VirusBurst - Critical System Error Popup

I have manged to infect my PC with the Critical System Error popup related to PCODC 6.0 with the taskbar having an icon which is a blue questionmark changing to a red circle with a slash.

I ran SPYBOT earlier today and eliminated a zlob virus.
Also by reading the blogs, I went thru my registry earlier today looking for registry enties defined by symantec's library for VirusBurst, but only the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\ (CCFB2B33-F4DB-B63D-ABDC-C7384ED93B34) was present, which I deleted.

Then following tashi's guidelines for this infection, I ran the Panda Online scan with this report:

[B]Then in SAFE Mode ran SPYBot, which declared me clean, then ran Ad-Aware with no detected problems, I ran those earlier today a few times and cleared out all critical & non-critical items

I see you have SmitfraudFix, if it's a new download version v2.84 then run it as in these instructions ... if it's an older version delete it and download a new version...

Download: SmitfraudFix.zip from :-

http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip (the file contains both English and French versions)

1. Download to your desktop
2. unzip the zip file to your desktop (they will be extracted to a folder called SmitfraudFix
3. Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
4. Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files
5. find the C:\rapport.txt file and post the contents in your next post here...

Below is the SmitFraudFix v2.85 rapport file, my previous version was 2.63. Looks like I should go into SAFE mode and delete the Online Security Guide urls. Also looks like gtpbx.dll should either be deleted or replaced with a clean one and delete the four registry fies with (CLSID 7fa55359-7223- ....). I will await your reply.

P.S. looks like I cleaned out by Browser home page hijacker, but the popup VirusBurst warning is still present.

1. Reboot into >>>safe mode (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406)
2. Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
3. Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infected files
4. You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection
5. The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file
6. A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt ... Post the contents of the C:\rapport.txt file in your next post here... + a new hijackthis log.

process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Cleared java Cache, downloaded latest Java program version, ran PandaScan, report is good, it reports the presence of the SmitFraudFix process.exe zip file.

The taskbar flashing question mark is gone.

I know how I was infected by this, I downloaded after a warning. My real question is not how to keep from being infected again, but how I adjust Windows Defender to allow legitimate exchange of data from selected websites. For example, My town has a database for property & tax values, but my search for my residence information is being blocked, but does not provide a warning or tell me how to allow communications to be permittted from this website.

I kind of expect a warning to popup and give me the choice of whether I want to block the action, cookie, etc. Usually I get the choice for most cookies, but not for other options. Where should I go to get a better understanding of Windows defender Options, besides micrsoft.com's limnited value knowledgebase site.

Several scanners report removal tools in this way, because they have no way of knowing if it is good or bad, they are simply drawing your attention to it... don't worry, it Is perfectly safe... but it has done it's job and is now an "unwanted tool" ... you can delete the SmitfraudFix.zip & SmitfraudFix folder from your desktop.

How do you know the information you require is being blocked by Windows Defender ?
