Greetings,

My girlfriend's laptop seems to be infected with that nasty Command Service tripe. I've run the online virus scan (see below), the S&D in safemode (it removed Look2me but not Command Service), and the Hijack This log. (see below) I now turn to you experts for further assistance and guidance!

Many thanks and best wishes,
Jason

Hello Jason and welcome to the forum. We have several issues to address. First, the command.exe, if Spybot is reporting it, is leftovers in the registry from a poor removal by another program, possible Ad-aware? We can address that issue before we finish. My problem is that you have a Qoologic trojan, and since you mention Look2me, I can only hope that the tool you used, removed it completely?
If you still need help, then let's proceed like this:

1) Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

Credit to Rubber Ducky for the tool...and LonnyRJones for the original fix

2) Please download Qoofix by Rubber Ducky (http://www.malwarebytes.org/Qoofix.zip) to your desktop.

Right click on the Qoofix folder, and choose "Extract All". Extract Qoofix to your C: drive
Close all windows and programs, including internet windows.
Go to C:\Qoofix and open the folder, then double click on Qoofix.exe
Click Begin Removal and wait for the scan to finish
If Qoofix finds an infection, select yes to restart your computer
You will now find a log from this tool, located at C:\Qoofix\Qoofix Logfile.txt Copy and paste the contents of that report into your next reply here.

3) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

(some items may be gone from the fix, just don't miss any)

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(R0/R1 are redirects not making your browser run better. Click to see where they take you, you can still set any startpage you wish)

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us4nb.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://srch-us4nb.hpwis.com/
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://srch-us4nb.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.hp.com/info/e-center-p

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe, C:\WINDOWS\system32\fcdho.exe
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=userinit.exe,qwklyan.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [keyboard] C:\\kybrdff_13.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [defender] C:\\dfndrff_13.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [win3207927016151] C:\WINDOWS\win3207927016151.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

(some may not be there just do not miss any)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\fcdho.exe <<< delete the file (Qoologic)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\qwklyan.exe <<< delete the file (Qoologic)

C:\\kybrdff_13.exe <<< file

C:\\dfndrff_13.exe <<< file

C:\WINDOWS\win3207927016151.exe <<< file

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post Qoofix Logfile.txt, a new HJT log and any comments you think will help.

Thanks

Your Java program needs and update, see this information: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\ <<< out of date

Hi pskelley,

Thanks so much for your help. We really appreciate it!

I've followed all of the steps you suggested and now present the Qoofix Logfile.txt, a new HJT log, and comments as requested.

I've uninstalled Java as well and will install the new version once I get the okay from you that all is clear with the system. Throughout the process, Norton had been giving me popups that it was scanning various files for viruses. After the reboot from the ATF cleaner, I got one more. Could that be something new to be concerned about or just remains of everything else we've done so far?

Best wishes,
-Jason

Hey Jason, that looks like a clean HJT log to me...what say you?

After the reboot from the ATF cleaner, I got one more Could that be something new to be concerned about or just remains of everything else we've done so far? .
I will need more information, there is nothing showing in the log, so if you are getting popups we need to know what they are, where are they originating. Are they coming from online (do you have an active blocker running in Norton?) or are they occuring when you are offline (means they are originating from something on the computer. Run the computer for 24 hours, then give me some more feedback. I will post the closing information now so you can benefit from the expertise of the experts.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

I am including the instructions for the command.exe in case Spybot is still locating it, if you don't need it don't use it.
Please download and unzip Ren-cmdservice to your Desktop.
It will only work correctly if the folder is placed on your Desktop and extracted !!.
http://downloads.subratam.org/Lon/ren-cmdservice.zip

Open the ren-cmdservice folder by doubleclicking it and then doubleclick the
ren-cmdservice.bat file to run the program.
A text will open when it is finished, Post it please.
Then restart the PC run spybot check for and fix any problems found.

I'll ask tashi:) not to close this topic until we are sure all malware issues are gone.

Thanks...Phil

Hi Phil,

I ran S&D and it found the Command Service again. I downloaded the Ren-cmdservice as you suggested, ran it, rebooted, reran S&D and came back clean! Yay! Could the fact that Command Service was still on the machine, even after AFT, have been the cause of that lone popup?

Here is the Ren-cmdservice logfile:

Running from C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\ren-cmdservice
-----------------
Folder Present C:\WINDOWS\IA
-----------------

-----------------
Deleting cmdservice key
[SWSC] DeleteService SUCCESS
cmdservice key deleted
..
-----------------
Commandline utilities (SWReg and SWSC)

Please Restart your PC

After the reboot, things have been running normally again with no popups or problems. That one popup after AFT is still the only one so far. I'll follow your advice and repost tomorrow if we get any more.

Thanks a million! :bigthumb:

Phil,

24 hours later and there seems to be no problem. No popups, no browser hijackings, or out-of-the-ordinary things happening. The RSS feed wants to keep reminding me that the Cincinnati Reds lost yesterday, but I don't think that's a malware issue.

Thanks so very much for your time and help. It is very much appreciated! You rock! :beerbeerb:

All the best,
-Jason
