Greetings,
first time poster, although my wife is on this site often. I am impressed by all that Spybot offers, it took me a while to realize this.

A problem I've encountered is when I try to search for updates and download I receive a message box that states "socket error". What does this mean and what can I do to get past this. I have an older machine; HP, 500 mhz(?) processor, Windows 98, 2nd ed.

While this second question may be another topic all together, here goes. Spybot shows that I have pest patrol on my computer. I do not, although I did download it with Zone Labs pro a couple of years ago, before I realized it wasn't a full version. Just "Pest patrol has encountered a gazillion spyware hits and if you want to do something about this send money to get the full version." I did delete this and I can't find anymore files, but it must be there because Spybot picks up on it.

Other than that, great site and program, thanks for your help,

Ric

I havn't been abl to get Spy Bot to run yet at all - I tells me : you need to install the detection updates first by using the integrated update or the manual updater.........

without my internet dialed-up {Duh, i know but I am just trying to illustrate my 2 different responses..}, When I try to "search for updates." I get .........Error retrieving update info file! Socket Error # 11004

if I am online......When I try to "search for updates." .............Error retrieving update info file! Socket Error # 10061 Connection refused.

I tried doing a manual update from http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/ ?
but I can't see any results.....................................HELP !

Hello,

Please take a look at the security settings of your firewall (if you are using one) and make sure that Spybot-S&D is not blocked. That should help to get into the updates. If Spybot-S&D is not blocked it is also possible that our server is temporarily not available. Please try again a few hours later.

If this does not help please download the updates manually:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Here is the direct download link:
http://www.spybotupdates.com/updates/files/spybotsd_includes.exe
Just download and run that file - it is self-installing.

Best regards
Sandra
