Hi again,

Are you being redirected to other sites as i am looking at a bad proxy setting ?
uProxyServer = localhost:21320

OTL by OldTimer

Download OTL (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe) to your desktop.
Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt.
Note:These logs can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them both in.

Still with me, still need help ?

hi, i'll just give my understanding of the issues i have here, then we can narrow things down from there. my wife and grandkids use this computer regularly and safe surfing is not really in the vocabulary. i try and keep an eye on things but can't keep up with it all the time. lately while my wife is going over the news (nbc) mostly i noticed the firefox wanted to redirect at about every site she tries to load. i have the fox configured to block that sort of thing, so its never allowed as a rule however its a little bothersome to me. i may be just paranoid from a bad experience a while back but it seems like a lot of redirecting that shouldn't be coming up. i guess my ignorance is showing a bit here but i'm not familiar with proxy settings, i will go with what the spy-bot defaults suggest and call it good. any settings that are changed from that i'm not aware of,if you see anything that doesn't look right let me know. ok under the heading of god knows what else, i'm attaching the malware bytes scan log that was done at the same time we were fixing my other machine "again thanks for the help on that one". as you can see this machine was had bad by wedownload manager. as with mysearchdial on the other machine i thought i had removed wedownload off this computer. however as you can see malware bytes found it hiding still. i might mention wedownload is possibly the most tenacious and annoying software i have ever come across (my wife was thrilled to be offered a wife from overseas as well as an endless line of useless stuff) since that experience she is motivated to learn more about this safe surfing stuff. i still haven't figured out where she got wedownload but i hope to never see it again. i'll close now, hope i attached the right log (dds) let me know if i got that right. thanks a again and have a good one.

If you still require my help you need to reread my initial post to you and follow instructions, I did not ask you to run Malwarebytes or DDS, I asked for a OTL log so we can remove that bad proxy. I see that Malwarebytes removed most of wedownload but it may not all be gone, an OTL log will show if there is more to remove besides that bad proxy

hi ken, we may have crossed paths with the OTL thing. looks like our last messages were pretty close together. the malware scan was just put in to show what kind of stuff was on the computer earlier hope its gone but we will see. if you have any problems with the OTL file let me know. thanks

OK, no problem but you did not copy and paste or attach the OTL log. I prefer if you copy and pasted it, you can attach the extras

Never mind i found it

We going to remove that proxy, also your host file is infected so we are going to reset it, these are where your redirects are coming from. I think I would stay away from PopCap games and wild tangent as those games are add related

Run these in order please

Open OTL.exe

Copy/paste the following text written inside of the code box into the Custom Scans/Fixes box located at the bottom of OTL

Go ahead and open Malwarebytes....check for updates and run a new Threat Scan. If it comes up clean let me know , if it finds threats and removes them then post the new log please

Then run a new scan with OTL and post that log also, there wont be an extras log this time so dont knock yourself out looking for it

AdwCleaner site wants you to look at adds so that fine, no need to look at them

hi again, system is looking pretty good can't find anything to complain of, i'll be watching the browsing that gets done a little closer from now on. i guess i will do some reading on proxy settings also wouldn't hurt to learn a little more considering the number of people on these machines. before we wrap up this thread i would like to ask your opinion on java security. as i was deleting pop cap and wild t. i came across two java versions i uninstalled the older but i have heard the new version may not be that secure. if i dump all the java will my firefox etc. still work okay? i don't use either machine for online banking and i use a prepaid visa for things like netflix and such to limit risks so mining any numbers wouldn't be of much use, i just like to have as much control as possible over my compters. thanks again for the help

Glad things are back to normal for you. As far as Java, some people can run without it, the secret is to keep it updated

https://www.java.com/en/download/

Or...

Go to your Control Panel and click on the Java Icon ( looks like a little coffee cup ) click on About and you should have Version 7 Update 60, if not proceed with the instructions.

Go to the update Tab and update it
Important, during the upgrade UNCHECK ASK TOOL BAR. ( you do not need or want this )

Then go to your Add Remove Programs (WIN XP) or Programs and Features (Vista / Win 7) in the Control Panel and uninstall all previous versions.

You can verify the installation Here (http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml)

Here is some info on disabling it, give it a try and if you encounter problems you can always reenable it

http://www.alanwood.net/demos/enabling-javascript.html

Chrome
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/BYOQskiuGU0

All browsers have the function to turn it on or off

I will keep this thread open for you for a few days, post back and let me know how your doing and if any problems come back we can dig deeper

Ken :)

hi, sounds great i'll go over the java business and let you know how things are looking probably wouldn't hurt to do one more OTL scan and post it before we wrap up, give the family a chance to try and keep things clean then test them with a scan. again thank you for the help, i have been trying to get my daughter to dejunk her computer but she is resisting the idea that she might(does have)issues there. i have seen her browser running 3 ask tool bars at one time and has no malware scanner at all. it will surely be a mess to clean up but first i have to get her to start.

When you can wrestle your daughters computer away from her go ahead and start a new thread, you can name it Daughters Computer, you can run DDS and aswMBR on her system and post the logs and we can go from there

Download DDS from one of the links below to your desktop

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr)
Link 2 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.com)

Double click the tool to run it.
A black Screen will open, just read the contents and do nothing.
When the tool finishes, it will open 2 reports, DDS.txt and attach.txt
Copy/Paste the contents of 'DDS.txt' into your post.
'attach.txt' should be zipped using Windows native zip utility and attached to your post. Compress and uncompress files (zip files) (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Compress-and-uncompress-files-zip-files)

http://i.imgur.com/1QYkxTZ.jpg Please download aswMBR (http://public.avast.com/~gmerek/aswMBR.exe) to your desktop.

Double click the aswMBR icon to run it.
Click the Scan button to start scan.
If you are asked to update the Avast Virus database please allow it to do so.
When it finishes, press the save log button, save the logfile to your desktop and post its contents in your next reply.

I just want to see the report....Please Do Not Fix Anything

Thats nice to hear, thanks for getting back to me and letting me know :)

Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool again.

Click on the Uninstall button.
Click Yes when asked are you sure you want to uninstall.
Both AdwCleaner.exe, its folder and all logs will be removed.

Open OTL and click on Clean Up and it will remove programs we used to clean your system along with there backups, any programs that where not removed you can just drag to the trash.

Malwarebytes is the free version and yours to keep and will not be removed

How did I get infected in the first place ?
