I'm new to virsus removal processes. It seems very interesting. I need help to complete the removal of the xorpix trojan virus.

Steps already taken:
1 - SpyBot scan - but cannot remove this particular virus
2 - ewido scanned - but cannot remove this virus.
3 - HiJackThis ran - I don't know what to remove
4 - KillBox downloaded - I don't know what files to select and kill.

Also, a file with the name is unremovable(delete it and it immmedialty reappear) is it artm_new - can't find any artm.dll files anywhere.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

iastin

Thank for your response. According to your PIN information( i just read it), I've already made a major blunder... I already updated my XP to Service pack 2 (without first removing the malware!)

Am I now doomed? Is my only option to reinstall my operating system softwate? If so, will the malware somehow hide and reappear after a clean reinstallation?

I really can't say what the result will be. There is a possibility you may have to remove Service Pack #2? Please continue with the instructions, I will not know what your malware problem is until you post the HJT log.

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information, You do have a mess and I will start by suggesting you stay offline as much as possible until you are clean. This may seem like a lot, just follow the posted order.
Read about this one: O20 - Winlogon Notify: artm_newreg - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\artm_new.dll
http://research.sunbelt-software.com/threatdisplay.aspx?name=Trojan-Proxy.Win32.Xorpix.Fam&threatid=44436 No doubt your system has been compromised, I can hopefully remove the junk, but can not guarantee your security. You have a lot of other junk including PurityScan adware, let's proceed like this:

1) Turn off TeaTimer, it will block the changes we must make:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

2) You have bad junk in System Restore, it is important that you do not use SR until we clean out the junk.

3) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

5) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs and uninstall PuritySCAN By OIN, OIN or OuterInfo or anything that looks like it. While there uninstall anything you know does not belong there. If you are unsure, let me know and I will look. If you do not see any of the Purity Scan/OIN junk, then download and run this uninstaller:
http://www.outerinfo.com/howto.html

6) http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb
How to use the Delete on Reboot tool

Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\artm_new.dll and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button.

7) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Here is my latest HJK report after implementing all instructions.

One thing I immediatly checked for is the infamous 20. artm_new.dll file. This remains and seems indestructable. Also, the path that points to the file is none existent (there is no "Docs" folder - this trojan seems to e creating a false look-a-like path?). Plus even if i do a drive wide search I cannot locate any artm or variant of this file name.

Thanks for returning your information, and yes artm_new.dll is a very tough item to remove.

Also, Should I have ran HJK scans in SafeMode? I ran in Windows.
If I need you to run a program in Safe Mode I will let you know. I do, however, need all information I request, like about this item:
C:\WINDOWS\MCROSO~1\regsvr32.exe Please use the free scans and tell me if this is bad or not.

C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_10\bin\jusched.exe <<< your most recent log still has the badly outdated Java program, undate that now. If you don't have Vundo we sure don't need it.

I am showing this as an antivirus program: C:\Program Files\Softwin\BitDefender8\bdmcon.exe see this >>> http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/bdmcon/
If this is the case, please remove all but one antivirus program.

One thing I immediatly checked for is the infamous 20. artm_new.dll file.
I appreciate that information, but what I need to know is if you used the instructions I posted to delete that file on reboot? What exactly were you told when you tried to do this?
That is the last item we need to remove, I want you to try that again, make sure you are following these instructions exactly:

Run Hijackthis click >"config" then "misc tools" >"delete file on reboot"
and delete the file below, click no to the message to restart (exact spelling counts!!!)
Copy/Paste the entire bolded line below into the File name box then click Open.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\artm_new.dll

If that does not work, then download this free trial program and run it according to the instructions.
http://prevx.com/ Make sure you use the tool in red to the left on the download page.

Keep me informed and supply that information I requested...thanks

Thanks for your reply.

I did not copy and paste the art_new file into any HJK field, i thought it would delete it if i just checked the box next to the item, this is were i may have gone wrong.

I'm at work now, drats!!!!!!!!!! But will try to copy and paste the file path into the proper field "File Name Box" this evening.

And you're right, so far everything else is cleaned off my computer except this one artm_new file (this is a mean little bugger).

I already tried installing the PrevX software - I found that last week; but it will not let me past the startup screen - it locks at safemode and i can go no further.

I'll keep you posted by 5:15 eastern time.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\artm_new.dll

This path as shown doesn't exists on my computer, there is no "Documents" directory so i could never locate the artm_new file.

