I have run my anti-virus, A-Surared, Spybot S&D,and Spyware blaster: all in safe mode. Also have downloaded and ran Fixwareout. this is where my machine stands at the moment. every time I delete the O17 entry, it returns. Some time when I start my browser I get a note stating that Firefox Or IE6 cannot fine the Server. I can close my DUN connection and re-log on and it works fine. Will app\reaciate any and all advice.

Hello neenersnitzel,
Welcome to Safer Networking Forums :)
Please download, install, and update Ewido anti-spyware (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)
Load Ewido and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close ewido. Do not run it yet.
Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode on the screen that appears.
Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{EAC62E71-ED80-48AE-B816-A0480BD2CDED}: NameServer = 85.255.114.6 85.255.112.157
Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix Checked".
In Safe Mode, load Ewido and click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
Ewido will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
Restart back into Normal Mode.
In your reply, please post the report from Ewido and a new HijackThis log. Please let me know how your computer is running now. :)
Thanks,
tea

Teacup61, that an interesting handle.
Sorry that I've not answered sooner, but a tree about 25 ft. from my house took a direct lightning strike on Friday night and Ive been without a modem.
I'm downloading Edwido-setup right now. Its 2030 and I have to get up at 0330 so I'll do what you recomended tomorrow evening after work. I'll post the results then. Thanks for you time.

Hello,
Please disable Winpatrol, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
Right click the running icon of winpatrol, and choose exit. Then try the previous instructions again. :)
Thanks,
tea

Tea,
Went into MSCONFIG and disabled WINPatrol. By the way, when I scan with HJT before I get online, there is no O17 entry. After I do the dial-up thing then I get it. Here's the reports.

Hello,
Well let's just find what's causing this....stubborn thing huh?;)
Do you use Cookie Wall? Please let me know. :)
1. Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.
Thanks,
tea

Hello,
Let's go back to the beginning. If you still have it, please delete fixwareout and download a new one.
Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{EAC62E71-ED80-48AE-B816-A0480BD2CDED}: NameServer = 85.255.114.6 85.255.112.157
Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix Checked".
You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.
Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
FOR CONNECTION PROBLEMS :
Click on Start, Control Panel, select the Network and Internet Connections category or double click on Network Connections, depending on which View you are using. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item. Write down the settings in case you should need to change them back. Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically.
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks. If it does not prompt you to reboot go ahead and reboot manually.
Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.
Thanks,
tea

Tea,
when I reboot, HJT runs a scan automaticly. The O17 entry isn't in the resulting scan. After I connect to my dial-up connection, I re-run the scan
and the O17 entry i in there again! Don't know whats up with that. Anyway,
here's the reports.

Hello,
I want you to do the bottom part of this even if there are no connection problems, please.
Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{EAC62E71-ED80-48AE-B816-A0480BD2CDED}: NameServer = 85.255.114.6 85.255.112.157
Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix Checked".
Note:
If You have connection problems or those 017's ~ 85.255.114.6 85.255.112.157, return >
Before doing this write down all the settings, Note that not all system/setups even have these settings, While some connection service's will require them.
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
Do that for every connection listed.
Let me know. :)
Regards,
tea

Tea,
In the two connections listed, neither one has the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item in it.
One conection is labeled UMACS which is my Internet connection and uses a 56K modem and the other one is labeled LAN or High-Speed Internet which is for my home network and used an ETHERNET card. Dosen't seem to be any problem with either of them.
What now?

Disclaimer
This service is by no means 100% safe. If this scanner says 'OK', it does not necessarily mean the file is clean. There could be a whole new virus on the loose. NEVER EVER rely on one single product only, not even this service, even though it utilizes several products. Therefore, We cannot and will not be held responsible for any damage caused by results presented by this non-profit online service.
Also, we are aware of the implications of a setup like this. We are sure this whole thing is by no means scientifically correct, since this is a fully automated service (although manual correction is possible). We are aware, in spite of efforts to proactively counter these, false positives might occur, for example. We do not consider this a very big issue, so please do not e-mail us about it. This is a simple online scan service, not the university of Wichita.
Scanning can take a while, since several scanners are being used, plus the fact some scanners use very high levels of (time consuming) heuristics. Scanners used are Linux versions, differences with Windows scanners may or may not occur. Another note: some scanners will only report one virus when scanning archives with multiple pieces of malware.
Virus definitions are updated every hour. There is a 15Mb limit per file. Please refrain from uploading tons of hex-edited or repacked variants of the same sample.
Please do not ask for viruses uploaded here, unless you work for an anti-virus vendor. They are not for trade. This is a legitimate service, not a VX site. Hello neener,
Okie dokie then.:) We just had to shift directions a bit.
Please navigate to the following files and delete them :
C:\WINDOWS\system32\csxws.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\CSVGO.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\CSTLZ.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\encodex.exe
Try it first in normal mode, then reboot. If they're still there, then boot into safe mode and try again. Let me know how you come out, and we'll go from there. :)
Thanks,
tea

Tea,
I found and deleted the first three, but could not locate a encodex.exe to delete. Rebooted and the ones I deleted were still gone. Did the dial-up thing and ran a HJT scan, the O17 is still in it, I'll post.

