I have been getting popups no matter what I do with about:blank as the first window to pop up, then another one saying something like "search portal information," briefly, then a window with a game I need to play to win something. At other times I get a window telling me I have won something instead of a game popping up. I have had no home page hijacking because when I first came about this popup through a hit on an AOL search for a site that said "search portal information," a window popped up actually asking me whether I wanted to change my home page so I clicked "no" and signed off AOL. Since then, I have had this popup. I have installed spywareblaster with Active X controls, so the window pops up, but the annoying game does not display. I hit "control, alt, delete," and the window disappears. Is there major damage being done here? I ran either Spybot or Ad-aware that indicated that I had been subject to a hijacking attempt and that it would be quarantined. My concern is what is going on with this computer. Am I safe from identity theft? What is this adware?

Me again, posting a reply to my own post. Actually, I wanted to add something new to my original post. I am new to this site but I saw everyone else was going to Hijackthis, running a scan, and copying the logfile of the scan and posting it for the the experts, so I went to Hijack this and here is my logfile s of 9/14/06:

Welcome
No problems with internet explorer just aols or other browser's correct ?

Your running Hijackthis from a temp and/Or it still hasnt been unzipped, neither is a good idea.
Create a new folder, for instance C:\AntiSpyware
Download the exe from here to that new folder.
http://www.merijn.org/files/HijackThis.exe
This is necessary to ensure you have backups should anything go wrong
Make and post a new log

Also: list the contents of this folder c:\windows\options\systools

I am getting persistent popups, probably from about:blank adware, beause that is what the popup window indicates when it first appears. I have installed spywareblaster, with Active X controls, so I cannot even view the contents of the popup window, which is a blessing, but the popups keep on coming. My question is: is this malware that is stealing my information for identity theft purposes even if I do not fall for their scam? Their scam consists of asking me to play a game, and if I don't go for that, the next time, it tells me I've won an expensive prize, like a computer, and I suppose, the next step is to ask me personal info, so I can claim it. OM pther words, what is it doing to my privacy and to my computer even if I do not interact with it and feed it information?

I would like to remove it, so the logfile is below. Thanks very much in advance for your assistance.

Hi

What browser are you using when the popups occur ?
Id like a description of them, open spywareblaster and undue (temporaraly) its protections.

What other antispyware programs do you have ?
