View Full Version : Spybot starts immunization/update automatically

Like the title says, my Spybot will occasionally start automatically and either update or immunize, but in either case, minimize a fullscreen game I may be running at the time. I've looked through the settings and can't find a way to stop this behaviour (although admittedly I am having a bit of a confusing time adjusting to this new Spybot). It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't minimize my fullscreen games which then can't be recovered and have to be Task Manager-terminated even if they are not unresponsive.

Any help appreciated,
thanks

Are you using a Home or above edition? :)
http://www.safer-networking.org/private/
In those, updates and immunization are scheduled, but they should be configured to be silent by default.

Hi! Thanks for responding!

I'm using the free edition. I've looked at scheduling but as it's a free edition, I can't change anything. It's more than a little frustrating. I'm also unsure as to whether the updates are current or not, it's been telling me that 83...or something... files have been up to date for weeks now, as well as telling me it's been over 8 days since the last check even when I may have checked only yesterday. So basically, I have two things worrying me - Spybot crashing my fullscreen programs with automatic immuni-updating and the possibility of it not having been up-to-date for who knows how long.

You're welcome. :)

Unfortunately,I'm not sure why your Spybot is auto updating and immunizing.Your version shouldn't be.
The immunizing logfile doesn't look like it has anything in it useful as far as this is concerned,I'll skip that for now.
I'm not sure if your updates file will tell me what's happening, but that one might be worth a look.
Could you open Spybot-S&D Start Center, checkmark Advanced User Mode, click Update, then over to the left click Show Update log.Go to edit, select all, then rightclick, select Copy, then paste it here.

As for the updates, when you first click on Update,it does a status check, and the box comes up and tells you how many files are up-to-date.After that, you can click on the Update button to download any new updates.

The whole update log? It looks pretty hefty! It's exceeding the character count, I can't seem to post it here. I've uploaded it to pastebin, here is the link to the log - Spybot update log (http://pastebin.com/su99NuRC)

I have just reinstalled it as well, thinking I missed something during installation of the new Spybot. During first installation, I must have chosen the option "I want to be protected without having to attend to anything myself", although it did say at that point that I can change that setting later...
I also must have left everything ticked at Select Additional Tasks screen during installation... it confuses me. If free edition doesn't even have scheduling, why was I given these options (especially considering that if ticked scheduling works, I have no way of turning it off in free ed)?

Dess are you using the Windows Task-Planer?

I have Win7 64-bit and not using task scheduler, I like having full manual control of my system whenever possible and feasible.

Thanks for taking an interest in this, I was starting to worry I would have to do without Spybot altogether, a prospect I do not like. I've never been without it.

Hi dess,

even if the free edition dont have sheduled tasks, like sehduled Updates or Immunisation, it creates entry into the Windows Task-Planer, which are:

- performing a scan, once a month
- updating (i believe once a day, but not sure here)

Into free edition, you can not modify or delete the existing tasks within Spybot this easy and you also cannot add new Tasks or select the level of automatism.

The reason why this tasks are created, is Spybot wants to make u safe, and therefore you need new updates and should scan your system sometimes.

I don't want it to update automatically, it crashes every single fullscreen program I may be running at the time. Once a day is a bit much. Sometimes it's even twice per evening, it can get pretty frustrating. Games are okay, I can live without saving data in them, but if I'm working on a project, I can't allow it to crash my programs and losing progress just because it wants to update. There must be a way around this without spending money on an upgrade (money which I sorely lack, if I may add).

As i sayed

The reason why this tasks are created, is Spybot wants to make u safe, and therefore you need new updates and should scan your system sometimes.

As far as i knew, Spybot trys to update as soon as you login and have internet-access.
So maybe it would help to wait till it have done its Updates, before you start to work on your Project.

You also could start the Update manually, just the way as Zenobia told you, this way, the auto-update should be skipped, because you would have already the latest updates.
Please make sure, you run the Updater with Admin-Rights!
In some cases, the updater need this Admin-Rights again, for his own, even Spybot is already runned as Admin, in this case the files will be shown as not up to date, even if u just updated before.
To get rid of this, rightlick the Application and select "Run as Administaror", you can do so also with the SDUpdate.exe into the Spybot-Directory. (open Spybot-Directory, select the SDUpdate.exe , rightlick the Application and select "Run as Administaror").
Into the Updater, you need to click the "Update" Button again, after the Status-Check completed.

It's not as soon as I log in and have internet access, because my laptop is on from morning till evening and it's in the evening that it decides to update. Running the updater manually beforehand makes no difference, it will still launch on its own, and sometimes running it manually makes it worse - it ends up automatically starting twice more afterwards. I scan my system once a week anyway, manually, so I don't need it to do it for me. I don't tend to forget to do this, it's part of my weekly maintenance routine.
Also, every part of Spybot I run is with admin rights specifically, by right-clicking to make sure.

You could have a look into the Windows Task-Planer, its integrated into Windows OS

But everything you do there, is on your own risk!

I don't really know what to do in the windows scheduler... I don't think I've ever needed to open it for anything. So I'm quite reluctant to do so now, especially if the fault lies in another program, like Spybot.

bbnetwork

I dont think you can really talk about a fault, which is in Spybot.

