Hi everyone...
Guys, I could really use some help! I'm running Norton Internet Security 2006 on a Win 2K machine. Norton keeps popping up windows saying it has detected "downloader" and shows it as a t????????.dll file in c:\documents and settings\home\local settings\temp directory. These files always have 0 bytes. Twice I've found the same file name with .exe. I was able to delete all these files from a DOS prompt. However, they always come back! I've tried several different downloads and have gotten nowhere. Norton always says it's fixed it but it's still there. I ran Spybot S&D. It found 16 instances, most of which were cookies, w/no reference to downloader. Anyway, I've fought this for several days, getting nowhere! Can anyone help? I'd really appreciate it! Below is the HijackThis log...
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. I see some stuff that should be corrected, especially the first four toolbars (03) which are missing files and as such are probably not working at all. We will remove them and you should reinstall them if you use them, some deal with Symantec. Since these are damaged, malware may have damaged your AV software, I would discuss this with Symantec Technicial Support, a reinstallation of their software may be needed.

You are running a rouge spyware product: SpywareBot >>> http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

You are running an out of date Java program, see this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2 and I see resource wasters from Alexa, if you don't use Alexa, I would remove them. Before we start, my last questions is about SpySweeper. Do you own this program? Let's take care of these issues, and ask ewido to take a look for anything HJT can't see. Proceed like this in the posted order.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\SpywareBot\ <<< delete that folder

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log along with any comments you think will help.

Thanks

As soon as you have that HJT log posted, then follow these instructions:

ewido scan: (delete anything ewido locates unless you know it is not bad)
First download ewido anti-spyware from HERE (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"
Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the ewido report scan.

Post the ewido scan results as soon as you have it.

pskelley....
Thank you so much for answering. I followed your instructions, ran into a couple of glitches. after doing the ewido anti-spyware updates, I went it to reports to select "Automatically generate report after every scan". it tells me no reports are available. did I miss something?

there was a .dll that was running from spybot I had trouble getting rid of. I finally used HJT to get rid of it.

Spysweeper had been purchased for my old machine, I had not transferred to this machine yet. the version that was on here has been removed.

The following is the 2nd HJT log. I will post the ewido log, if I can get one, as soon as I finish the scan.

Thanks again for your help! It is greatly appreciated!

Please run the ewido scan again, I won't get to see the original scan but I can see if anything is left that ewido could not delete. Read and follow the directions carefully. I use ewido a lot and folks never have a problem providing that log. Print the directions so you will have them handy at the end of the scan. You can also open the ewido folder in the C:\Program Files\ and look for another folder which should be called "Reports", the scan report should be in that folder.

Use HJT to remove the line left by SpySweeper:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - WRLogonNTF.dll (file missing)
Reason I asked is it is a good program, just offers little once trials are past and uses resources.

This HJT log is clean, along with that ewido log, please let me know about any malware issues you are experiencing.

Thanks

the following is the scan. I misunderstood the msg. it was saying there were no reports available, i.e. no scans had been run. I did have a problem getting it to run in safemode. I finally booted to safemode w/networking and it ran. below the the report it generated.

Thanks,
Earl

Hey Earl, thanks for that feedback. C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT\ can be deleted:
http://service1.symantec.com/support/nsw.nsf/ba62122e5d142a6588256d87006b22be/831aa5c6ef0d750685256c370048ad89?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam
C:\hjt\backups\ > Open HJT > View the list of backups > check the box in front of that item and delete it. The cookies I am sure you know how to get rid of. Since you mention no issues at this time,
here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Safe surfing...tashi:) will close the topic in a day or so.
