View Full Version : Very sick computer....
Lately my computer has slowed down. I have numerous pop-ups and crashes. I have run spybot, adaware, ZA, ewido and house call. These scanners have removed some malware but it always comes back. In addition, house call could not remove a number of entries and spybot gives me the command service line everytime I run it and fails to remove it. Windows has also become very unstable, locking up for no apparent reason. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I could not save a house call log but it listed the following infections:
adware_commanddesktop
adware_bookedspace
adware_memwatcher

Welcome to the forum, please review this information: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
You have not posted a complete HJT log. If you still need help, do this:
1) Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm
2) Update ewido and run a complete system scan removing anything it locates unless you know it is not bad. Use these instructions for running ewido:
First download ewido anti-spyware from HERE (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"
Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the ewido report scan.
3) Post the ewido scan results and a complete HJT log. I will respond as soon as possible after that.
Thanks
Sorry for the confusion. Ewido picked up no infections.

You need to slow down and read the directions, this is your computer you are fooling with!
1) Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htmWhen I post instructions, I need for you to follow them if you wish my help.
Not much showing in this log, let's clean what I see:
1) Do this before you proceed: Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm
We may well be dealing with a hidden Vundo infection, while you are moving HJT.exe, rename it to say MyHJT.exe or something like that. If Vundo is hidden it will show in the next log.
2)
Sorry for the confusion. Ewido picked up no infections
When I request that you post the ewido scan results, please post the results, I wish to see them with my eyes.
3) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.
4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sys029518946118] C:\WINDOWS\sys029518946118.exe
O18 - Filter: text/html - (no CLSID) - (no file)
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
6) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:
C:\WINDOWS\sys029518946118.exe <<< delete that file
7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Restart the computer and post a new HJT log.
Your Java program is out of date, and if you have Vundo, that is probably where it came from, see this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_03\ <<< out of date
Thank you
Again, my apologies for not paying attention to the details of the directions. I think this time I did everything as you said. I appreciate your patience.
I could not remove the old Java to install the new one. When I attempt to click on Add/Remove Programs, the computer stalls on Attempting to populate list. In addition, when I attempt to scan my D: (a second hard drive I use for storage of work files, it tells me that the drive isn't formatted and will not read it.

Thanks for that infomation, it sounds like you have problems other than malware, have you considered reinstalling windows?
I could not remove the old Java to install the new one. When I attempt to click on Add/Remove Programs, the computer stalls on Attempting to populate list. In addition, when I attempt to scan my D: (a second hard drive I use for storage of work files, it tells me that the drive isn't formatted and will not read it.
When you run ewido you need to delete the junk cookies when found and anything else you know is not bad. You seem to have chosen to take no action. ewido does nothing for you then. You can delete those cookies manually.
This item is still in the log? O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sys029518946118] C:\WINDOWS\sys029518946118.exe Were you not able to remove it? Please let me know what happens when you try. I can not see what is happening and depend on your feedback.
It is important that we update the Java program, try these instructions:
Updating Java and Clearing Cache
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
Downloaded Applets
Downloaded Applications
Other Files
Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
Sometimes it takes a while for Add/Remove programs to populate, be patient. We must get this done, it is a severe security problem.
If you find you can not get it done, then see if you can manually download the newest version. We will continue to work on the issue of Add Remove.
________________________________________________________
I would still like to run the tool for Vundo to be sure, follow the directions carefully.
Thanks to Atribune or any others who helped with this fix.
Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.
If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com
____________________________________________________________
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sys029518946118] C:\WINDOWS\sys029518946118.exe
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
Do not reboot, navigate straight to this file and delete it:
C:\WINDOWS\sys029518946118.exe <<< delete
Post the results of the VundoFix, a new HJT log, any information I asked for and any comments you think will help. I also need to know about any problems still occuring and any error messages you are receiving "word for word"
Thanks
My original plan was to reinstall windows. As all these problems happened suddenly while I was online however, I thought maybe there would be a way to fix things without having to reinstall. With some of the problems listed below, it seems that I might not be able to do that.
In addition to the D: not reading, I also get a noticable graphics resolution change from when my desktop first appears to when windows fully loads. The change is not extreme (just a slight blurring of my desktop) but it is noticable. My desktop icons also appear with blue background behind the caption text. They did not do this before.
Just to reiterate. I was browsing the web and suddenly got a number of popups (probably between 8-10). As I was closing these, the computer locked up (all windows left the shadows behind as I moved them/closed them). I rebooted the computer and encountered the situation that I have now (slow speed, the graphics difference, etc). I then followed the steps as listed here... (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/You_Must_Read_This_Before_Posting_A_Hijackthis_Log-t2852.html)
...in an attempt to fix my problem. When these instructions did not help, I started this thread.
Im not sure if any of this is pertinent but thought I would add it in the event that it is.
I was able to install the new Java but unable to remove the old one. When I attempted to open Add/Remove Programs, the hard drive spins intermittently (about once every second). I let it do this for about 10 minutes before following the directions you gave above. I was only able to install manually. When I updated using the first set of directions, I was able to download to the point where it gave me the 'new updates are ready to install. Click here to install them' popup from the Java icon on the lower right of the screen. When I clicked the icon, nothing happened.

