I'm running Spybot - Search & Destroy 2.3.39.0 and there are two settings which are habitually lost when I re-start my local machine. Settings > System Services > ScannerService is off in spite of "Active after every reboot" being checked; and Settings > Internet Protection > "Use Spybot proxy" is unchecked in spite of my repeatedly checking it.

Your advice on how I can avoid this tedious loss of settings will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

The Spybot scanner service needs to run for the Spybot proxy to work,so that might be why you're having trouble with the two settings. :)

Anything I did with the scanner service happened immediately without using Apply and Ok,but when I checkmarked the Spybot proxy, that did need me to click Apply and OK to show under proxy settings.Soooo.......
Maybe try this.Reboot,go back into Spybot settings,System Services tab, start the Spybot scanner service, then click the Internet Protection tab, checkmark Use Spybot proxy, then click Apply and Ok,then reboot, and see if the service and proxy are off again.

And while you're here, can you let me know what operating system you're using? That will make it easy to tell you how to get into Services.msc if Spybot scanner service doesn't stay running after you reboot. :)

Zenobia, I did as you advised and upon the second re-start both the Scanner and the Spybot proxy were running. Yay! The only difference in procedure: After the first re-start I didn't click "Apply" right after turning on the Scanner, but I did click "Apply" (then "OK") after ticking the "Use Spybot proxy" box. We shall see if this welcome change continues!

You're welcome. :)

Wish me and my "old" local machine luck.
Eh,some of those older machines are pretty sophisticated.I have one here that keeps insisting that the date is February 13,1970.I think it must be planning on some sort of time-travel excursion, but nothing has happened so far.

Flyvapnet
2014-06-26, 00:11
Well, Zenobia, here's the only newsworthy item I can find for 13 February 1970: A man-eating tiger was reported to have killed 48 people, 80 kilometers from New Delhi. (Just like my birthday anniversary in June of this year, that date in 1970 fell on a Friday.) Hmm....

Zenobia
2014-06-26, 01:36
Aha!That explains the shrill beeeeeeep when I turn it on and the disturbing thunderous sounds in the tower........it's been practicing sounding scary so it can go back to scare off that tiger and save those people.

Should your old computing machine succeed in reaching back to 1970, Zenobia, here is an example of what it might find in the way of electronic brethren (and humans too)....

By the way, Spybot is back to loosing its settings again.

Well,Fred will be hailed as cutting edge technology.
Yes,I actually named my computer.I decided on Fred, for Fred Flintstone, because he's practically prehistoric.

Please go to Start, then Run,type in Services.msc, and press Ok.
Once services opens, scroll down to Spybot S & D 2 Scanner Service, double click it,then make sure the Startup type is set to Automatic, then click Apply and OK.

Would you have any security software installed that might prevent changes happening to your computer?

Flyvapnet
2014-06-27, 19:57
I did as you advised, Zenobia; and that setting was already set to "Automatic" so I clicked "OK" (since "Apply" was not enabled). The only security software installed, other than Spybot - Search & Destroy, is SpywareBlaster 5.00 and Windows Firewall.

My local machine's name is Asuka, by the way, after Asuka Langley 11608 of Evangelion franchise fame. I think she could help Fred with his time travel!

:kboard:

Zenobia
2014-06-27, 20:09
I think she could, too.Hopefully they don't return with the tiger, though. :lip: hehe!

Speaking of Fred,I'm going to go check......there is one Spybot service that wasn't there when I looked, though I think it is a different one than the file scanner. :)

Zenobia
2014-06-27, 20:24
No,it is the Security Center service not shown in Spybot, the file scanner service is there.
(Fred says rrrrrrrrrrr, click click, with mild thunder sounds, must be in a good mood today.) :D:

Please go back into services, click on Spybot S & D 2 Scanner Service,if it isn't running, then click Start over to the right, let me know if you get any errors.

I appreciate your help, Zenobia! I'll be down the hall in the waiting room. *leafs through old magazines*

:coffee:

Addendum: I didn't see your last post, Zenobia! (Sorry.) Well, everything's running now; so I'll wait until the next re-start and then check the "Services.msc" thing again. Asuka is laughing at me, the little brat! Does Fred ever show you disrespect?

Zenobia
2014-06-27, 22:21
Oh,yes. From the random times when the keyboard suddenly doesn't work when booting up for no known earthly reason,to taking almost 5 minutes to open a browser, then opening 10 pages all at once,Fred has been rudely pulling passive aggressive shenanigans right from the start, lol!

If you don't get any errors when starting the Spybot file scanner on next reboot, you could also look in the Event Viewer:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427
Try looking under System log.Are there any event logs there with a red x that say Service Control Manager?