Where is this artm_new file actually hidding? I tried to findout more using google search but found nothing that answer this question.

Curious

I will also run the online scans you requested regarding the C:\WINDOWS\MCROSO~1\regsvr32.exe file.

Remaining Issues 1:
This file appear only in a xsoft scan. It immedialtly reappear if deleted.

Registry Value Trojan software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\artm_new\dllname:@c:\documents\settings\all users\documents\settings\artm_ew.dll Severe

Issue 2 Resolved:
The online scan of C:\WINDOWS\MCROSO~1\regsvr32.exe returned "Your Clean"

Issue 3: JE
Latest Version Installed

Issue 4: Multiple Virus Detectors
BitDefender disabled

I already tried installing the PrevX software - I found that last week; but it will not let me past the startup screen - it locks at safemode and i can go no further.

Tried KillBox too.

What next?

Let's do this:

1) C:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0\ <<< look in that folder for the quarantine folder and delete the contents.

2) C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT\ << delete the contents of the Norton recycle bin:
http://service1.symantec.com/support/nsw.nsf/ba62122e5d142a6588256d87006b22be/831aa5c6ef0d750685256c370048ad89?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam

3) C:\RECYCLER\ <<< empty the contents of your recycle bin

4) Turn off the spyware programs again so they can't block HJT. This includes the Guard function in ewido.
http://wiki.castlecops.com/Malware_Removal:_Temporarily_Disable_Real_Time_Monitoring_Programs#ewido

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
(if you do not want these restrictions, you may check and remove them)
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O20 - Winlogon Notify: artm_newreg - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\artm_new.dll (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

Once all of the above have been completed, run a last scan with ewido in normal mode, post the scan results and a new HJT log. Let me know how the computer is running.

Thanks

iaustin

HOORAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Kelly!

I'm all clean.

No pesky artml_new appear anwhere. I even did a registry search and presto... all gone.

Thanks for hanging in there. Man!

You actually enjoy this kind of stuff in retirement? (saw your profile)

I'm going to try and stay up to date o the Trojan/Virus stuff.

Question, what are my options if I re-enable My System Restore and the Trojan returns?

Other good spy/virus site books to recommend?

Question, what are my options if I re-enable My System Restore and the Trojan returns? That's why I said to complete all instructions, number 6 (six) gave you a clean restore point. Nothing left in System Restore once you turn it off and reboot.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

No need to post the ewido scan report if it looks ok to you. Great job of sticking in there yourself:bigthumb:

Safe surfing...tashi:) will close the topic in a few days.

Kelly!!!!!!!!

I did a ewido scan this afternoon and found the files shown below:

C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton CleanSweep\Backup\comm5432.BUD/WINDOWS/SWtl/command.exe -> Adware.CommAd : Cleaned with backup (quarantined).
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\artAD9.tmp -> Proxy.Xorpix.al : Error during cleaning.

It doesn't appear in a HJK, spyBot, nor xsoft scan.

Please Advise

First, my name is Phil and my last name is Skelley, that out of the way you need to put on your thinking cap. Did you bother to read the information I provided from experts and act on any of it to increase your security?

1) C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton CleanSweep\Backup\comm5432.BUD/WINDOWS/SWtl/command.exe <<< this item is in the Norton Backup folder, navigate to that folder and delete it.

2) C:\WINDOWS\Temp\artAD9.tmp -> Proxy.Xorpix.al : Error during cleaning. <<< this item is in the C:\Windows\Temp\ folder, navigate to it and delete everything in that folder. If you can't delete everything (there may be a very old file or two that willl stay there) start the computer in Safe Mode and delete that temp stuff there.

3) Update your antivirus protection and run a complete system scan, delete anything it locates.

4) You need to stop downloading this junk, you might want to discuss this with your Symantec/Norton technical support. You may need to reinstall there software if it has been in anyway corrupted by the malware we removed. The technician would be the one to advise you of that. I personally use these three programs, and do not use Windows Defender so I can't say how it works with them:

SpywareBlaster

SpywareGuard:

Haven't downloaded anything other than your recomendations from the web since the Trojan 3-4 weeks. Did you spot anything in the reports that support that assumption?

FYI, I tried BitDefender and it detected and removed the Xorpix.T Trojan.

No other spyware detected this Trojan strand, spybot, ewior, xoft, hjk, etc

Thanks for hanging in there.

Thanks for that feedback, be careful, there are a lot of nasty folks trying to infect others and it is all about the $$$.
