Hello There,

Can anyone help? Last week I picked up something nasty including TegASaurus. I have run Spybot and Ad-Aware. They keep finding stuff and destroying it but the overall problem of pop ups is not going away and whatever I still have seems to continue to attract more viruses. I'm not the most computer savey but I followed the instructions in another link and I now have the Hijack This icon so I can run Hijack This pretty easily. Here is my log:

There is a removal wizard that has popped up several times so I think the answer to your question is YES but not 100% sure. I will now close out and follow your instructions and post a new HiJack This.

Thx,

O.K., I checked and deleted the items on Hijack This. Then re-booted. I could not find the additional files you mention at the bottom.

C:\WINNT\System32\mspmtwnl.dll ... file
c:\winnt\system32\stonedrv.exe ... file
C:\WINNT\System32\rxhblq.dll ... file

C:\WINNT\sys031053650142.exe ... file

When I go to C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 there are only numbered folders but when I click on them nothing appears.

I am still getting the pop-ups. Just got a Party Poker popup. That seems to be the most popular one.

Here is my new log:

Just figured out how to look at the hidden system files. O.K. yes, one of those files I was able to find: C:\WINNT\System32\rxhblq.dll ... file

I manually deleted it and rebooted. Here is my new Hijack This:

Still getting the "Random" or "Timed" pop up. Usually this pop up beats my Pop Up Stopper. Stuff like Party Poker and investment ads.

Hi

1. Download Pocket KillBox .. http://www.help2go.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=download&id=378 (unzip to the desktop)

2. Run the Killbox.exe file

check the box "Delete on Reboot"

copy and paste the following bold lines into the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox (one at a time) ...after each one, click the red button with the white X on it.

Say yes to "delete on reboot" and NO to reboot now, untill you have entered ALL the files, then say "yes" to reboot now...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mspmtwnl.dll

C:\WINDOWS\system32\midivdsh.dll

C:\WINDOWS\system32\kbdgwiad.dll

Let it reboot - If you get a PendingOperations message (reboot manualy) ...

Run hijackthis and post a new log

Hi

Thanks....

Did you understand the instructions for using killbox ?

did you have any problems following them ?

Because it doesn't appear to have worked and it should have on this infection...

this entry in your log :-

O20 - Winlogon Notify: mspmtwnl - C:\WINNT\System32\mspmtwnl.dll

should now read :-

O20 - Winlogon Notify: mspmtwnl - C:\WINNT\System32\mspmtwnl.dll (file missing)

but it doesn't...

And you obviously still have the file because it is shown in the running processes at the top of the log :-

C:\WINNT\System32\mspmtwnl.exe

Looks like it is still there. Am I possibly not unzipping Killbox? I'm able to get into Killbox. I highlighted remove on reboot then I pasted each of the three lines seperately and clicked on the X. On the third one I said yes to REBOOT NOW.

Does that seem like I did it right?

I just tried STANDARD FILE KILL for that first entry you wanted me to delete and it says "the file does not seem to exist"

Matt The Pirate
2006-09-03, 01:20
By the way, when If finished adding the three lines to KILLBOX I said yes to reboot and it rebooted my computer immediately. But when it rebooted there wasn't any indication that Killbox was doing anything at the reboot. I know when SpyBot asks to start on reboot and you say yes, you will then see it upon reboot.

Hi

Am I possibly not unzipping Killbox?

Only you know that...if you have unzipped it, you should see the killbox.zip & killbox.exe next to each other, & click the killbox.exe to run it...

If you doubleclick the killbox.zip it will open in the zip file, & you will see the killbox.exe in it, if you run it from here it isn't unzipped, you still have to extract it first.

Having said that, after your first attempt to delete the file it was still shown as running in your running processes, ...post #12

After the second attempt it is not shown as running, ... post #15

You appeared to confirm it's deletion by attempting a standard file kill, which said "the file does not seem to exist"

yet in both logs the O20 entry does not say (file missing) & it always does when the file is missing in an O20 Winlogon Notify key.

Please post these 2 logs for me...

1. Please download silentrunners from here :-

http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip

2. unzip to your desktop

3. double click on the VBS file (If your AntiVirus alerts, allow the script to run.)

4. Once finished, the script will save a Notepad document to your Desktop.

5. Copy and paste the contents of that text file in this thread.

Then ...

Run Hijackthis

Click...... open the Misc Tools section

Tick the 2 boxes next to Generate Startuplist Log

Then click Generate Startuplist Log

Post the log here please

SO that's the ...

1. SilentRunners log
2. startuplist log

O.K., I actually figured out I had not unzipped Killbox. I have now unzipped it and followd the Killbox instructions for deleting those three items. Unfortunately, it still appears have not worked.

I was able to do the SilentRunners and here is the log:

Something weird going on here...

this file is once again in your running processes...

C:\WINNT\System32\mspmtwnl.dll

because of this entry in your startuplist :-

Windows NT 'Wininit.ini':
PendingFileRenameOperations: C:\WINNT\System32\mspmtwnl.exe

I want you to reboot again and post a new hijackthis log

it appears to be set up to be deleted this time...