Zenobia, Asuka and I are hoping you and Fred can help us! I did the Start> Run > Services.msc thing right after the computer last loaded. "Spybot-S&D 2 Scanner Service" was "Stopped" so I clicked on "Start" and it started.

Then, I decided to look at "Spybot-S&D 2 Security Center Service" and it too was "Stopped"; but when I clicked on "Start" it began to start (a dialog box with a progress bar appeared) then abruptly halted and showed this error message:

Could not start the Spybot-S&D Security Center Service service on Local Computer.
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Repeated clicks on "Start" produced the same error message. I tried it again just a few minutes ago, but it still won't start (same error message as before). What's odd is that the "Settings" menu, that big box with all the tabs, thinks everything's up and running; and so does the pop-up box which is activated by mousing over the Spybot logo in the bar at the bottom of the screen. (I can never remember what that bar is called.)

Something's obviously amiss. Spybot thinks everything's running but Windows begs to differ! Now, here's (nearly) four days of red-X log entries containing "Service Control Manager" from Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > System Tools > Event Viewer > System:

Are you familiar with editing the registry? :)
This is the Event ID 7009 page,it does mention editing the registry to increase the time before you get a timeout error, which might help:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc756342%28v=ws.10%29.aspx

Please don't follow that page just yet, because you'd want to back up the registry first, before doing anything, just let me know if you're comfortable with registry editing.

The security center service doesn't show in Spybot's settings on my XP,it only shows in Services, and isn't set to run.Is the Spybot security center service visible in Akira's Spybot settings?

Yes, Zenobia, I'm comfortable with editing the registry. No, the Security Center Service doesn't appear in Asuka's Spybot "Settings" window; and I'm wondering why it doesn't.

Anyway, I'm prepared to edit the Registry and await your further advice on that matter. Asuka 11622 and I appreciate your help, believe me!

My Security Center Service doesn't show in Fred's Spybot settings, either, and another member of the forum said their's didn't show either.I'm not sure why.
So I booted up Fred, and had a look in Services.msc, and my Security Center Service is set to Automatic, and starting it gives me the same time-out error. After you change the timeout time in the registry, that may give the security center service time to start. :)

Ok,please refer to this page and follow the directions so you can make a complete registry backup:
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windowsxp/ht/backupxpreg.htm

After you've backed up the registry, you'll need to see if ServicesPipeTimeout is present.
In regedit,navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
In the pane over to the right, look and see if ServicesPipeTimeout is located there. Then follow either a or b below, whichever is applicable.

a.If ServicesPipeTimeout is located in the pane to the right, then you just need to edit it.
Right-click ServicesPipeTimeout, and then click Modify.
Click Decimal,type 120000,then click OK.
Exit the registry, then reboot your computer.

Or:
b.If the ServicesPipeTimeout is not located in the pane over to the right, then you'll need to create and modify it.
On the Edit menu, point to New,and then click DWORD Value.
Type ServicesPipeTimeout,and then press ENTER.
Right-click ServicesPipeTimeout,and then click Modify.
Click Decimal, type 120000,and then click OK.
Exit the registry, then reboot your computer.

This should give your services a bit more time to start, before the time-out happens. After you reboot, after everything has started, wait for a minute or so,then please look in Spybot settings to see if the file scanner started.
Then go to start, run, services.msc, and let me know if the Spybot Security Center service started as well. :)

As an aside,Fred is apparently feeling quite useful at the moment and has set aside all time travel excursions, because he actually has the correct date, and his clock is only 2 minutes out. That's the first time that has ever been even remotely close to correct.

Thanks a bunch, Zenobia, for your crystal-clear instructions! I backed up the registry, for the first time ever. I bookmarked your latest message and that About.com page you linked. It turned out "ServicesPipeTimeout" was not located at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Control, so I created the entry via your instructions.

:flowers:

After the "Restart", the "Scanner Service" was indeed running (according to Spybot's "Settings"); but when I went to "Services" I discovered "Spybot-S&D 2 Security Center Service" was not running. I clicked on "Start" in its "Properties" box; and it tried to start (dialog box with progress bar appeared) but was immediately overridden by a dialog box which asserted that same old Error 1053 (no timely response). It's as if it's being locked out by some aspect of the Spybot software.

Good news: After the above-mentioned "Restart" and after all the start-up items were safely aboard, I moused over the Spybot icon in that bar at the bottom of the screen (What's its name?) and the little pop-up box indicated everything was running! That hasn't happened in ... a long time, so Asuka 11625 and I are happy. (No mention of the "Security Center Service" is made in the little pop-up box, even as that function is mysteriously absent from Spybot's "Settings".)

:greeting:

So, what to do about the recalcitrant "Security Center Service"? Asuka has gone outside to nap 11626 (she likes sleeping in the elements) but told me to pass on her greetings to both you and Fred.