I cannot tell you why the automated update causes such trouble for you, i did'nt even ever notice the auto-update and usually its also set to run silent, so it should not disturb at all.
Maybe Zebonja or someone else from the official have a idea on this.

In generall the auto-update is a good feature and should not been disabled.

May i ask, which Projekt you worry about?

dess086
2013-02-28, 18:50
I don't like anything auto-updating...I like to pick time and place for it.

I use a lot of graphic software, all in full screen because I don't like distractions of flashing tabs, antivirus scans, wifi signal bars and whatnot (when I work, I like to be focused)... For example, digital painting. I have Photoshop set to autosave, but anything under 5 minutes is too much, and in 5 minutes I can make many changes to what I'm working on, which then may be lost when Spybot decides to update or immunize.
I'm hoping someone will be able to help me out.

If you open task scheduler and don't make any changes, there won't be any harm.Any chance you might do that for me? :)
Click your Start button,in the search box type Task Scheduler, then doubleclick Task Scheduler, when it opens click the little arrow beside Task Scheduler library,if there is an entry there called Safer-Networking,click the arrow beside that, and use your mouse to click on Spybot - Search & Destroy.
Do you see Check for Updates,Refresh Immunization and Scan the System there in the middle window, all with a Status of Ready?

If you did not select "Shedule Tasks" into the reinstallation (or unselect this option into the setup, as it is selected by default) the problem should be solved, because into the uninstall all sheduled Task get removed.

If not, open the Task-Planer. To do this you have 3 options:
- Click your Start button,in the search box type: taskschd.msc and press enter
- Click your Start button,in the search box type Task Scheduler, then doubleclick Task Scheduler
- Click the right mouse button on a blank area of the taskbar and select "Start Task Manager".

once open, click the little arrow beside Task Scheduler library, if there is an entry there called Safer-Networking, click the arrow beside that, and use your mouse to click on Spybot - Search & Destroy.
Now you should see 3 entrys: Updates,Refresh Immunization and Scan the System there in the middle window, all with a Status of Ready

Doubleclick one of the entys, a new window, called properties will open. Into this window select the register "Trigger".
Now u see a window with an entry selected and 3 colums, called "trigger", "details" and "status".

Click the "edit"-button on below the window, another window will open.
Into this new window unselect the last checkbox, called "actived".
Click OK into this Window and the next Window.

Repeat this for the other both entrys about Spybot.
Close Tas-Planer and restart your Computer.

However, i am sure, the auto-update should not disturb you at all, because it is set to run in silent-mode, which means in background.

Apologies for late reply!
Since I reinstalled and checked (or unchecked) the relevant boxes, it has not disturbed me. HOWEVER, I did run a manual update check every evening myself so I don't think the state of it now is 100% accurate. I will try leaving it alone for the next 2-3 days without manual check and see if it does it on its own again, and report here.
(as for task scheduler, I didn't see any entries relevant to Spybot there, before or after reinstallation)

I'll be back in a couple of days with more update on the status.

Thank you!

Thanks for letting me know.No worries on the late reply, sometimes it takes awhile before I can post back here, too. :)
It's probably safe to assume Spybot won't auto-update anymore,if you haven't seen it,it's been a couple days,so manual updating should be ok.(but if it does happen or the immunization comes up on it's own, certainly post back.)

I always used to check for updates on Wednesday's,since they used to release them on that day most of the time, and I believe they still do.I found that easy to remember.
And there's Refresh Immunization scheduled currently on Wednesday's,too,if you want to check immunization on that day, too,if you wish. :)

Alright, so far so good!
No automatic updates anymore. Hopefully it will stay this way. (Although the update message still says there are 83 files up to date. The number hasn't changed in a couple of weeks now. Is this correct?)

Usually the problem, if the Status of thr updates (if if there are Updates available and how much) does not change, is that the Updater is not rubbing with Admin-Rights. If the Updater have Admin-Priviledges, the status should change after Spybot released new Updates.

dess086

Like I said earlier, I run all Spybot parts with admin privileges so that can't be the issue.

bbnetwork
2013-03-07, 16:54
Yes but since Spybot had the auto-updates active till yet, your Installation of Spybot may be up to date already and so the Status dont change, because nothing new is available.

If you now, now the auto-update is off, dont update a while, Spybot should find something new, as soon as new Updates are available (probably next wed or one week later) and then the Status should change.
Please try this and let us us knew.

Zenobia

In addition to the above,I'd also like to add that for the past little while when Spybot does the status check when I click Update in Spybot,it tells me that 84 files are up to date.I'm not in that section of it a lot,but from what I recall any time I've opened it,it has said that lately,so I assume it's normal.

I found a way to disable the autostart of the Immunisation-, the Scan-, and the Update-Task, from within Spybot Free:

- Start Spybot 2 as Admin
- Open the "Autostart-Manager"
- Select the Register "planned Tasks"
- Look for an Entry with the Title "D:\Windows\system32\Tasks\Safer-Networking\Spybot - Search and Destroy\"
The first letter (D) can be different, if you installed Windows in another partition.
- Open this Entry by clickicking the little arrow infront of it
- U see now the tree Entry, which Spybot created, each with a checkbox infront.
- Just unselect this checkboxes and clos the Windows.