Steamy,

Thanks for all your help so far. I did a complete shutdown and re-started my computer. I'm having some problems with programs opening REALLY, REALLY slow. Even just Hijack This or Internet Explorer. I had to reboot a couple times just to get Hijack this and IE to both open normally. This last boot they both opened right away. The file still appears to be there. I really don't have much on my computer. The only stuff I can think that might conflict with Killbox is Ad-Aware, My IE settings or pop-up stopper which I have set to "off". But I'm no expert.

HI

I see the file is not running again... it seems to alternate firm log to log... running, not running then running again...

Let's try a different approach...

Download and install the 30 day trial of Ewido Anti-Spyware from HERE :-

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

1. Download it to your desktop
2. Doubleclick the ewido icon to start the ewido setup process...
3. update the definition files....
Click the Update icon then select the Update now link...
Select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
4. select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab
click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine
5. Under Reports...
Select Automatically generate report after every scan
Un-Select Only if threats were found
6. Close Ewido > Do not run the scan yet.

Boot your computer into Safemode

1. Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
2. As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
3. Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
4. Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process

1. Launch Ewido-Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
2. Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
3. Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
4. Once the scan is complete do the following:
5. If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
6. Next select the Reports icon at the top.
7. Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
8. make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
9. Close Ewido
10. Copy & paste the ewido report in your next post

While still in safemode....

run hijackthis and fix these entries :-

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [webHancer Survey Companion] "C:\Program Files\webHancer\Programs\whSurvey.exe"

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: midivdsh.dll kbdgwiad.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: mspmtwnl - C:\WINNT\System32\mspmtwnl.dll

O21 - SSODL: IbKmPXsD - {54B38ED3-FE19-2479-BD0A-CF1673EFCA3B} - C:\WINNT\System32\ac.dll (file missing)
O21 - SSODL: DCOM Server 2236 - {2C1CD3D7-86AC-4068-93BC-A02304BB2236} - (no file)

Still in safemode find and delete :-

C:\Program Files\webHancer ... folder

see if you can find this file again :-

C:\WINNT\System32\mspmtwnl.dll

Try to delete it if you find it...

Boot back to normal mode...

now post the ewido log and a new hijackthis log

O.K.,

I downloaded EDIWO and did the updates. I'm having trouble finding safe mode? I rebooted and tapped F8. It brought me to a menu with the following:

1. Removable Devices
2. ATAPI CD-ROM Drive
3. Hard Drive
<Setup Options>

Since I didn't see SAFE MODE I went into setup options but I did not see a safe mode in there either.

O.K., I figured out option number 1 must mean safe mode. I pressed enter on removable devices and loaded that way.

Once logged on I followed the instructions but there were some bumps along the way.

I ran EWIDO and it found several trojans, keyloggers, adware, backdoors and hijackers. Once finished running I did apply all actions. It gave a green message that it deleted everything. But then I clicked on "reports tab" and it said "no reports available" so I don't have a report to post from EWIDO.

Next, I ran HiJack this and attempted to delete the 5 lines you mentioned to delete. It some kind of trouble and gave an error message. Looking at the log it does not appear that it deleted all those lines.

Then, I tried to find:

Still in safemode find and delete :-

C:\Program Files\webHancer ... folder

see if you can find this file again :-

C:\WINNT\System32\mspmtwnl.dll

I could not find either.

Then I booted out of safe mode into regular mode and ran HiJack This. Here is my log:

I'm still having a problem where on some boots programs hang up but then other boots things seem to run normal.

How does it look?

I ran Ewido again and now I see where there is an icon for SAVE REPORT. The Ewido scan I just ran now only found a couple tracking cookies. I guess I screwed that up.

Dyfuca or something like that was one of the Trojans it found the first time it ran but like I said. There were about 10 different Trojans, backdoors etc. that it found on the intial run. I wish I would have saved that report properly.

System seems pretty clean at this point. I'm not getting any pop-ups. The only problem I'm having is like I said on some boots I'm having trouble with programs crashing or hanging up/timing out as I try to open them. Something is definitely wrong but it is inconsistent.

HI

Ewido got the one we were after ... mspmtwnl.dll

O20 - Winlogon Notify: mspmtwnl - C:\WINNT\System32\mspmtwnl.dll (file missing)

It's a pity about the log, I would have liked to have seen what else it found...

If you run hijackthis again, you will now be able to fix this entry :-

O20 - Winlogon Notify: mspmtwnl - C:\WINNT\System32\mspmtwnl.dll (file missing)

--
Please go to the C:\windows\temp folder and delete all the files inside, (do not delete the folder itself)

--
We just have these to get rid of now :-

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: midivdsh.dll kbdgwiad.dll

The warning you got from hijackthis will have been to the effect that it could not backup this multiple .dll entry before deleting it...

Let's try killbox again...

Run the Killbox.exe file

check the box "Delete on Reboot"

copy and paste the following bold lines into the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox (one at a time) ...after each one, click the red button with the white X on it.

Say yes to "delete on reboot" and NO to reboot now, until you have entered ALL the files, then say "yes" to reboot now...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\midivdsh.dll

C:\WINDOWS\system32\kbdgwiad.dll

Let it reboot - If you get a PendingOperations message (reboot manually) ...