Me and Fred say hello back(actually Fred said Hello, pleaseremindZenobiashepromisedtoinstallthenewerharddriveandinstallpuppylinuxforme, then went on sputtering a bunch of things about 1's and 0's,he's a strange one, that Fred.) :D: :D: :D:

The bar going the whole way across the screen is the taskbar, and then the area by the clock is the notification area.Though I keep wanting to call it the whatchamacallit bar. :)

When I first noticed the Security Center Service didn't show in Fred's Spybot settings,I assumed that was by design. But then when I noticed that it was set to Automatic in Services.msc,I guess perhaps it isn't by design, maybe the Security Center Service doesn't start quickly enough to run on most XP's,or something like that.

The Spybot-S&D 2 Security Center Service integrates Spybot into the Windows Security Center. That means that Windows Security Center would alert you if Spybot were out of date,or turned off.If you were okay with doing so,those two elements of Spybot could be monitored by you,if you choose to.If you mouse-over the sdtray icon, this tells you if Spybot is out of date, and also if Live Protection is on,off or partial.
If you wouldn't mind going without the Spybot-S&D 2 Security Center Service, then you could set that service to manual.Go to Start,Run,type services.msc, scroll down to Spybot-S&D 2 Security Center Service, doubleclick it,set the start up type to manual, then click Apply and Ok.

If you would prefer to have the Spybot-S&D 2 Security Center Service running, since I'm unsure as to why it doesn't show in Spybot's settings on Windows XP,and whether that is intentional or a bug,you could ask Spybot support about it.There are forms to contact them here. :)

Zenobia, you and Fred have been an immense help to Asuka and me; and for that, we thank you! 11638 I believe we can safely say, as Sergeant Preston of the Yukon 11639 used to do at end of each episode of his television series back in the 1950s, "This case is closed!"

:2thumb:

Regarding the heretofore mysterious "Spybot-S&D 2 Security Center Service" which seemingly wasn't functioning, I went to Start > Settings > Windows Firewall > Exceptions > Add a Program > My Computer > Asuka (C : ) > Program Files > Spybot - Search & Destroy 2 > "SDWSCSvc.exe" and added that file as a firewall exception. Then I opened the Spybot Settings window and under the System Integration tab I beheld "Windows Explorer integration (32 bit) - Plugin responsible for showing you options to scan files and more when right-clicking"! Yay! It's there!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Windows Explorer integration (32 bit) is something different from the security center service.
Security Center Service is under the Services tab.I'll attach a screenshot of it so you can see it(it's from my Windows 7,not Fred). :)

Oh, well. We give up, Zenobia. *is discouraged* 11641 I've paid for goods which weren't delivered. Nostalgia for the old days of Spybot—prior to its software being mysteriously and unnecessarily redesigned, when everything worked; when there was a list of all the cookies, a Tea Timer, etc.—is presently the theme at our humble abode.

:surrender:

Zenobia

I was typing and lost power yesterday, but I see everything I typed was autosaved. That's convenient. :)

I looked on this computer(Windows 7),and I have the ServicesPipeTimeout set to 180000.180000 milliseconds would equal approximately 3 minutes for the service to start,if you wanted to try that. The 120000 was 2 minutes,so you'd be giving the Service a minute more to Start.Probably might not make a difference, though.

If you wanted to try that, you've already got the registry backup,so you should be good there.
You'd go to Start,Run,type regedit.exe,then press OK.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Right-click ServicesPipeTimeout, and then click Modify.
Click Decimal,type 180000,then click OK.
Exit the registry, then reboot your computer.

Though I'm not certain if the Security Center not being on in XP is a bug,or on purpose, since it doesn't show in Spybot's settings,or on at least 3 XP computers,so far.

Zenobia, I reset that "Services Pipe Timeout" function to 180000 as you suggested; but you're right: It didn't seem to help, insofar as there's still no sign of "Security Center Service" in the Settings. I ran the "services.msc" command and tried starting "Spybot-S&D 2 Security Center Service" again; however, just as before, it tried to start but an error-message box touting "Error 1053" appeared. Oh, well.

:bomb:

So I sent a message to "Software support for Home and Professional Edition users" on this Web site, briefly describing the problem. At least I think I did: After entering that stupid and largely-unreadable "CAPTCHA" thing and clicking "Submit" I was taken to the generic page named above, but it didn't display the message form. No confirmation page appeared. Does that mean my message was received or rejected?

:grandpa:

At this point, I imagine there's nothing else we can do. I'll just wait and see what, if anything, is forthcoming from that more formal source of help. In the event Asuka, =^..^= Blue and I thank you for your effort and time. It's been a pleasure meeting you!

You're welcome, and Fred says it was nice for him to feel useful, and not to have to go off on time travel endeavors for something to do. :D:

Bye,good luck with support, hope it gets sorted. :)
