View Full Version : Nasty problem - possibly 'Troj/Agent-CIF'?

I have had this problem for a while now, and it's driving me nuts!
It appears that other people are having the same problem too:

Basically something is making .exe files called idd----.tmp.exe in the Windows\Temp folder, where the ---- is changed. The file then tries to access the internet (although it is blocked by McAfee Firewall, or so I'm told). Something, possibly these files, also adds a network connection called ENTER. This then presumably sets its self as the primary connection, and tries to dial something (I don't know what it tries to dial, as I can't get it's properties to come up. All I know is that it is a 'WAN Miniport (PPPOE)'. Also I thankfully don't have dial-up connection).
When it is trying to connect, usually when I am web browsing, my internet connection disconnects. The dialing then fails, I click cancel rather than retry, and my internet is back.

Some research leads me to believe it could be this:
http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/trojagentcif.html
However, I have only found some of the files detailed on the 'Advanced' tab of that page.

I have tried everything under the sun, but nothing stops this pest regenerating:
SBSD, AdAware, Windows Defender (Beta 2), Ewido virus scan, McAfee (Internet Security 2004) Virus + Spyware scan, ATF-Cleaner, combofix, cwshredder, along with regular deletions of the network connection and temp files, all without fully removing it.

Here's my HiJack This log:

I've managed to find that the connection is attempting to use these DNS's:

62.232.158.84
64.156.31.63

The first one has no website, but the second's root can be viewed. 64.156.31.63/websites/ contains lots of unsavoury sites that I assume the dialer is trying to pop-up or something.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris and welcome to the forum. Let's get up close and personal and hit it with a fist. Follow these directions and in the posted order.

This item: C:\Program Files\SpyCatcher 2006\SCActiveBlock.dll (file missing) while valid, is missing a file and probably not working at all. If you use it, reinstall it when we are finished.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb
How to use the Delete on Reboot tool
At times you may find a file that stubbornly refuses to be deleted by conventional means. HijackThis introduced, in version 1.98.2, a method to have Windows delete the file as it boots up, before the file has the chance to load. To do this follow these steps:

Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winetn32.dll and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now, otherwise click on the No button to reboot later

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winetn32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winetn32.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winetn32.dll <<< file (should be gone)

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log along with any comments you think will help.

Cheers

You may want to look into this, are your updates working ok? I suggest you ask McAfee technical support about it.

OK. Firstly thanks veru much for your help.

I tried to delete the winetn32.dll file on reboot using HJT, but the file wasn't there. I think this is most likely because I installed and ran Ewido anti-spy, and it removed a fair amount of things. When I did a scan on HJT it gave me this:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winetn32 - winetn32.dll (file missing)

I also changed my McAfee Suite to Norton AV 2006 and Norton Firewall, as my McAfee definitions subscription ran out (which might explain that 'Service: mcupdmgr.exe - Unknown owner - (no file)' ?).

I think the problem may now be solved, or it is just lurking somewhere.

Here is my current HJT log after the things you said were fixed and the PC was rebooted:

Hi Chris, I understand, and yes...if ewido removed the file it would have shown (file missing) in the HJT log, just as it would have if you had used HJT to remove it. The trojan is gone, but you still have adware. ewido does not get this stuff. I suggest you do this:

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/c...rch.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/c...rch.yahoo.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/c...o/bt_side.html G
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/c...rch.yahoo.com/
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

You can keep the ATF-Cleaner, it is a nice tool, here is a tutorial for using it.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=1925

That junk we removed, just because you see the word yahoo, it is adware and you don't want it on your computer. Yes..yahoo is in bed with the enemy!.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14

http://cybercoyote.org/security/not-admin.shtml

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

You should be good to go at this point...tashi:) will close your topic in a day or so.

Cheers...pskelley
