable 'resident' functionality?

Since upgrading to Spybot 2.0.12.0 I can't figure out how to disable it's 'resident' functionality.

(In 1.6.2 I disabled "Teatimer" since I only wanted to run scans.)

If Spybot 2 isn't resident, what is running in the system tray?

I'm curious if Spybot 2 can run alongside an AV program like AVG or MSE...

I wonder too; perhaps I can disable startup item
C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy 2\SDTray.exe

Hello,

Spybot 2 does currently not contain a resident protection.
Hence there are no compatibility issues to be expected.

The icon in the system tray is the Spybot icon which you can also use besides the desktop icon to start Spybot 2.

If you still want to disable it completely:
Please open the Spybot-S&D Start-Center.
Choose the "Advanced User Mode" by ticking the checkbox to activate it.
Now click on "Startup Tools".
If being asked what you want to do choose "Browse system settings".

Choose the tab "Autorun".
Open the following registry path by ticking the "+" in front of it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\

Now untick the checkbox in front of:
SDTray - C:\Program Files (x86)\Spybot - Search & Destroy 2\SDTray.exe

Spybot 2.0 and Windows Defender on Windows 8

The Windows 8 Action Center says that both Spybot S&D and Windows Defender are turned on and that running more than one anti-spyware app at the same time can cause your PC to run slowly. The user should be able to turn off one of these two apps. We need a clear indication in the Spybot Help website as to how to do this. Thanks.

Hello,

As I said, there is no resident feature in Spybot 2.
If you want to disable any services you can do that as follows:

Please run the Start Center and switch to advanced mode.
Now start Settings with a rightclick and choose "run as administrator".

Then open the tab "System Integration“. Here you can uninstall the "System Integration“ services. Click "Apply“ and "OK“ afterwards.

Now go to the tab "System Services". Here you can stop the "System Services".
Make sure the checkboxes down under are set deactive for "Active after every reboot".
Click "Apply“ and "OK“ afterwards.

Best regards

I’ve gone thru this thread, and already have these settings you describe in this thread. However, every time I go to my Windows Task Manager, SDUpdSvc.exe and SDFSSvc.exe are running and hogging down my system. I can end their processes, but in less than one minute they are back. I do not need, nor do I want SpyBot running in the background. I just upgraded from 1.2 to 2.0.12.0, and I never had this problem with 1.2. Only reason I upgraded is 1.2 quit working for no reason.
