View Full Version : Windows Defender Won't Start After Upgrade To Windows 10 & Spybot Install

Knowing that the Windows 10 install program would remove Spybot S&D 2.4, I went ahead and uninstalled it myself before the upgrade. The Windows 10 Professional upgrade (32-bit) went smoothly and everything worked afterward (including Windows Defender) so I used the Spybot "Post-Win10 Spybot-install" icon which had been placed on the desktop to reinstall the new 2.5 version of the program. After it was installed I began to get notices that I needed to turn on Windows Defender. Well I've tried to do that multiple times but it simply won't turn back on. I've been running Spybot and Microsoft Security Essentials (& its later successor Windows Defender) together with no problem since Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Why now all of the sudden would Spybot shut down Windows Defender when it never has before? I have to believe that I'm not the only guy this has happened to thus far but I could find no other references to this exact problem on the Forum. I feel like the answer has to be a simple one. Thanks & standing by...

Hello Travasaurus,

Issues are being reported regarding Windows 10, MSE and Defender.

For instance: Microsoft Answers: Windows Defender in Windows 10 Won't run

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_defender-protect_start/windows-defender-in-windows-10-wont-run/34a4ace9-1527-4221-884c-8bea706aca90

There have been several reports of the Windows 10 upgrade from Windows 7 with Microsoft Security Essentials installed has left MSE on the machine and disabled Defender. The uninstall procedures for MSE do not appear to work.

Did you upgrade from Windows 7 or 8.1?

Also, which version of Spybot 2.4 do you have installed please, with or without the anti-virus?

No, you're not. See https://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?72511-Does-SpyBot-S-amp-D-affect-W10-s-Windows-Defender

PepiMK says it's not a Spybot problem. I'm not so sure. I have however reported it to Microsoft, so we'll have to hope that they can fix it, since Spybot doesn't seem interested.

I feel like the answer has to be a simple one.

For the moment, uninstall Spybot. Maybe install v1.6.2, which apparently is working according to https://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?72418-Windows-10-won-t-allow-SBS-amp-D-to-work&p=465192&viewfull=1#post465192

Are you asking me to figure out what operating system and Spybot version Travasaurus is using?

I'm not sure that I can do that, though from his/her opening post it appears likely that the upgrade was from Windows 8.1 (so MSE should have already been removed) - see

But really, rather than taking out your frustrations on me, how about working on the problem which has now been reported by 3 users.

Travasaurus started this topic, I responded and hope he will reply. :)

Kind regards.

Edit
In addition there are also reports of issues with Defender after upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10.

For instance: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-security/windows-defender-turned-off-after-windows-10/e75c7487-5ba6-4cfa-a179-5a9bdff43804?auth=1

No frustration. It's a new operating sytem, when people experience an issue fingers point everywhere so any factual information may lead to a solution.

Windows Defender will not work with Spybot, or any other antivirus program I have tested so far, on Windows 10.

It seems that WD is only available on Windows 10 as backup security if no other security is installed.

From Microsoft:
When you install some 3rd party antivirus (AV) programs, they may automatically turn off Windows Defender. In this case you will not be able to turn on Windows Defender again until the 3rd party AV program has been completely uninstalled.

The problem is that spybot witout AV should not considered ad a antivirus like it was with Windows 8.1...

All I want is a scanner that can be scheduled. Seems that 162 is the only one that fits the bill in Windows 10.

So much for that idea. When I try to run it in Windows 10, I get a stream of errors about access violations at address 000000000 <sigh>.

Mea culpa! I installed into a folder that used to have V2 in it and didn't clear the folder first. After I deleted it and reinstalled, it's scanning okay now. Sorry 'bout that :-)

This is an issue with Windows Defender. Windows disables this program if it detects another internet security
program on your PC.

You can avoid this issue with Spybot by following the instructions below.

Please go to:
Start Center > Settings (tick "Advanced User Mode" if you do not see "Settings") > System Integration

Here, uninstall the Windows Explorer Integration feature.

Click "Apply" and "OK", and reboot your PC.

When it restarts, Windows Defender should be running normally.

Had the same issue and got into a loop of reinstall of Spybot. Deleted file directories and maybe I am ok. Does not like Defender at all.

I will try the above next week end.

Thanks for the excellent help.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, followed the above and it doesn't seem to work. Also relaunched Start Center upon reboot to confirm that 32 and 64 bit Windows Explorer Integration was uninstalled, and they were.

Found a fix that worked for me on another thread (https://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?72572-Windows-Defender-disabled-with-Spybot-FIX).

Go to Start Center -> Settings (check "Advanced User Mode" if you don't see Settings and it should appear) -> System Services tab and uncheck "Activate after every reboot" under "Security Center Service" and click stop for "Security Center Service" as well. Then hit "Apply" and "OK" and you're done!

This makes sure that Windows Security Center doesn't recognize Spybot as a security program, so it doesn't stop Windows Defender due to the supposed duplication (at least if you only have the free version without the antivirus options; if you do have those features, it may actually be best to leave Defender disabled).

Have continued to have problems running Spybot with Windows 10 Defender.
After upgrading to Windows 10 two months ago, I was unable to install and run Defender. The solution was to uninstall Spybot and then install Defender. However, after re-installing Spybot, Defender would not start up at boot or reboot.

Poked around and discovered that a Spybot setting has to be changed; otherwise, Defender will not start up or run.
In Spybot Settings, the first selection is for SECURITY CENTER SERVICE and for INTEGRATION INTO WINDOWS SECURITY CENTER. There is a check-box for ACTIVE AFTER EVERY REBOOT. This box must be UNCHECKED for Defender to start up and run!!
As of today, this problem still persists!!

This week, I discovered, that Spybot will inhibit Defender from accurately reporting scan details. After running a full scan, Defender scan details will show LAST SCAN: mm/dd @ hh:mm QUICK SCAN instead of FULL SCAN.
After uninstalling Spybot ... again ... and running a Defender full scan, the scan details accurately shows LAST SCAN: Today @ hh:mm (FULL SCAN).

I have re-installed Spybot and expect that it will inhibit Defender from accurately reporting scan details.

These problems need to be fixed!!

This works. Maybe good to add, you have to change the services settings within Spybot itself, not within windows.