Run hijackthis and post a new log

1. Delete O20 - Winlogon Notify: mspmtwnl - C:\WINNT\System32\mspmtwnl.dll (file missing) using HiJack This.

Yes, I was able to do this.

2. Delete contents of C:\Windows\Temp folder

I did not have this folder so I created a "Temp" folder at C:\Windows\

3. Used Killbox to delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\midivdsh.dll AND C:\WINDOWS\system32\kbdgwiad.dll

I followed instructions but when I finished adding both files and tried to delete and reboot now I got the message "Pending File Rename Operations Registry Database has been Removed by external process"

So I manually re-booted but I don't think it killed those files or did what it was supposed to do.

I'm having tons of trouble with stuff hanging up but I am at least able to do several reboots and eventually complete the tasks we are working on.

Hi

RE: "Pending File Rename Operations Registry Database has been Removed by external process"

All this means is you need to reboot manually ... which you did anyway...

Now that you've tried to delete those files with killbox... see if you can fix the entry in hijackthis again...

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: midivdsh.dll kbdgwiad.dll

It should be a simple case of hijackthis deleting the registry entry, & killbox deleting the files...

post a new hijackthis log and we'll try a slightly different approach, if it's still there...

I'm having tons of trouble with stuff hanging up

please explain this in more detail...

How big is your harddrive & how much free space do you have ?

How much RAM do you have ?

please run Ccleaner...

Download CCleaner from :-

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ (click the download tab)

During the installation be sure to UN-check the box for "Ccleaner Yahoo Toolbar" unless you want it.

doubleclick the ccsetup.exe file and install the program...

After installing, go to Start > programs > CCleaner > Options > Advanced > UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

Make sure the "windows" tab is selected

Under "internet explorer" tick...

Temporary internet files
Cookies* > see Note below
History
Recently typed URL's (leave this unticked if you DON'T want to clear the drop down list in the address window of IE)
Delete index.dat files
Last download location
Autocomplete form history

under "Windows explorer" these are optional, but you can safely tick them all if you wish, they are only "most recently used lists"

Other explorer MRU's (leave this unticked if you DON'T want to clear lists such as the start\run list)

under "System"

Tick ALL these ...

under "Advanced"

no need to tick any of these (but you can if you want, and realise what they do)

Applications tab...

These will mostly clean out old log files for these applications...

Clean:- (if you use them)

Firefox/Mozilla (optional - leave the cookies - see note)
Opera
Sun Java
ZoneAlarm
...
Personally I clean everything in the applications tab... but you tick what you want...

Note: *If there are any cookies you want to keep (if you remove the cookie for a site you require a password for, you will need to re-enter your password when you next visit that site) ... click options > cookies > then keep the cookies you want.

click "analyse" if you want to see a list of what is going to be removed, before it is removed.

Or

click "run cleaner" to let it get on with it's work... clicking this will result in the following pop-up

"This process will permanently delete files from your system. Are you sure you wish to proceed?"

click OK.

cheers

1. Downloaded and ran the CCleaner. Had no problems.

2. I am not sure how to check for my disc usage. The only info I was able to find was

501 MHz
384 MB of RAM

3. Tried to use HIJACK THIS to delete the line: O20 - AppInit_DLLs: midivdsh.dll kbdgwiad.dll. This gave me the following error message

"An unexpected error has occured at procedure: Modbackup-Makebackup" and something about "Error #5 - Invalid prodedure call or argument". But it does appear to have removed that line item.

HI

Well done... your hijackthis log is at last clean :)

2. I am not sure how to check for my disc usage. The only info I was able to find was

501 MHz
384 MB of RAM

That's your CPU size & amount of memory ... there Ok...

Go to > Start > My computer > right click the C: drive icon > properties ...

you should see :-

used space ?
free space ?

--

3. Tried to use HIJACK THIS to delete the line: O20 - AppInit_DLLs: midivdsh.dll kbdgwiad.dll. This gave me the following error message

"An unexpected error has occured at procedure: Modbackup-Makebackup" and something about "Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument". But it does appear to have removed that line item.

All that means is that hijackthis was unable to backup the entry with the double .dll file .... but it finally deleted the entry.... for really stubborn malware it can take 5 or 6 attempts before it finally goes...

How's the computer running now ?

in one of your previous posts you said "I'm having tons of trouble with stuff hanging up"

is this still the case ?

if so, can you give more details ?

Oh yeah, I see it now...

Free Space: 13.3 GB
Total Size: 19.0 GB

Looks like no problem here I guess.

I don't seem to be having the hang up problem right now so I think we can assume all is clean. Maybe it was hanging up because I was missing the TEMP folder. It seems like once I added that I have been O.K.

Anyway, thank you so much for all your help. I think you can go ahead and close my ticket.

THANK YOU,

Im Glad we could help
Since the problems are solved Im going to close the topic now, this keeps others with similar problems from posting there logs/question here, they should start a new topic.
If you should need to post another log for the same PC let one of us know via a PM (personal message).
