MYWEB Box@boot - done it all & can't get rid of!

Hi! I have been struggling to remove an error message that was showing up right after starting: PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\1bar\1.bin\MWSBAR.DLL,S Following your advice to someone else, I believe I have gotten rid of it but my computer still continues to take a very long time booting up. Using your instructions to someone else about this same issue I followed your instructions (SpyBot, Panda, Housecall, SafeMode SpyBot, HJT)and it appeared I had found everything and repaired it. This morning I boot up and I have the same error message: C:\PROGRAM~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\MWSBAR.DLL,S

Welcome to the forum, You still have junk in your log that should be removed. This is what I suggest you do.

1) Do you own SpySweeper? It is a good program, but if it is left from a trial, I suggest you uninstall it, you get no benefits for the resources it uses.

2) Open Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs and uninstall anything My Web Search that is there, also uninstall anything you know does not belong there. If you are unsure, let me know and I will look.

3) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(The R1/R0 items are optional and not making the browser run faster. Earthlink will probably put their search junk back but we will try)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\MYWEBSEARCH~1\ <<< delete that folder

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, any information I requested and your comments. How is the computer running now?

Hi!

Thanks for your help! Of course I discovered after posting that My Web wasn't gone at all. Over the weekend I found Spybot instructions to someone else that was having the same problem and followed them exactly as far as step 5. At 5 I only chose the ones I knew I could delete and then completed the steps.

When it wasn't gone I went back and went through the before posting steps and ran Panda Online Scan, Housecall (several times until it no longer found anything), rebooted into safe mode and ran Spybot and then ran HJT.

For some insane reason - and I apologize profusely - I started a new thread at: http://www.forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=7257 that has all the current logs posted with it. I haven't done anything to it since those logs were run.

Susan, I apologize, I am working with a lot of folks at a lot of forums and I did not get notified when you posted. Perhaps merging the two topics caused it. I am going to suggest that one person work with the instruction, switching back and forth can create problems where one does not know what the other has done. Information I asked for and instructions I gave, I received no feedback on, I am posting basically all of the last instructions. Please follow the instructions carefully and give me more that a posted HJT by way of feedback.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Do you own SpySweeper? It is a good program, but if it is left from a trial, I suggest you uninstall it, you get no benefits for the resources it uses.
If you own it say so, if you don't then uninstall it or please tell me why you would want a program giving you no benefits to be using your resources.

4) Open Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs and uninstall anything My Web Search that is there, also uninstall anything you know does not belong there. If you are unsure, let me know and I will look.
If you do not see MyWebSearch or any other programs you know do not belong there, please give me this information so I do not have to look there again. If you do not know, say so and I will look myself.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

(understand this item was in the last log with instructions for removal, it must be removed and it should be here)

C:\PROGRAM FILES ~1\MYWEBS~1\ <<< delete that folder (it may be MYWEBSEARCH but it won't be that hard to identify. If it is not there, then use Search Companion to locate it and delete it.

7) Run ATF Cleaner (no need to clean Prefetch a second time if it was done the first)
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Post a new HJT log and include your comments, especially any information I requested.

I own Spysweeper but I have uninstalled it. I want you to know I didn't blow off your instructions. After my husband did them without success I spent days doing them over and over again. I ran Housecall, Bitdefender, Panda, etc. over and over again. I was ready to give up and just rebuild the system when your email came through and decided to give it one more try.

I did steps 1-5 with no problem. Once I got to step 6 I was unable to find the C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\MYWEBS~1 so I began to search for it. I wasn't finding anything until I did a search for *web* and then after a while a whole bunch of files showed up in a My Space folder complete with icons, etc(compliments of the 11 y.o.) so I deleted the complete folder. That must have been the key because I then ran the ATF cleaner and it didn't find anything and it has been booting up without the MYWEB error message ever since.

Thank you so much for your help! I was beginning to think I was doomed to a rebuild! Many, many thanks!

I can tell I don't have to tell you that you need to control what is downloaded, this was a fairly benign item, some rootkits that can come from the same place can never be successfully guaranteed to be removed. When we hit them, we give the ower the option of reformatting or never being secure on that computer. I am also sure you know of the dangers that exist with MySpace, especially for children the age of yours. Please do not allow the children to see this information:

Watch your Java program, you have it set to update on auto, and I think it needs an update. The updater is buggy and I would check it manually, here information:

is a leftover from SpySweeper, you can use HJT to remove it if you wish.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
