Cannot Update Spybot Free 2.2

Noticed that my installation of version 2.0 was saying it hadn't updated in over 8 days. Tried to update but it just wouldn't work. Figured I'd better install the new version first and try that. Installed 2.2 as advanced. Update still didn't work. Uninstalled and reinstalled several times as admin or general user, opening the updater as admin or general user, running the update tool manually... nothing works. It runs through the check and says it has never updated and needs to be done. Click the update button and it just sits there. Nothing is being logged, no error messages, it just sits there.

Click configure proxy,and if Use Spybot Proxy is checkmarked,uncheck it,click Apply and Ok.
Your update info was retrieved,but perhaps the proxy(if enabled) is causing some sort of slowdown or something like that.Can't hurt to try. :)

Sorry, I should have clarified. I have tried with both no proxy settings (I don't normally use a proxy for anything else) and using the Spybot proxy. Neither worked.

I did wonder if maybe I have missed something obvious like needing to open ports on my router etc, but I can't find any information... or perhaps I'm just a bit blind!

You're welcome.My own Spybot did something similar for a little while,also,actually,and then eventually I was able to get the updates after I kept trying,with nothing changed on my part.That was a couple months ago. :)

This page mentions using the manual detection updates with Spybot 2.0(which would also apply to 2.2),so I assume they still work with the 2.+ versions:

So, having tried the manual downloads, and still getting told it is out of date, despite following the instructions, I still can't update it. This is really driving me crazy now. Time hasn't helped like it did for the previous poster.

Please help, I have no idea what to do... but honestly this isn't much use if I can't update it....

If you open Spybot-S&D Start Center,checkmark advanced mode,click Settings,then click the Categories tab,is there a bunch of things listed under Malware Detection,or are there only one or two things listed there?

Ok,since there are items listed under Malware Detections,then that means that there were updates added at some point.Otherwise,it would just show one or two things there.
It's very possible that Spybot doesn't "pick up on it" on it's update page when manual updates are used.

If your firewall was blocking the connection,I would think that the update info file would not be retrieved.But there isn't too much else to go on so far,so for the sake of starting somewhere,are you using a firewall? :)

Sorry for my slow responses. Dealing with health issues and therefore spurious online activity.

No firewall beyond that built into my router (Asus RT-N66U) and no other real issues with failed connections and updates etc. I did wonder if perhaps I needed to open certain UDP and/or TCP ports on the router but couldn't see anything obvious. I don't use any proxy just DHCP handled by the router. I'm fairly comfortable with networking (it's been a while but I used to work for an E-commerce software company so I am reasonably literate - or was, at least).

I don't recall anybody here needing to configure their router in order to get Spybot updates,so that would probably be a rare problem.
I am not that familiar with your router,but I did find a page online about it,and also what looks to be the manual for it.
Do you have your router set-up in any special way?

No, nothing particularly different. Just your generic home set up, changed default management ports, proxies etc but nothing that should affect it.

Other than that, nothing else.

I tried disabling port forwarding in case one of the above ports was necessary. Still didn't fix however, despite rebooting and reconnecting. So I don't think that is the issue.

When I installed the newest Spybot a few days ago,I had some trouble updating manually at first,too.It doesn't show in the logfile,of course,but I had similar problems,if I remember it right,when I clicked the update button and it just stayed red and seemed to do nothing when I clicked the update button.I think this is the right date from my updates logfile:

Then again,I've been having problems with my modem,the internet seemed fine at the time,but I may have been offline at the moment and not realized it.I can't say for certain whether it was on Spybot's end of things or mine where the problem was.

Which is my rather long winded way of saying that I'm uncertain if something is wrong on Spybot's end of things with updates,or if there is something with your set-up that is preventing updates. :)
Or maybe even a combination of the two.

I'm not very familiar with configuring anything,my router has a firewall,very simple and rudimentary,so I mostly have just left it alone to do it's thing.But I do see the page about the Asus RT-N66U router has info about the firewall section.It's probably unlikely Spybot updates are blocked from the router firewall,but maybe you could read the page,then take a peek in the router firewall section,just to check if there is anything in there that might be related to Spybot.I see there is a url and keyword filter,general tab and Network Services filter tab. :)

Yeah, mostly everything is just at default. I'll double check with my housemate but I am fairly sure the update worked for him recently, on the same network but a different device... weird. :(

Upgrading to 2.3 hasn't fixed it either. The last six log file entries:
