View Full Version : Windows 8 asking for program to open .disabled files

I installed SB2 last night on a Windows 8 PC. Today when I started that PC, and all subsequent starts, I get a small Metro style window, ie. no chrome, which asks me for a program to open .disabled files.

I'm assuming this is related to SB2 because it's the only program I installed yesterday which would be renaming files.

My temptation is to assign SB2 to open .disabled files but I don't understand the underpinnings of SB and don't want to create a problem.

Any ideas?

Bill

Hello splinter,

i too installed Spybot 2 on Windows 8 and did not notice such a problem.

Which Version of Windows 8 are you using (Pro or Standard)?
Could you please also provide a Screenshots of the Error-Message!

Hi bbnetwork.

I have the standard Windows 8.

I have attached a screen shot. It looks like just text because it's a metro style dialog with no chrome.

Thanks

What is set as your Standard-Browser IE or Google Chrome?
If Chrome is it set to run in Windows 8 Mode or not?
If IE are you using the Metro-IE (the App) or the Full IE (Standard IE)?

When are you getting this error exactly? (What are you doing before or at the time you get it?)

Also please provide another Screenshot of the Full Window when the Error appears. (Not only from the error)

Did you ever resolve this issue? I am experiencing it also.

Hello,

You have to use blindman.exe (in Spybot's folder) to manage those .disabled files.

Cheers.

Same problem here:
- installed SB2.1
- open Start Center
- open Startup tab
- disabled one program
- uninstalled SB2.1 at some point
- problem occurred right after

Probably something in the startup folder/registry that needs to be renamed back. What SB should have done is to move the entry to a new 'disabled' folder instead of renaming the file in place.

Sol'n: Just bring up the Windows 8 Task Manager, go to the Startup tab, find the .disabled file(s), right-click and 'open file location', then rename the link back if you want.

I do not show any disabled programs in the STARTUP section of TaskManager