Hi neener,
Let's dig a bit deeper.
Download and Save blacklight to your desktop.
F-Secure Blacklight: https://europe.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement.
click > scan then > next,
You'll see a list of all items found.
Don't choose rename yet! I want to see the log first, because legit items can also be present there...
There must be also a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers)
Post the contents of the log in your next reply.
Hang in there, we'll whoop it yet!:bigthumb:
Thanks,
tea

Hello,
Yes, it's a nifty little program. :) Problem is, it came up clean. Can you run eTrust again and see if encodex.exe is still there? If it is, please do the following:
1) Please download the Killbox (http://www.killbox.net/downloads/KillBox.exe).
Save it to the desktop and run it.
2) Select "Delete on Reboot", and then select "All files".
3) Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\encodex.exe
4) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
5) Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{EAC62E71-ED80-48AE-B816-A0480BD2CDED}: NameServer = 85.255.114.6 85.255.112.157
Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix Checked".
The follow the directions again for FixWareout. Please post the report, and a new HijackThis log in your reply. Hang in there.:)

Tea,
I work in a casino as a surveillance officer, and one of the things that guides me is "If it dosen't look right, it's not" after I posted the last results, I found a second log on my desktop. It was a little bit different than the first one so I went ahead and ran the scan again. Here is the results:
09/05/06 20:35:13 [Info]: BlackLight Engine 1.0.46 initialized
09/05/06 20:35:13 [Info]: OS: 5.1 build 2600 (Service Pack 2)

09/05/06 20:35:16 [Note]: 7006 0
09/05/06 20:35:16 [Note]: 7011 848
09/05/06 20:35:16 [Note]: 7026 0
09/05/06 20:35:16 [Note]: 7026 0

09/05/06 20:37:54 [Note]: 7007 0
Since this one is different than the last one, I will refrain from doing the above until I here back from you.

Tea,
Did as requested up to the log posting. As you can see, the O17 entry has changed the numbers. I guess a little surfing will be the true test. after I finish this post I will do the rest of what is in your last post, and we'll go from there.

Tea,
I went surfing last night and even went to sites that I don't normally view, and I ran into a few re-directs, but nothing on the scale that I was having. I think you have beaten this one for me. I want to thank you for your time, effort and expertise. I stand in awe!
Thank you very much.

Hello,
Redirects? Anywhere specific?
neenersnitzel
2006-09-09, 19:59
Nothing specific, I guess its just normal. When I come to this page, It appears that I have to go through 4 or five pages to get here. Maybe since I have had a problem with it I'm just noticing all the activity in the lower left hand corner of my browser more. At any rate, I'm thinking that I don't have a problem anymore. Thanks again for all your help.:bigthumb:

Hello,
How's it running now neener? :) If there are no further problems :
Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.
Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.
You should definitely maintain a firewall. Some good free firewalls are ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?lid=dbtopnav_za), or Outpost (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/download.php)
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html).
In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:
SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html).
SpywareGuard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html)
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial50.html).
Ad-Aware SE (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware)
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial48.html).
Spybot-Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download)
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html). Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.
IE/Spyad:
It places over 5000 malicious websites and domains in your IE's restricted zone.
IE/Spyad (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm)
Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.
* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.
Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.
Take care!

Tea,
Thanks again for all the help.
Here's a list of what I run or on my computer:
Ad-Aware SE
A-Squared
SpyBot S&D
SpywareBlaster
Avira Anti-Vir Personal Edition Classic
WinPatrol
CookieWall
I'm pretty adament about updating and running everything once a week.
I had been running ZoneAlarm up to about 2 month ago. I have an old computer that runs at 200MHz and I wanted to network with it. Zone alarm wouldn't let the old one see this one, so I un-installed it. I haven't a clue as to why, probably a setting that is getting by me. At anyrate, now I just use the XP firewall. I have to shut it down to network too, so I only do that when I'm off line. (the only good thing about being on dail-up)
This one has had no problems since I built it about six years and two motherboards ago. Two other Operating systems too. Except for the modem that went a couple weeks ago, every thing has really been working well.
Thank a bunch.
