View Full Version : Possible Browser Hijack + Pipas.A

Josh24601
2006-09-13, 12:59
Hi,

I think my browser may have been hijacked as I was sometimes directed to a different website from my intended one.

Then I downloaded and installed Spybot, ran it, and removed a number of detected items such as:

KillAndClean, Pipas.A and a few others that I can't remember.

I then realised after running Spybot again that Pipas.A was still being detected, looked up this forum for help, and read the following link, http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288

Then I went to Bitdefender to do an online virus scan and left it overnight, but when I woke up found that my computer had crashed, so I have no way of finding out if the scan completed, and what files were being deleted.

Anyway, I scanned it again with Bitdefender, and followed the rest of the instructions from the above link.
(sorry for the longwinded post)

Below are the contents of the report from the online scan:

We will remind you to turn it on later

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.

Hi LonnyRJones,

Thanks for the reply.

I have done the steps as you ask.

This is a laptop I've not used for a number of years, and I've only just taken it out to be used again early this year. I guess I just never got around to installing a virus scanner; also, download traffic is expensive for where I am now, and at the moment I can't afford any commercial anti-virus software.

I understand however, that there are free anti virus software out on the web, such as AVG(?) Grisoft, and AVAST. Which one of these two do you recommend, or do you recommend some other alternatives?

By the way, here are the files:

AVG is good, Once installed and updated do a full system scan.

Close all browsers, Start Hijackthis and place a check next to these items If there.

Looks fine except you never installed IE SP1

Do Update as soon as possible.

Think Prevention: Put in place a good hosts file

How To Download and Extract the HOSTS file:

Repeat that proccess about once or twice a month