Thanks for the feedback, I will make some suggestions and see what happens. First, I need a complete HJT log to view, you posted the bottom half.
Sounds like malware may have changed the Desktop settings, try these:
Right-click on the desktop
Click on the Properties item
When the Properties dialog comes up click on the Web tab
If Show Web content on my Active Desktop is checked then click on the page in the box below and click the Delete button
Uncheck the checkbox in front of Show Web content on my Active Desktop
Click the Apply button and then the Ok button
_____________________________________
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Display, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop.
Select Restore Defaults
Let me know if this helps
_____________________________________
Try this to open Add Remove programs:
Click Start > Run > type in appwiz.cpl and hit enter
Uninstall the old Java program if you get in
_____________________________________
Let's check to see if we are dealing with a corrupt or missing file, you may need your Windows CD for this one:
Click Start>Run, type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things. Always reboot after you run a tool.

I don't like the way the hard drive is acting, I am going to suggest a diagnostic at PCPitStop. You can also post to get help with the diagnostic results, they may spot something.
Diagnostic: http://www.pcpitstop.com/
Results: http://pcpitstop.invisionzone.com/index.php?showforum=6
Let's try that much to see what happens.
Thanks

Your HJT log is clean of malware, I'll give you this information now. I can run additional scans, but I think you would be wasting your time. The symptoms you are experiencing do not sound like malware, up to you.
Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14

http://cybercoyote.org/security/not-admin.shtml
ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam
Thanks
Thank you very much for your help. When I ran sfc /scannow it detected many missing or corrupted files. Unfortunately for me, I moved about 2 months ago and finding my Win CD is going to be a chore. When I locate it however, I believe I can handle the reinstall.
Additionally, I ran the PC Pitstop scan and it instructed me to defrag my drive. When I ran the windows defrag program, it only reduced it to 45% fragmented. Can you recommend another defrag program that can produce better results? Should I refrain from making any more changes to anything until I am able to restore windows completely?
Lastly, I also use Zone Alarm as a virus scanner. I don't think I need to have both that and Ewido (though I believe I can keep the ZA active scanner on whereas you recommend not doing that with Ewido unless I purchase it). Is the ZA manual scanner as good or better than Ewido or would you recommend I keep both programs?
Thank you very much for your assistance with this. You have provided me with help and insights that I could have not gotten anywhere else. Your time and efforts are greatly appreciated.

To answer to your comments and questions. That CD is the second most important item after the computer, when located I would tape it to the side of the computer.
Defrag: I use the Windows XP tool myself, I suggest you try it in Safe Mode. I have no personal experience with others, but here is a link:
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2006-16,GGLG:en&q=free+defrag+tools
ewido is not an antivirus scanner, my suggestion would be (if you have the disk space) to turn the program off unless you run it manually. Updates are free and the scanner will continue to work for the life of the product. A good free scanner.
As far as Zone Alarm goes, they have a good reputation, but I use the free firewall only on one of my computers.

I hope that information helps, safe surfing...tashi:) will close the topic in a few days.
Thanks...pskelley
