Smitfraud-C with a twist...

I am trying to fix my friend's PC which is infect with Smitfraud. She doesn't get the annoying popups... the only symptoms are a red circle with a white x in the system tray, which doesn't do anything but tell you have have spyware on your computer. No, it doesn't take you anywhere to buy the product or anything.

I have tried running Smitfraudfix, but it just keeps coming back. 2 files I have noticed magically appearing are c:\winstall.exe and in the user\application data\install.dat. It also puts winstall in the startup tab of msconfig.

Spybot S&D says there are no problems. I am running 1.4, and have gotten all the most recent updates.

Now here's the twist... every other solution I have found requires booting into Safe Mode, but I can't!!! When I boot into Safe Mode, I just get a black screen with "Safe Mode" in the four corners and operating system infor across the top. I have a mouse cursor, but no desktop icons, no start button, no taskbar. When I boot up, it tries to display the dialogue box to let you know you are in diagnostic mode, and has a "yes" and "no" button at the bottom, but the dialogue box is only up for a few seconds and then disappears.

My work around has been to boot into safe mode with command prompt, and run SmitfraudFix and Spybot from a DOS command prompt... what fun that was. Anyway, at least I was able to do it, and the !@#$%&* spyware/virus/whatever is still there. I just can't shake this thing. HHEELLPP!

Attached is the spybot report, and the hijackthis report from my friend's computer (yes, it's really a friend's computer, and not mine... thank GOD).

A gold star to whoever can help with this mess. I called Dell about why I can't boot into safe mode, and their answer, of course, reinstall Windows XP. I figured their help would be useless, but I'm desperate.

The "safe mode" problem ended up being cause by a trojan virus called Vundo. I went here and followed the directions to fix it:

Now at least I can boot my friend's computer into safe mode and run the tools I need without a command prompt. But there is still that #$%^&* red circle with the white x in her system tray that completely drags her system to a snail's pace.

I can't let go!!! I won't be able to sleep until I figure this out... with your help of course. :)

Ok now, in Safe Mode, S&D found Smitfraud-C as c:\winstall.exe, has supposedly fixed it (for like the 10th time), and we finished "fixing", we immunized. And I'll be darned, that stupid thing *still* comes back.

Hi, Ginger! I already read your post, and was looking forward to heading back to my friend's house today to try the advice you were given. The only thing is winstall doesn't seem to be in the HJT log, but I may have temporarily gotten rid of it when I ran HJT. I'm going to run HJT again on her computer when I know the virus is active and hit kaspersky.com and see if her ntsystem.exe file is infected.

Thanks for the tip... I'll post my results in a few hours, which I can get some time to run over to my friend's house.

Well, I did what Shelf Life told Ginger to do but to no avail. Interestingly, kaspersky.com did not find an infection on my ntsystem.exe file. But I ran Hijackthis, and told it to fix the 2 lines that Shelf Life told Ginger to fix. Then I deleted the 2 files (winstall.exe and ntsystem.exe). Upon reboot, the dang virus still starts back up, about 5 minutes after I boot up.

Just a question, but when I tell hijackthis to fix something, the screen just goes blank. It doesn't say "problem fixed" or any type of confirmation message. Is this normal?

I ran hijackthis in safe mode, and it found ntsystem, but not the winstall.exe. Tried to fix in safe mode, but it didn't work.

Hiya

I wish I was a bit more of an expert. My machine is fine now. The only other thing I did, was download a trial version of Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0

I did a full system scan and it found loads of stuff which it deleted.

Anything is worth a try at this point. I was hoping one of the forum experts would have suggested something by now (no offense!! :D: ). But that's life. I e-mailed my friend the link and she's going to install and run it and see what we find. Thanks for the tip.

Well, no one on the site could help me, but I did get help from another source. They told me to have Hijackthis fix the following entries:

O2 - BHO: ATLDistrib Object - {93C6313C-9DB4-4694-8BD0-E378C573A9AD} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnli.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gwiz] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntsystem.exe
